Goalkeeper Joe Willis, midfielder Collin Martin and forward Christiano Francois will be sent to Richmond and are expected to report ahead of the Kickers’ match Saturday against the University of Maryland. The three will then return to D.C. United next week, ahead of their season opener March 8 at home against the Columbus Crew (7 pm, MLS Live).

Willis is entering his third season with United and has played in 23 matches for the Black and Red, making 71 saves, including a memorable penalty kick save against the New York Red Bulls in the 2012 MLS Cup playoffs.

Martin was United’s sixth Homegrown signing, joining the team midway through last season after playing one year at Wake Forest University.

Francois, who played last season at Maryland, signed on with D.C. this offseason.

D.C. United is in the process of agreeing to a July 26 friendly against Fulham at Jacksonville’s EverBank Field, home of the NFL’s Jaguars. Shahid Khan owns both Fulham and the Jaguars. The friendly would serve as one of the first events after the completion of stadium upgrades, which include one of the world’s largest video boards, cabana-style seating and wading pools.

DC United say mentality is behind improvement:
"It's a group that wants to prove something"

WASHINGTON – Much has changed at RFK Stadium in 2014. A bevy of new players. An overhauled coaching staff. A re-tooled front office.

Most importantly, perhaps, United are doing something they did very little of in 2013: getting points.

That's the result not only of a change in personnel, but a change in attitude as well. For now, it seems as if the club’s winning mentality has returned.

"I mean, [that mentality] was gone last year,” United head coach Ben Olsen told MLSsoccer.com after his team’s 4-1 victory over FC Dallas last weekend. "For a while, there wasn’t a lot of belief. This year, it’s a group that wants to prove something. It’s everyone – it’s staff, coaches, it’s guys that were here and had that [2013] season, that have a chip on their shoulder from an image standpoint."

Silva's hat trick leads United into 1st place in East

MONTREAL – There was plenty for the neutral to enjoy on Wednesday at Stade Saputo, as the Montreal Impact and D.C. United scored six goals between them in a frantic first half.

A Luis Silva hat trick was the difference, however, as D.C. picked up the three points and moved to the top of the Eastern Conference (7-4-4, 25 pts.) with a 4-2 win on Wednesday. Nick DeLeon scored the other D.C. goal.

Jack McInerney and Andres Romero replied for Montreal, who remain at the bottom of the East (2-7-4, 10 pts.).

ROCHESTER RHINOS (USL PRO) 1, D.C. UNITED (MLS) 0
    THE CHAMPIONS WILL NOT REPEAT

Steve Birnbaum's second yellow card of the match left DC United shorthanded
for the final 30 minutes of Tuesday's 1-0 US Open Cup loss to Rochester.

ROCHESTER, NY---Colin Rolfe scored in the 27th minute to send 10-man D.C. United to its first-ever defeat against the Rochester Rhinos in a U.S. Open Cup fourth round match Tuesday night at Sahlen’s Stadium.

Mike Garzi created the goal when he reached Tony Walls’ long diagonal ball down the left. Garzi beat Robinson to the byline and then cross back toward the near corner of the 6-yard box, where Rolfe appeared to redirect it from between a cluster of United defenders and across the goal line.

D.C. United had to play a man down when in the 60th minute Steve Birnbaum received his second yellow card in 10 minutes for tugging down a Rochester attacker. Moments later, the referee suspended play due to lightning, a delay which lasted 91 minutes before play resumed.

Atlanta United FC 1, DC United 3

D.C. United's Sunday visit to Atlanta United began the way many observers expected, with a barrage of pressure from the home side yielding an early goal for Kenwyne Jones.

What happened after that was a great deal less predictable.

Inspired by the mazy runs of Luciano Acosta, the visitors stunned the capacity crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium with a furious rally that pushed Major League Soccer's original United past its newest one by a 3-1 final score.
