I don't agree with some of his positions but I think he is honest and has the most integrity of any candidate running. The press is completely overlooking him but I think he's going to grind it out and become the nominee for the dems. Hillary and Jeb have both visited Portland recently, no public appearances, just a big money cash grab from private donors. Bernie is here in Portland today, already his rally has had to move from the Memorial Colosseum to the Moda. The best thing for this country would be a presidential election between Sanders and Kasich. It would focus both parties and the nation on policy and what is best for the middle class.
will be curious if there will be a surge post pope francis addressing congress in September, focusing on economic inequality, social justice, economic opportunity, climate change?
Because they could. Poor security allowed them to crash one of his speaking engagements yesterday in Seattle.
yeah, i dont know. are the other candidates just telling them to fuck off? it appears sanders is more in line with their cause than a few other guys, why not crash their rallys instead? it just reeks of some weird low down bizniz.
Today is the 1 year anniversary of the Mike Brown shooting, there has been rallies and protests all weekend in Portland.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/evanmcsan/b...s-young-black-woman-as-new-public#.fuvw2EBAPj seems to be addressing the messaging issue with black lives matter.
Sanders made remarks at previous events that shows he doesn't get it about "black lives matter." http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle...er-protesters-shut-down-bernie-sanders-rally/ Some in the largely white audience booed and chanted for protesters to let the senator talk. A few yelled for police to make arrests. Marissa Johnson, one of the protesters, shot back, “I was going to tell Bernie how racist this city is, filled with its progressives, but you did it for me,” accusing the audience of “white supremacist liberalism.” She cited Seattle’s own police problems, including an ongoing Justice Department consent decree over use of force. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-black-lives-matter_55ad1a09e4b065dfe89ed136 Sanders grew frustrated with the protesters and attempted to stick to his message of fighting economic injustice. "Black lives of course matter. But I've spent 50 years of my life fighting for civil rights. If you don't want me to be here, that's okay," Sanders told the protesters Saturday, who chanted, "I want Bernie Sanders to say my name." www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-black-lives-matter_55ad1a09e4b065dfe89ed136 Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn, issued a statement which said: “The presidential candidates’ responses today to the powerful protest led by black activists at Netroots Nation … make clear that all Democratic candidates have work to do in understanding and addressing the movement for black lives. “Saying that ‘all lives matter’ or ‘white lives matter’ immediately after saying ‘black lives matter’ minimises and draws attention away from the specific, distinct ways in which black lives have been devalued by our society and in which black people have been subject to state and other violence.”
Progressives gentrify the shit out of black neighborhoods and then scream about how racist Republicans are. I think Bernie will fall short in the end and Hillary will drag us through a scandalous 8 years of dreck. I'll write in Bernie or vote 3rd party.
Rich people masquerading as progressives do that. And no, I'm not saying they're plants, because I agree with you about that aspect. I think that the people who do this, don't realize it prices out the people in those neighborhoods and just pushes them further out of town. In my brothers neighborhood, which isn't a nice nor a bad neighborhood, just a normal one, there is a new housing development being made. The houses in his neighborhood are 50+ year old houses, probably worth between 290-400K. The new development (about 30 houses) STARTS at 550K. Not that it's causing my brother to move, but it's artificially inflating the value of the neighborhood he lives in. That's what gentrification does, regardless of what the owners skin color is. I don't, agree, that this is racism as much as it's people living in a bubble. A bubble where you think just making houses nicer doesn't come with unwritten expenses. The bubble knows no political party.
I hope he runs as a third party candidate to draw votes away from Hillary, other than that, I would never consider voting for a socialist of any kind.
I agree with you. I work in social services and am surrounded by a lot of activist types who moved to Portland after college. I hate when people who consider themselves progressives lecture others about the evils gentrification, when they themselves are part of it.
Is Bernie Sanders really a socialist? Or just redefining socialism for America? "The Democratic candidate describes himself as one, but it can be hard to detect the traditional hallmarks of socialism at his increasingly popular rallies" http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/08/democratic-candidate-bernie-sanders-socialist
he rejects that as a possible outcome of his campaign in this feb. 15 article http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...nders-confirms-2016-presidential-run-interest
Or George Soros plants. Soros gave millions of dollars to the BLM organization, and he's backing Hillary Clinton.
Off topic, but how does having nice houses in your neighborhood hurt you? If it drives up the cost of your home, isn't that a good thing? I would much rather have nice development around my home than have a ghetto. I don't get the "gentrification" argument at all. I heard one group protesting a trader joes. Somehow that was "gentrification". Do you want to live in a place with jobs and nice buildings or a ghetto? We have no shortage of ghettos in this country.
