Tomas Plekanec named Team Czech Republic captain

    Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec was named captain of Team Czech Republic at the World Cup of Hockey 2016, the Czech Ice Hockey Association announced Monday.

    Plekanec, 33, was captain for the Czech Republic at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and the 2012 and 2016 IIHF World Championships. He has served as an alternate captain with the Canadiens the past two seasons, scoring 14 goals and 40 assists in 82 games in 2015-16.

    Plekanec has three goals and four assists in 10 Olympic games (2014, 2010 Vancouver). In 12 NHL seasons, all with Montreal, he has 216 goals and 553 points in 843 games.
