    Ole Miss charged with violations

The NCAA has formally charged the University of Mississippi with dozens of rules violations in three sports, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports.

The school has received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA enforcement staff alleging roughly 30 violations in football, women’s basketball and track and field, sources told Yahoo. It is unclear at present what the breakdown is in terms of violations by sport. The NCAA does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

Calls to officials at Mississippi and the Southeastern Conference were not immediately returned.

This is the latest step in a long, laborious NCAA investigation, part of which predates football coach Hugh Freeze’s arrival at Ole Miss in 2012. Yahoo Sports first reported about the investigation in October 2014.

According to standard NCAA protocol, Ole Miss and/or other parties charged with violations have 90 days to respond to the allegations. Unless there is agreement on the facts and the case can be resolved by summary disposition, a Committee on Infractions hearing date will be established. The COI generally meets six times a year; it most recently met last week. - See more at: http://www.prosportsdaily.com/artic...h-violations-393174.html#sthash.YuBIrxTL.dpuf

Auburn lands 5-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown

Five-star defensive lineman Derrick Brown provided the final big boom Auburn's recruiting class needed Wednesday.

Brown picked the Tigers over Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi State during a signing ceremony at Lanier High in Buford, Georgia.

"My relationship I have with the coaching staff down there is excellent and I felt like, last night, just sitting around talking to my parents, that I found that was the place for me," Brown said on ESPN2.

Brown credited his relationship with defensive line coach Rodney Garner and head coach Gus Malzahn pulling him to Auburn.

"I think that for the next three to four years that it's going to be a great to watch Auburn football," Brown said. "That's why I made this decision."

Brown visited Auburn on Jan. 15 and Auburn coaches assured him Auburn's business school would fit his needs, providing Auburn some much-needed momentum down the stretch as he visited Georgia and Tennessee on the final two weekends of the recruiting cycle.

The 6-foot-4, 317-pound tackle could contribute immediately next season for the Tigers behind Montravius Adams and Devaroe Lawrence and others

Ole Miss QB Ryan Buchanan leaves team

Ole Miss is down to just three scholarship quarterbacks.
Ryan Buchanan, who was set to be a redshirt junior in the fall, has decided to call it a career in order to focus on his academics.

“I came to the conclusion a few months ago that football would not be my future and it was time to start applying myself 100% to my future,” he told Ole Miss Spirit. “It’s time for me to find my passion beyond football.”

Buchanan was a backup behind Bo Wallace for two seasons and then competed for the starting role entering the 2015 season, but was beat out by junior college transfer Chad Kelly. Buchanan said he considered transferring, but ultimately decided to stay at Ole Miss as a student. He is on track to graduate next spring with a degree in managerial finance.

“The reason I got up at 5:30 a.m. four days a week for three years was to play football at Ole Miss. I would not take that kind of dedication with me anywhere else,” Buchanan said.

Athletes named in sexual assault lawsuit filed against University of Tennessee

Six women, listed only as "Jane Does," filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday claiming the University of Tennessee has created a culture that enables sexual assaults.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim the university "uses an unusual, legalistic adjudication process" against victims who step forward claiming to be assaulted by student-athletes, especially football players.

The Tennessean was the first to report the filing of the lawsuit.

Five current and former Tennessee athletes were named in the lawsuit: former basketball player Yemi Makanjuola, former football players A.J. Johnson, Michael Williams and Riyahd Jones and a current football player identified only as "John Doe."

The 64-page lawsuit, obtained by Omnisport, goes on to detail each of the allegations made by the six women.

Makanjuola, who played two seasons with the Volunteers from 2011-13, was accused of making sexual advances toward a woman, "Plaintiff Doe I," while at his apartment on Feb. 14, 2013. The lawsuit said Makanjuola "forcefully grabbed Plaintiff Doe I’s head, pushing it toward his privates and ignored Plaintiff Doe I’s objections and got on top of her, forcefully removing her clothes."

Makanjuola was dismissed from the team two months later.

Mizzou dismisses Trevon Walters after last week’s arrest

A running back wearing No. 20 ran through drills Monday as Missouri’s fall camp rolled into its third week. It was not, however, sophomore Trevon Walters.

First-year coach Barry Odom dismissed Walters from the team after he was arrested Friday on one count of stealing, a felony, and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit device, both misdemeanors.

“I met with Trevon this morning,” Odom said Monday after practice, “and due to team rules, team policies, he’s been dismissed from the program.”

Columbia police allege that Walters stole a debit card from a residence July 17 and made unauthorized purchases with the stolen card. He was identified through surveillance video at one of the retailers where he made a purchase.

Walters, who missed last season recovering from a knee injury and never played in a game for the Tigers, was released on a $5,500 bond Friday and suspended indefinitely at that time.

Florida suspends Jalen Tabor, C'yontai Lewis

Florida has suspended two players from the team, including All-American cornerback Jalen Tabor, coach Jim McElwain announced via the team website Wednesday.

"Both C'yontai (Lewis) and Jalen will not be involved with the team or practice due to behavior that is not acceptable," McElwain said. "By no means are these bad guys and yet consequences have been handed down. We will not look the other way when it comes to breaking of team policies."

Tabor has been an outspoken figure this offseason, with McElwain endorsing his highly visible presence on social media and in the traditional media. The junior even had his own media day to New York City, a trip sponsored and set up by the athletic association.

But apparently he did something that didn't sit well with McElwain. Both he and Lewis, a redshirt sophomore tight end, will miss the season opener against UMass.

Ole Miss RB Jordan Wilkins to miss season due to 'administrative error'

Ole Miss will be without one of its top running backs in 2016.

The reason? Academics… sort of. The school announced Thursday that because of an “administrative error,” junior Jordan Wilkins will miss the entire 2016 season.

“Jordan Wilkins will miss the 2016 regular season after not meeting NCAA standards for progress toward degree,” the school said in a statement. “An appeal was filed with the NCAA for Jordan’s reinstatement based on an administrative error but was denied this week. The athletics department takes full responsibility and holds itself accountable when situations occur with our student-athletes. We will support Jordan to the fullest during this time and look forward to seeing him return to the field.”

Florida names Luke Del Rio its starting quarterback

The wait is over for Florida fans. They will know who the starting quarterback will be for the 2016 season opener against UMass.

The school announced that Oregon State transfer Luke Del Rio will start the season opener. Del Rio, a redshirt sophomore, beat out Austin Appleby, who transferred from Purdue and freshman Feleipe Franks.

“Luke is going to work as the starter the rest of camp and start in the season opener barring any unforeseen development,” Florida head coach Jim McElwain said per the school. “Our other quarterbacks remain in the plans and are ready to move forward and help the Gators any way they can.”

Aggies safety Justin Dunning out for season with torn ACL

Texas A&M safety Justin Dunning is out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee, Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin confirmed on Thursday night.

Dunning had suffered the injury earlier in the week during camp and Sumlin said at that time the sophomore was being evaluated by the medical staff. Dunning (6-4, 225) played in 11 of 13 games last season for A&M, and led the defense with nine tackles against Ball State.

He played as a true freshman last year, so he will redshirt this season.

Tennessee offensive lineman Chance Hall is out after suffering a knee injury

The Tennessee offensive line suffered a blow this week as sophomore offensive lineman Chance Hall underwent surgery on his knee on Thursday.

The injury is not ACL related, and when Hall will return is unclear at the moment. Hall was supposed to start the season at right tackle even after missing spring practice due to a shoulder injury that also required surgery.

Mississippi State senior Nick James can't stay out of trouble.

The defensive lineman was arrested for the fourth time since 2013, this time on a charge of public intoxication early Sunday in Starkville, Miss., the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office told the Starkville Daily News.

The school released the following statement on the incident Sunday afternoon: "(Head coach Dan Mullen) is aware of an incident involving Nick James that occurred last night, and he is currently getting more information on it."

Auburn defensive back Stephen Roberts suspended for season opener with Clemson, possibly longer

Auburn defensive back Stephen Roberts, who was arrested last week on misdemeanor charges for an unlicensed firearm and attempting eluding of an officer, is suspended for Saturday's season opener against No. 2 Clemson and possibly longer.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced the punishment for Roberts, who was arrested during a traffic stop last Wednesday night in Auburn, during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

"We will be playing without Stephen Roberts," Malzahn said. "Stephen will be suspended for this game. ... It will be week-to-week."

Roberts was "a passenger in a vehicle and fled from officers during a traffic stop," according to Auburn Police Capt. Lorenza Dorsey, who said the firearm in Roberts' possession was a handgun.

Malzahn said Auburn's team policy is for players not to have firearms, licensed or not.

Both charges are Class A misdemeanors in Alabama and carry a penalty of no more than one year in jail and up to a $6,000 fine. Roberts is due in court at 8 a.m. on Nov. 17. The Opelika native was released on bond of $2,000 later Wednesday night.

"Minor setback for a major comeback," Roberts wrote in a tweet Saturday afternoon.

Chubb runs for 222 yards, Georgia beats NCarolina 33-24

    Nick Chubb left no doubt.

He's fully recovered from that grotesque knee injury.

Less than 10 months after going down on a play that's still tough to watch, Chubb ran for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 18 Georgia to a 33-24 victory over No. 22 North Carolina in Kirby Smart's coaching debut Saturday night.

No. 25 Florida honors Spurrier, struggles to beat UMass 24-7

On a night when retired coach Steve Spurrier was honored along with his 1996 national championship team, No. 25 Florida looked nothing like a potential Southeastern Conference title contender.

Luke Del Rio threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, and the Gators did just enough to beat UMass 24-7 on Saturday night and extend the nation's longest winning streak in season openers to 27.

No. 9 Georgia survives scare, tops underdog Nicholls 26-24

For about two minutes, Kirby Smart's first home game as Georgia's coach couldn't have gone better.

"It was great at the beginning of the game," Smart, the former Georgia safety and assistant coach, said of his first game at Sanford Stadium as coach. "It was great the first drive."

After that, it was one big, ugly scare for Smart and his No. 9 Bulldogs.

Georgia scored two quick-strike touchdowns -- one on offense, one on defense -- in a span of about two minutes after Nicholls took a third-quarter lead, and the Bulldogs escaped with an uninspiring 26-24 win over the Colonels on Saturday.

Arkansas gets wild double-OT win over No. 15 TCU, 41-38

Arkansas appeared on its way to a big early season victory over No. 15 TCU following a pedestrian debut and a year after a stunning Week 2 loss to Toledo.

Then the Razorbacks looked like they had let the victory get away. And finally, they walked off with their fifth win over a ranked opponent as an unranked team since 2014.

Quarterback Austin Allen ran 5 yards for the winning score in the second overtime, and Arkansas pulled out a wild 41-38 victory over the Horned Frogs on Saturday night, snapping a 14-game TCU home winning streak that ranked third nationally.
