The original announcement said it was guaranteed. But basketballinsiders.com has it listed as non-guaranteed. My guess is it's non-guaranteed.

Good catch. I copied and pasted from basketballinsiders.com. He must have just done SA. I'll edit them out of my post.

In regards to Pressey's contract -

I'm putting it down as non-guaranteed.

I would think it has a guaranteed portion. If Cliff Alexander got $100k wouldn't Pressey get more?

That went by without much fanfare. Interesting they haven't renounced the rights to Wright yet.

Blazers could deal Wright in a sign and trade if his new team wants to do that.

I wonder what unusual nonguarantees are. Does this guy actually have a copy of the contract or is he just trying to save face.

don't really need to, yet. Maybe see what happens after Aug 24 and see if we need a 3/stretch 4. I imagine that they're either a) knowing he's gone and waiting for someone to sign him, b) hooking him up by being a potential life raft if he goes unwanted, c) he's doing them a favor by not signing until they see what else they need (this one seems weird but it could be agent-hookups involved), d) having a team wait to find out what we want back in a S&T

I got a question... Do you think Portland would distribute the cap min as an incentive to the existing players if they perform to a certain level? That would be a nice bonus for our current players to play above what's expected of them.

I though about that too. Also, any other free agents this year might be swayed knowing that they not only get their salary, but might also get a cut of that large end of year team minimum salary return. But per cbafaq.com, there can't be any 'under the table' agreements.

Too bad Haywood's contract wasn't guaranteed until February.

The Bulls dumped salary by trading Luol Deng for a similar contract to get under the LT.

Actually it doesn't hurt the Blazers at all. We have $19 million in cap space right now so we can absorb more than any non guaranteed contract ever. We also don't have to waste a roster spot on a contract.

It would've potentially helped Cleveland if the Haywood contract was guaranteed at a later date as they would've had the option to wait and seek out other trades. But players get paid by the game; so if Haywood was on the roster at the start of the season he would be paid some of the contract. In the Bulls situation they acquired Andrew Bynums contract which was partially guaranteed and had been half paid for by the Cavs at that point in the season.

I think Neil should tell the players something such as "hey were going to try and use this space to get the team assets so don't expect the shortfall." Better to give a bonus they aren't expecting than to not give them something they think could be coming.

I doubt he would've brought this up with free agents, seems like it could lead to very disgruntled players. But if we do end up below the minimum it could be a potential benefit free agents notice next summer.

I think the league should change it with the next CBA so the shortfall goes into a big fund for all NBA players leaguewide. The current method puts the team and its players in an awkward spot while having the potential to be exploited.

It doesn't really have to be an agreement though. It could simply be a statement of management's plan.

"You are all aware that we are well under the salary floor--as well as the implications for each of you personally that come along that--but that we also have enough young potential to hit the roster maximum. Now, understand that while it will of course be possible to make a deal to bring in another higher-salary player later in the season (thereby moving us closer to that salary floor, if not over it), we certainly would prefer to maintain continuity and chemistry as much as possible, assuming that this team is performing and developing at a level commensurate with management expectations."

No "agreement" there, just an understanding that excellent performance carries an inherent benefit, and under-performance could result in that potential benefit being elsewhere allocated.

It looks like Montero's contract is non guaranteed. I'll update the main post.
