With the game on the line, Malcolm Brogdon and No. 2 Virginia just needed to get one stop.

Brogdon found himself matched up one-on-one with Wake Forest's best crunch time player, Codi Miller-McIntyre, and had to figure the outcome was hanging in the balance. Brogdon won, preventing Miller-McIntyre from driving past him and causing a game-ending turnover Saturday as the Cavaliers held on after blowing almost all of a 13-point second-half lead in a 61-60 victory against the Demon Deacons.

A handful of Pittsburgh students handed North Carolina coach Roy Williams a condolence card covered in signatures and a lengthy banner highlighting one of program icon Dean Smith's most famous quotes on Saturday, a way of expressing sympathy and respect following the Hall of Famer's passing a week ago.

"College athletics is not all bad," Williams said. "There are some darn good things that happen."

And plenty of things did on Saturday, just not on the court. At least, not for North Carolina.

Stunned at the start and sagging at the finish, the 12th-ranked Tar Heels put up little resistance in an 89-76 loss to the Panthers. An emotionally draining week that began with Smith's death and included the murder of a graduate student, his wife and her sister ended with North Carolina's third loss in its last four games.

Cat Barber's surging self-assuredness could be the catalyst that alters the course of North Carolina State's season.

It was, at least, enough to spark Saturday's 74-65 win over No. 9 Louisville, the Wolfpack's second win against a top 10 conference opponent this year.

Trevor Cooney did it to Notre Dame again.

A year ago, Cooney tied a Syracuse record with nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points in beating the Irish. He wasn't as prolific Tuesday but scored nine of his 11 points in the second half, including a pair of baskets 80 seconds apart late in the game that stalled the ninth-ranked Irish as the Orange won 65-60 on Tuesday night.

North Carolina State arrived at North Carolina focused more on getting another road win to help its NCAA tournament chances than trying to end its long drought at the Smith Center.

The Wolfpack ended up taking care of both in impressive fashion.

Anthony Barber scored 15 points, and NC State beat the 15th-ranked Tar Heels 58-46 on Tuesday night, earning its first road win in the series in a dozen years.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is starting to see, and feel, the effects of having a short-handed roster.

Jahlil Okafor scored a career-best 30 points, including four in overtime, and Quinn Cook scored 21 of his 26 in the second half and overtime Wednesday night as No. 4 Duke survived at Virginia Tech 91-86, the Blue Devils' eighth straight victory.

Darion Atkins turned his final home game at Virginia into a display of how far he has come.

The lone scholarship senior on the No. 2 Cavaliers' roster, Atkins had 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots Saturday as Virginia beat Virginia Tech 69-57. He punctuated his afternoon with two dunks in the final 67 seconds, the first drawing him a technical foul for hanging on the rim, and left to wild applause with 40 seconds left.

Justise Winslow swished a big 3-pointer for No. 4 Duke, and turned to find something unusual: coach Mike Krzyzewski reaching to give him a high-five.

"I just didn't want to leave him hanging," Winslow said, smiling.

The freshman scored a season-high 23 points and the Blue Devils routed Syracuse 73-54 on Saturday night for their ninth straight win.

The last of Brice Johnson's five dunks was the most emphatic, and when he landed with his arms outstretched he froze the pose, as if seeking style points.

No. 15 North Carolina showed some flair that had been lacking of late, and took advantage of the 6-foot-9 Johnson's dominating inside game to beat Miami 73-64 on Saturday.

While the focus is often on what a team does in March, Louisville has a habit of closing strong in February.

The Cardinals have won 16 of their last 19 February games, and No. 17 Louisville turned in one of its best offensive and defensive performances this season in an 81-59 win over Florida State on Saturday.

When Virginia coach Tony Bennett glanced up at the Carrier Dome scoreboard as the first half was dwindling, he winced. His second-ranked Cavaliers had made just one field goal in the first 13 minutes and trailed Syracuse by 11 points.

"I just looked at the guys, and I said, 'All we've got is each other. We're going to have to try to figure this out,'" Bennett said. "I've been in those spots before. We couldn't change anything. We're just either going to sink or swim with these guys."

    The Cavaliers decided to swim.

After the shakiest of starts, they settled down and carved up Jim Boeheim's 2/3 zone to reel off a 35-12 spurt spanning halftime. The Cavaliers won going away 59-47 Monday night.

North Carolina needed a boost after failing to win consecutive games in a rough February.

Now, just in time for a rematch with Duke, the Tar Heels are rolling

again.Freshman Joel Barry scored a career-high 15 points and No. 19 North Carolina established some late-season momentum by beating Georgia Tech 81-49 on Tuesday night, completing a sweep of the struggling Yellow Jackets.

Eight days off gave No. 12 Notre Dame plenty of time to address several areas and recharge, and the only concern was whether the Fighting Irish might be rusty against No. 16 Louisville.

The Irish took care of that by erasing a 6-0 deficit with a 10-0 run, setting the tone for a night of strong offensive confidence that paid off big down the stretch in a hostile environment where they've often struggled.

Demetrius Jackson scored 21 points and Notre Dame made its final seven shots to pull away for a 71-59 victory over Louisville Wednesday night to clinch third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Notre Dame was rocked on its heels one more time in March, a team with designs on playing another weekend or two staring straight into the grim prospect of one more early exit.

The Irish held on, though, because they could hold on to the ball.

Zach Auguste scored 25 points, Jerian Grant added 17 and Notre Dame dodged a scare trying to erase its futile NCAA tournament history with a 69-65 win over Northeastern on Thursday.

    - Bryce Alford's final jumper appeared offline when he let it fly from behind the 3-point arc, and all the UCLA guard could do was helplessly watch the battle for the rebound.

SMU center Yanick Moreira was in position and seemed to time his leap as he went up to touch it. The officials, however, thought he was a bit too quick and called goaltending and awarded Alford the winning basket with 13 seconds left -- one that's sure to be this NCAA tournament's most debated.

Alford had no doubt there was interference.

"I had a pretty good look at it because I shot it," Alford said after the 11th-seeded Bruins' 60-59 South Regional victory over sixth-seeded SMU on Thursday. "From my angle, I saw Kevon [Looney] and another player going after it, and I was confused because he went up and grabbed it on its way to the rim.

North Carolina was supposed to be too big, talented and versatile, and at times, the Tar Heels lived up to their pregame billing.

It was just enough to squeak by Harvard, one tough out in the NCAA tournament.

Justin Jackson hit a tying jumper in the final minute and then had a fast-break dunk to help the fourth-seeded Tar Heels edge the Crimson 67-65 on Thursday night.
