No. 6 Villanova beats Butler 67-55 to go 13-0

There have been Final Four teams and a national championship team and multiple Big East title winners for Villanova since its first recognized game in 1920.

Only one other edition has ever been perfect through 13 games.

Up next for coach Jay Wright's crew, a chance to be alone in the record book.

Ryan Arcidiacono scored 15 points and JayVaughn Pinkston had 13 to help No. 6 Villanova beat Butler 67-55 on Wednesday and match the best start in program history.

Sterling Gibbs' 25-point night sparks Seton Hall

Sterling Gibbs knows there's a long way to go, and that's why the Seton Hall guard didn't want to get too excited after his near-flawless performance against No. 15 St. John's.

Gibbs had 25 points, eight assists and no turnovers to lead the Pirates past the Red Storm 78-67 in the Big East opener for both teams Wednesday.

Jalen Reynolds helps Xavier upset No. 25 Georgetown

When Jalen Reynolds avoids foul trouble and stays on the court, Xavier likes its chances.

Reynolds matched a career high with 17 points, and the Musketeers beat No. 25 Georgetown 70-53 on Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both schools.

    Rysheed Jordan takes personal leave

St. John's sophomore guard Rysheed Jordan will be taking an indefinite leave of absence due to what the school called "personal and family matters."

Jordan is second on the team in scoring at 14 points per game.

"Rysheed will take an indefinite leave of absence from our basketball program and will not be with the team as he focuses his attention on personal and family circumstances," Lavin said in a statement released Friday night.

Seton Hall is back with the best in the Big East Conference.

Freshman Khadeen Carrington hit a go-ahead, spinning layup with 1:38 to play in overtime and Seton Hall knocked off its second ranked foe this week, defeating No. 6 Villanova 66-61 on Saturday.

For decades, dating to when current coach John Thompson III's father roamed the sideline, Georgetown freshmen have not been allowed to speak to the media early in the basketball season.

Now that it's January, that restriction is lifted, and with the way the Hoyas' first-year players performed Saturday, it made sense for at least one of them to appear next to Thompson at a news conference afterward. L.J. Peak, Tre Campbell and Paul White combined for 37 points to lead No. 25 Georgetown past Creighton 76-61 in a Big East matchup.

Darrun Hilliard, Daniel Ochefu and No. 8 Villanova took off in the second half and made sure one loss didn't lead to another.

Hilliard scored 21 points and the Wildcats rebounded nicely from their first defeat of the season, pulling away from No. 24 St. John's for a 90-72 victory Tuesday night.

Josh Hart cocked his arm back like a quarterback and threw a deep pass across the court into the waiting arms of Daniel Ochefu. In one motion, Ochefu caught the ball and redirected it to Ryan Arcidiacono, who made a buzzer-beating jumper and celebrated all the way to the locker room.

It was a fitting end to a dominant first half for No. 8 Villanova, who slowed DePaul's quick Big East start with an 81-64 rout Saturday.

His team down two points, Sterling Gibbs went into the huddle for Seton Hall's final timeout and told coach Kevin Willard he wanted a play drawn up for him to shoot a 3-pointer.

Willard was happy to oblige and even happier after Gibbs made that 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left, lifting No. 19 Seton Hall over Creighton 68-67 on Saturday.

If winning on the road is a sign of a good team, Butler is getting there.

Roosevelt Jones scored a season-high 23 points, Kellen Dunham added 21 and Butler knocked off No. 21 Seton Hall 79-75 in overtime on Tuesday night.

    - Villanova coach Jay Wright never got particularly worried when his team struggled from 3-point range earlier in the season. He knew his players just weren't finding good looks.

It's fair to say they're finding them now.

Ryan Arcidiacono had 18 points and six assists, Dylan Ennis finished with 17 points and six rebounds, and No. 5 Villanova made a season-high 15 3-pointers to beat Xavier 88-75 on Wednesday night.

Georgetown beat Villanova -- ranked No. 4 in the country -- to move into first place in the Big East, a victory some students deemed worthy of a court-storming.

Coach John Thompson III felt it was a bit over the top.

"The kids, the fans, the students watch a lot of TV, so they're excited, they storm the court," Thompson said. "Yeah, I probably wish they hadn't done that."

That said, the rush of humanity following Monday night's 78-58 win wasn't close to the endless sea of bobbing heads that has accompanied some of the Hoyas' landmark victories at the Verizon Center. After all, this was a regular-season game against a familiar rival.

DePaul was trailing by eight points on the road to a nationally ranked team with five minutes left and its best player was soon to foul out.

But Blue Demons coach Oliver Purnell gave his team one message down the stretch as they faced No. 24 Seton Hall on Thursday night.

"It's simple: Just believe," Purnell said after his team rallied in the closing minutes for a 64-60 win. "These are the things you have to do. The game was not over. I tried to preach to them that they had done it before, coming back from 13 against Marquette and 10 against St. John's. This was like that. We had experiences like that.

After an embarrassing loss at Georgetown, Villanova's players seethed for nearly a week and couldn't wait to get back on the court.

They took their anger out on Creighton.

Darrun Hilliard scored a season-high 24 points to lead No. 4 Villanova to a 71-50 victory over Creighton on Sunday night.

Myles Davis scored 19 points in his third start of the season, and Xavier held No. 21 Georgetown without a field goal for more than 11 minutes in the first half Tuesday night in a 66-53 victory that completed a sweep of the Hoyas.

Ryan Arcidiacono and No. 7 Villanova took the Big East lead Saturday -- taking advantage of some help from the big snow storm.

Ryan Arcidiacono scored all 18 of his points in the second half to help Villanova beat DePaul 68-55.

Andrew Chrabascz helped the Butler Bulldogs gain the extra time they needed to salvage an improbable road victory.

Chrabascz scored a career-high 30 points and No. 25 Butler overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 4:21 of regulation to beat Marquette 72-68 in overtime over Marquette in a Big East Conference game on Saturday.

"He had a whale of a game," said Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski. "I mean, he was the guy that put Butler on his back. Not that there wasn't other big plays that their kids made, but he was the player of the game."

The Bulldogs opened a 66-61 lead on a layin by Chrabascz with 1:09 left in overtime, but Marquette rallied within 66-65 on baskets by Duane Wilson and Juan Anderson.

Georgetown coach John Thompson III knew his team had shut down Creighton for a long time. He was surprised after the game when he was told just how long.

The Bluejays went more than 17 minutes over the halves without a field goal Saturday, and by the time they finally broke through, the 21st-ranked Hoyas were well on their way to their 67-40 victory.
