    So much for looking ahead.

Paul Jesperson matched his season-high with 13 points and Seth Tuttle added another 13 to keep 18th-ranked Northern Iowa in the hunt for the Missouri Valley Conference title with a 59-52 win over Southern Illinois on Wednesday night.

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall wasn't going to say his players were looking past this game to a Top 25 showdown at Northern Iowa on Saturday.

But even Marshall wondered if that was the case after his 12th-ranked Shockers needed Fred VanVleet's career-high 27 points to hold off short-handed Loyola 58-47 Wednesday night.

Wichita State's long Missouri Valley Conference winning streak is history.

So is the Shockers' stranglehold on first place in the league.

Seth Tuttle scored a career-high 29 points and 18th-ranked Northern Iowa trounced No. 12 Wichita State 70-54 on Saturday, snapping the Shockers' 27-game regular-season winning streak in conference play.

No. 14 Northern Iowa is getting accustomed to this routine. Another road trip, another strong defensive showing and, of course, another win.

While Seth Tuttle had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Jeremy Morgan had 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds Tuesday, it was the Panthers' suffocating defense that shut down Indiana State a 61-51.

Wichita State appeared to be on its way to an easy win Wednesday night before it struggled to score down the stretch.

Fred VanVleet then stepped up at a critical time for the Shockers.

VanVleet made two free throws with 4.6 seconds left, and No. 16 Wichita State held on for a 62-59 win at slumping Bradley.

After letting Drake get within single digits, No. 14 Northern Iowa needed to make a few plays to put away the Bulldogs.

The Panthers answered with three 3s in 103 seconds and cruised to yet another easy win.

Seth Tuttle scored 16 points, Matt Bohannon added 14 and Northern Iowa handled Drake 69-53 on Saturday for its 11th straight victory.

Wichita State guards Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker have had a good chemistry for some time.

So when Baker says he could see something different in VanVleet's eyes Saturday night, it's probably true.

"Fred just had this look in his eye like, `Shoot it,' when he passed it to you," Baker said. "He's setting us up with these perfect passes, this perfect backspin, and you could tell he wanted you to make the shot."

It was part of the reason VanVleet had the Shockers' first triple-double in 43 years as No. 16 Wichita State routed Missouri State 78-35.

Northern Iowa has gone from simply beating teams to blowing them out.

Seth Tuttle scored 23 points and the 13th-ranked Panthers rolled past Illinois State 83-64 on Wednesday night for their 12th straight victory -- and fourth in a row by at least 10 points.

Fred VanVleet looks so nonchalant on the court that nobody could be faulted for giving him a good shake -- you know, just to make sure the talented point guard is still awake.

Then you realize he just put up a triple-double. Or poured in a bunch of points.

Wichita State's floor leader followed up his rare statistical achievement from last weekend with a big scoring outburst Wednesday night, scoring 21 points and leading the No. 15 Shockers to a 74-57 victory over Indiana State.

Four days after a season-high performance from 3-point range, Northern Iowa did it again.

Seth Tuttle scored 22 points and the No. 13 Panthers matched their season-high with 12 3-pointers to beat Missouri State 68-57 on Sunday. They also hit 12 3s against Illinois State on Wednesday.

Struggling to make shots from the field, No. 15 Wichita State had to find another way to win Saturday.

So that's what the Shockers did.

Ron Baker scored 19 points and Wichita State overcame poor shooting with fierce defense in holding off Illinois State for a 68-62 victory.

Northern Iowa quickly dispatched of Evansville, setting up a showdown with 11th-ranked Wichita State for the Missouri Valley title.

Deon Mitchell scored 17 points and the No. 10 Panthers beat Evansville 68-57 on Wednesday night. Paul Jesperson added 11 points for the Panthers (27-2, 16-1 MVC), who are tied with the Shockers atop the conference. The two teams will meet Saturday in Wichita for the regular season championship and the top spot in the league tournament.

With Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker struggling on offense, Darius Carter picked up the offense for Wichita State.

The 6-foot-7 forward posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 11 Shockers to a 63-53 win over Indiana State on Wednesday night. His scoring came on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and during key moments of the game when the Shockers needed a basket.

Southern Illinois' game plan was to prevent Wichita State's stars and inside players from taking over.

That left defensive stopper Tekele Cotton, and a full-court press, a combination that pulled the eighth-ranked Shockers out of an early rut.

"We did not want VanVleet or Baker or the bigs to beat us," Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson said after a 56-45 loss in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament Friday. "We said, `We're going to make Cotton beat us today, and quite frankly that's what it came down to."

When Ben Jacobson arrived at breakfast Friday morning, the first thing he heard was laughter coming from his Northern Iowa players.

The Panthers were loose and comfortable three hours before taking the court, and just as calm later when Wyoming was trying to complete a huge comeback.

Northern Iowa had no interest in being the latest No. 5 seed to be upset by a 12th seed.

Paul Jesperson led five Northern Iowa players in double figures with 16 points, Seth Tuttle added 14 and the Panthers held off Wyoming's comeback for a 71-54 victory in an East Region matchup on Friday.

Wichita State senior Darius Carter had just turned to head up the court when an elbow caught him in the kisser.

The impact pushed one of his front teeth back into his mouth, and he thought he was going to lose it. The tooth was saved, and Carter was out of the game for only a few minutes. When he came back, he dunked.

Yeah, he was playing angry, as is the Shockers' mantra.

"I let out a big scream and I felt a release," he said. "I just wanted to win, that's all."

Carter returned in time for Wichita State's decisive run in an 81-76 victory over Indiana on Friday in the NCAA Tournament, setting up a much-anticipated Sunflower State showdown against second-seeded Kansas.

The boys from Wichita State had been hearing it in text messages from friends, and on social media from total strangers: Don't let the chance to stick it to Kansas slip away.

The Shockers would never dream of it.

Finally getting a chance to play the school that continually spurns them, Fred VanVleet and the rest of the Missouri Valley champs rolled to a 78-65 victory over the second-seeded Jayhawks on Sunday, earning a trip to the Sweet 16 in the sweetest way possible.

No. 10 Wichita State beats Charleston Southern 88-63

Less than 12 minutes into the season, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was beside himself with the play of his 10th-ranked Shockers and launched a stat sheet into the air.

Wichita State might have key veterans, but Friday night's season-opening 88-63 victory over Charleston Southern was a reminder the Shockers will rely on freshmen this season, too.

Tulsa upsets No. 9 Wichita State 77-67

While Tulsa players and coaches refused to get swept up in the moment of the Hurricane's upset win over Wichita State.

Tulsa's students didn't hold back, storming the court after the 77-67 victory over the ninth-ranked team in the country. It was the school's first victory over a ranked team in 24 tries.
