No. 4 Maryland rallies for 72-61 win over No. 18 Purdue

Wrapping up a stretch of four tough games in 10 days, No. 4 Maryland switched into survival mode late in a Big Ten matchup with No. 18 Purdue.

Down 51-47 with 6 minutes left, the Terrapins cranked up the defense and turned to Rasheed Sulaimon and Robert Carter Jr. on the offensive end.

The strategy worked. During an afternoon in which two of its most dependable players struggled to score, Maryland pulled out a 72-61 victory Saturday.

Forbes leads No. 10 Spartans to 89-73 rout of Michigan

It was hard for Tom Izzo to pinpoint exactly why Michigan State had so many open shots from 3-point range against Michigan.

All that really matters is the ball went in.

"It's hard to say what went right, what went wrong. We executed pretty well," Izzo said. "When you make shots, everything changes."

Bryn Forbes scored 23 of his 29 points in the first half, part of an early barrage of 3-pointers by No. 10 Michigan State in an 89-73 rout of rival Michigan on Saturday. Forbes made seven of the Spartans' 10 3-pointers in the half, and Michigan State finished 14 of 22 from beyond the arc.

Taylor lead Penn State to 68-63 win over No. 22 Indiana

Brandon Taylor and his Penn State teammates traveled nearly 6,200 miles across Big Ten country over the last five weeks and nearly forgot what it felt like to play at home.

But a raucous atmosphere on Saturday greeted them inside what's been a usually-subdued Bryce Jordan Center where the Nittany Lions shocked No. 22 Indiana in a 68-63 win.

Jok scores 23 to lead No. 5 Iowa past Illinois, 77-65

Just over three minutes into the second half, Iowa's Peter Jok stole the ball from Illinois guard Khalid Lewis and glided to the other end of the court for a two-handed dunk.

It was part of a 5-minute span after halftime in which the junior scored seven of the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes' points, pushing their lead to 15 and delivering a blow the Illini wouldn't recover from.

Jok finished with 23 points and Iowa (19-4, 10-1 Big Ten) coasted to a 77-65 victory.

No. 2 Maryland overpowers Bowie State 93-62

Taking a break from its rigorous Big Ten schedule, No. 2 Maryland enjoyed a stress-free encounter against an overmatched foe.

In the process, the Terrapins broke a school record that had stood for 35 years.

Rasheed Sulaimon scored 16 points, and Maryland's reserves received plenty of playing time in a 93-62 victory over Bowie State on Tuesday night.

No. 18 Purdue beats No. 8 Michigan State 82-81 in OT

No. 18 Purdue turned Tuesday night's game into an impromptu senior night celebration.

Rapheal Davis, the Boilermakers' defensive stopper, played the offensive game of his life. A.J. Hammons, the 7-foot center who patrols the post, nearly posted a triple-double. And together they refused to let No. 8 Michigan State beat them again.

Davis made 1 of 2 free throws with 4.6 seconds left in overtime and Hammons wrestled the ensuing rebound from several defenders to preserve an 82-81 victory that set off an overdue celebration.

Hoosiers use late surge to upset No. 4 Hawkeyes

Indiana's Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell wanted the ball Thursday night.

After taking blow after blow in the second half from No. 4 Iowa, Ferrell finally found a way to punch back.

The senior point guard beat the defensive pressure, found open teammates and finished the game by making four straight free throws to help the Hoosiers rally for an 85-78 upset victory -- after they had blown a 16-point lead.

No. 2 Maryland loses at home to Wisconsin, 70-57

Maryland tried just about everything to get the ball in the basket -- driving to the hoop, shooting from the outside, working it inside and out.

    Nothing worked.

The second-ranked Terrapins went nearly 11 minutes without a field goal in the decisive first half, fell behind Wisconsin by 16 points and never recovered in a 70-57 loss Saturday night.

Michigan scores final 11 points to beat No. 18 Purdue 61-56

Derrick Walton was 0 for 9 from the field when he drove to the basket, was knocked off balance and still managed to flip the ball off the glass and in.

"Honestly, I didn't see it (go in) -- I kind of got, like, clobbered," Walton said. "I just kind of reacted once the crowd reacted."

Walton and Zak Irvin scored the game's final 11 points, and Michigan overcame an awful stretch of shooting in the second half to beat No. 18 Purdue 61-56 on Saturday. Walton's layup was part of that late rally, and Irvin's jumper from around the free throw line with 1:09 remaining gave the Wolverines the lead.

Denzel Valentine-led No. 8 Michigan State tops Indiana 88-69

Denzel Valentine was calm on a court filled with relative chaos, taking shots when they were there and making passes when a teammate had a better look.

Valentine had 30 points, 13 assists and only one turnover to help No. 8 Michigan State pull away to beat Indiana 88-69 Sunday -- Valentine's Day.

No. 4 Iowa holds off skidding Minnesota 75-71 to regain 1st

Last season, a rough start might have derailed Jarrod Uthoff's entire night.

Now, as a senior, Iowa's leading scorer barely flinched.

Uthoff was held scoreless for nearly 17 minutes to open the game, but finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots to help the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes hold off skidding Minnesota 75-71 on Sunday.

Minnesota stuns No. 6 Maryland for 1st Big Ten win of year

Williams Arena public address announcer Dick Jonckowski celebrated his 30th season of calling games at The Barn on Thursday, and as the clock ticked down on one of the most surprising nights of his career, he couldn't contain himself.

"Gophers win! Gophers win! Gophers win!" Jonckowski hollered as more than 10,000 fans rushed the court. "How about that? The Gophers win!"

Nate Mason had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists to help Minnesota get its first Big Ten win of the season with a stunning 68-63 upset of No. 6 Maryland, the Golden Gophers' first victory in more than two months.

No. 6 Michigan State beats Ohio State 81-62

Michigan State senior guard Bryn Forbes said he had an "OK" game.

    Ohio State would probably disagree.

Forbes made six of his seven 3-pointers in the second half when the sixth-ranked Spartans pulled away for an 81-62 victory Tuesday night, their seventh in eight games.

Wisconsin upsets No. 8 Iowa 67-59

Iowa is officially in a slump.

This isn't the best time for the Hawkeyes to be playing some of their worst basketball either.

Bronson Koenig scored 15 points and Wisconsin upset eighth-ranked Iowa 67-59 on Wednesday night, handing the Hawkeyes their second straight loss and third in four games.

Ferrell scores 27, leads No. 18 Indiana past Illinois 74-47

For 20-plus minutes Thursday night, No. 18 Indiana was in a tough game at Illinois.

The Illini took a 28-27 lead into halftime, and the crowd was enjoying a chance to make some noise and direct it at the Hoosiers.

Then the Big Ten leaders turned things over to Yogi Ferrell.

The senior guard had 27 points, 19 in the second half, to lead the Hoosiers past the Illini 74-47 in a tight game that turned into a blowout.

No. 20 Purdue knocks off No. 10 Maryland behind A.J. Hammons

In the minutes leading up to the start of Saturday's Top 25 showdown with No. 10 Maryland in Mackey Arena, No. 20 Purdue's senior center A.J. Hammons pulled sophomore guard Dakota Mathias aside for a conversation.

"I gave him a pep talk," Hammons said, "I told him, "Shoot it, don't pass it." That allowed me to get great position inside."

Hammons scored 19 points, and Mathias added a career-best-tying 17 to lead five Purdue players in double figures, and the Boilermakers held on for an 83-79 victory over Maryland.
