Always admired people with the strength, courage and will to climb Everest. Likely the most devastating day in climbing history.

    Prayers with the families.

...how about the hundreds of others that were killed who were not on Everest?

I'm curious how many small high elevation villagers, have faired? Nepal, Mustang, Tibet, Bhutan.......

Dozens of villages, in remote out of reach destinations, other than by foot......

I'd wager there's double the dead, in other (non-climb areas) unknownst to most.........!

...oh, I'm sure the final toll will be in the thousands...I wasn't turning a blind eye to the people who perished on Everest, just pointing out that many many more died elsewhere.

These are the #s in today's paper.....

    Over 1,500 dead.
10 killed & over 30 injured on Mt. Everest.
7.8 on the Richter scale, or about 16 times more powerful than the 2010 quake in Haiti.
Worst quake in Nepal since 1934
    27.8 million residents of Nepal.

Sometimes, many times..lol,.... I feel - if you're going into, or volunteering to venture into dangerous territory just for the thrill of it or to satisfy your ego or brag about it......don't hold your breath waiting for rescue crews who would have to RISK THEIR LIVES and be occupied with trying to save your ass and unable to be utilized for potential others who are victims just going about their everyday business on the streets and towns of our country.

THAT's my opinion, and I'm sticking by it......and only because I know there are some here who have demonstrated an obvious bias towards me and are notorious knee jerkers....I'll also add➡ I don't give a crap about any criticism of my opinion on this matter.

Let's see how "brave" you are when you see a one or more thugs beating the crap out of, and molesting a woman 30 feet away from you.

    That's all - bye bye.

At least 17 killed (climbers & Sherpas included) and 61 injured are the current numbers.

Just keep in mind those folks on Everest aren't poor, having spent $30-120k for their expedition. Then there are the poor Sherpas, numbering almost 1:1 with those "rich egomaniacs". One prominent person identified was an exec with Google X.

Sounds like those figures are from base camp and the ice falls. Route to the higher elevation camps cut off, they don't know how many on up on the mountain. No idea yet what the final toll will be.

Yes there are many more affected in Katmandu...and the Nepalese depend on the Everest tourism. Massive overcrowding and shoddy building, it was a disaster waiting to happen.

..."accident waiting to happen"?....as opposed to being on a mountain during a massive quake?

That's an actual quote from an earthquake preparedness conference held in Katmandu exactly a week before this quake.

...unfortunately, that won't be much of a comfort to the families of the deceased.

Nepal is a mess....transitional govt, very fragile and wildly corrupt. This is a 3rd world Katrina.

That said the prediction was 1,000 dead per million.....toll is 10% that.

The tiny Nation of Mustang (Moo-Stahn-G) with its 15,000 citizens has yet to report in. With but 1 or 2 (Literally) Ham Radios, or NavSat Phones, still no word.

Mustang is on the northern Nepalese Border, while this quake seems to of tremored south to Kathmandu & Northern India.......
