UNLV downs No. 3 Arizona, sends Wildcats to 1st loss of season

Instead of absorbing blows from one of college basketball's elite programs, UNLV attacked. Driving hard to the basket, crashing in for offensive rebounds and stepping in to take charges, the Rebels had Arizona on its heels instead of the other way around.

The result was one of UNLV's biggest wins in recent years and a wild celebration inside the Thomas and Mack Center.

Christian Wood had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Rashad Vaughn added 21 points, and Patrick McCaw had a key steal in the closing seconds to help UNLV knock off No. 3 Arizona 71-67 on Tuesday night.

No. 24 Colorado St. beats New Mexico St. in OT

Colorado State remains one of seven unbeaten teams in the country.

Barely. And it was far from easy.

J.J. Avila made a go-ahead layup with 31 seconds left in overtime and the 24th-ranked Rams beat New Mexico State 58-57 on Saturday night to improve to 13-0 -- the best start in school history.

New Mexico coach Craig Neal wasn't too surprised that freshman reserve guard Sam Logwood was able to turn in a big night against Colorado State on Saturday.

Logwood scored 15 points on perfect shooting to help the Lobos hand the 24th-ranked Rams their first loss of the season, 66-53. Logwood was 5 for 5 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.

After three overtimes, Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt felt fortunate just to be on the winning end no matter how hard it was to get there.

Larry Nance Jr. scored 21 points, including the go-ahead basket in the third overtime, and Josh Adams added 16 to help the 25th-ranked Cowboys survive a thriller against Fresno State with a 70-65 victory Saturday.

San Diego State coach Steve Fisher never expected his team to shoot 22 3-pointers, particularly against a team they held a big height advantage against like St. John's.

But then Fisher figured if it was working, why change?

"The threes we got were wide open and were taken by guys who can shoot and make them," Fisher said.

JJ O'Brien scored 18 points, Dwayne Polee II added 15 points on five 3-pointers against his former team and the Aztecs defeated St. John's 76-64 on Friday night in their opening round game of the NCAA Tournament.

UNLV dismisses guard Daquan Cook from men's basketball team

UNLV interim men's basketball coach Todd Simon announced Friday that junior Daquan Cook has been dismissed from the team.

"We appreciate all that Daquan contributed while a member of our team," Simon said in a statement. "He is on track to graduate this spring and we will continue to support him."

The 6-foot-2 point guard had played in 55 games during his four-year UNLV career. However, he had only appeared in four minutes over two games this season, making one of two field goals and grabbing one rebound.

The Baltimore native played in 53 games the previous two seasons while averaging 1.2 points a game.

He is the second UNLV player to leave the team this season. In December, center Goodluck Okonoboh requested a release from his scholarship to pursue another school.

Wyoming outlasts No. 23 Nevada 104-103 in double overtime

Wyoming is a tough place for visiting teams to play, especially ones in the Top 25.

Hayden Dalton scored seven of his 25 points in the second overtime and Wyoming edged No. 23 Nevada 104-103 on Wednesday night, giving the Cowboys their fifth victory in the last six home games against ranked opponents.

No. 24 Nevada beats Boise State 77-72

Twice this season, Jordan Caroline had chances to ice games from the free throw line in the final minute and failed.

He wouldn't let a third opportunity slip away.

With just under 39 seconds left, Caroline made two free throws and helped No. 24 Nevada retake the lead in a back-and-forth game with Boise State and gut out a 77-72 victory Wednesday night in a battle for first place in the Mountain West.

Martin brothers lead No. 24 Nevada past Utah State, 93-87

Cody Martin made the loss of starting point guard Lindsey Drew sting a little bit less for Nevada.

Martin led the 24th-ranked Wolf Pack to one of their finest all-around offensive performances of the season in a 93-87 win over Utah State on Saturday. The junior scored a career-high 30 points on 13-of-18 shooting.

No. 20 Nevada gets past Colorado State, earns league title

With his team struggling from the field and the chance to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the Mountain West tournament on the line, Caleb Martin took over for No. 20 Nevada.

Martin scored 25 points, including two key 3-pointers in the second half, and No. 20 Nevada clinched the top seed in the conference tourney with a 92-83 victory over Colorado State on Sunday.

No. 22 Nevada outlasts UNLV, moves on to Mountain West semis

Trailing UNLV early in the second half of a quarterfinal matchup in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, Nevada's Jordan Caroline had one thing on his mind: last year's tournament championship game.

Nevada struggled through its worst first half of the season, scoring a mere 21 points on 23.3 percent shooting ago, but used a 25-2 run to rally for an 11-point victory and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

On Thursday, Caroline had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the 22nd-ranked Wolf Pack (27-6) were ignited by a 22-6 run early in the second half, erased a 12-point deficit to seize momentum after a dismal offensive performance in the first half and notched a 79-74 victory over UNLV.
