Nobody expected the ridiculous start the Rangers had but the question is whether this team has the parts to win a Stanley Cup or are they one trade/a few parts away from dominance? McIlrath fills one of those postseason needs, he's not just a goon with limited skills, the kid can play a tough clean game. I think they need a top line scorer too but the question is who can the cap-strapped Rangers rent?

Yandle seems like an obvious trade piece with his $5.75 salary but his cap hit this year is only $2.65 so unless another team is going to eat significant dollars Keith isn't going anywhere.

The crap of going for it is over. The dumbass moves giving away first round picks have been complete and total failures. It's time the team stockpiles picks now. The reality is that the team probably won't win a cup before Hank retires. Only chance they have is to hit a HR on 2-3 players in the next few drafts and hope they have one run left.

It's been mentioned on here before, but our best and most logical chip appears to be JT Miller. With the emergence of Lindberg and Buchnevich right on the horizon, and considering that JT has an expiring contract and will need a raise, he could be a guy to move to bring back a top guy. Ideally it wouldn't be a rental but it's too early to see who is going to be for sale. Edmonton is going to be trading some forwards, but they want defense and none of our guys are going to waive a NTC to go to that disaster.

I said this in the offseason but I just have a feeling JVR is going to get traded at some point. I think Babcock wants to put his own mark on that team. It also could be a place where all the Staal's wind up after this year.

What if we gave Staal (waives his NTC to go closer to home, big hockey market and play with his bros) and Miller for JVR? JVR isn't a right shot, but he's a proven top line scorer who isn't afraid to let it fly. That'll also allow us to move Nash back to the right, where he has been MUCH more effective. Yeah maybe it's over paying, but you have to overpay if you want someone like JVR back.

    JVR - Brassard - Zuccarello
    Hayes - Stepan - Nash
    Kreider - Lindberg - Fast
    Moore - Stoll - Stalberg

Then next year (or even these playoffs), slide Buchnevich onto that 3rd line on his off-side where he excels, move Fast down to 4th and that could be a very good team. Play Skjei on D on the 3rd pair. Without Staal and Boyle, we should be able to get Yandle under contract.

    McDonagh - Girardi
    Yandle - McIlrath
    Skjei - Klein

Just ideas. Seems realistic if TOR bites.

I've been saying Miller is the chip also Prod...makes sense.

To me trading Staal (and potentially packaging him with Miller) makes the most sense of all considering we have a solid D, McIlrath has played well, Skjei could come up later this year/next year, and it would enable us to resign Yandle.

Issue is will Staal waive his NTC AND would Gorton/AV really deal Staal if we are battling for a cup? Still seems unlikely to me.

Staal is playing so poorly these days i'm not sure teams see his contract value at least equaling his production. He's not even an average dman these days which is somewhat hard to believe being he's not even 30. We may be stuck there.

    Can I dream also?
Justin Faulk.................I am astonished how automatic
he is on the PP. Every time I look up at the scoreboard,
Faulk scores on the PP. Phenominal.

Screw the Bad news Bears stockpile draft picks and wait until next year nonsense. If a deal like Prod suggested to bring someone like a JVR hinges on a draft pick I make the deal and show my world class goaltender that I want to try to win the Cup before he retires. Staal gets $6 mil for the next 3 years and then $5 - didn't like the deal and would love to see him traded but what sane GM would take on this contract? You can only hope he's still recovering from the 2 brutal injuries he suffered. The Leafs do have cap space to make a deal though.

Miller is not the only RFA , his salary this year is $874 so he's due a raise. But there's also Hayes $900; CK $2.6; Etem $851 and McIlrath $600. Figure Boyle $4.5; Moore $1.5 and Stalberg $1.1 are gone next year so that leaves $7.1 to resign free agents. I wonder if any team would be interested in Nash?

Would do this in a heart beat, but unless Toronto feels staal just needs a change of scenery they wont make this trade.
They already have one major disappointing dman in their lineup.

I am with Prod and panzer. I just don't think you can reverse course with this team now and stockpile picks. Not sure what that gets you with Hank getting older and a core that is built to win now.

With that said, if we did fall out of it this year I could see us making moves for next year to build back up for a run. But I don't see us selling off good pieces for picks to stockpile for 3 or 4 years from now.

Staal will get better, he always does, so to me that isn't the issue. I think we should deal him because I don't love his contract on this team AND we have Yandle who I rather have and no shot we can have both after this season. I just don't know if Staal would waive his NTC though. I do know that is the one contract I would want back. With or without Yandle I don't love that deal, but once we got Yandle that contract became real bad for us.

We'll see how it plays out. For now I am saying have patience.

The D will come around, and this chance for McIlrath to play a bunch of games in a row will be good for us.
Klein will be back in 10 days or so.
I liked the Kreider/Lindberg/Nash line. I think when Stepan comes back in 4 weeks we could put together some interesting combos upfront.

To me that leaves us where we always are...we need another forward that can score some dirty playoff goals to be complete. Let's see if we can get it done this time. Offer Miller offer Etem offer another kid. Maybe Buch comes over and can help late season/in the playoffs.

I don't know, but I do know we need to be patient and not jump ship after 28 games when we are in 2nd place...1 point out of 1st.

I remember when we traded for Justin Falk a few years ago. Safe to say I was real pumped for about 10 seconds until I realized the spelling wasnt just a typo.
