Texas State football coach Dennis Franchione has agreed to a five-year contract extension that pays him $400,000 annually starting in 2014.

The agreement announced Thursday says Franchione will remain at his current base salary of about $350,000 until February. Franchione took over the program in early 2011 and had a five-year deal.

Miami and Arkansas State schedule home-and-home series
    [IMG]

The Hurricanes and Red Wolves will meet in August or September of 2014 at Miami's Sun Life Stadium and will close out the series with a game at Liberty Bank Stadium in Jonesboro on Sept. 9, 2017. It will mark the first time Arkansas State -- the two-time defending Sun Belt champ -- has played a home game against an ACC opponent.

Idaho football to play USC in 2015
    [IMG]

The Idaho football team will play Southern Cal on Sept. 12, 2015, the Trojans announced Wednesday. Idaho played at then-No. 1 USC in 2007, the teams’ first meeting since 1929. USC won 38-10. USC is just the latest high-profile opponent on the Vandals’ schedule.

Idaho will play at Mississippi (2013), at Florida State (2013), at Florida (2014) and at Auburn (2015). Idaho played at LSU in 2012. The Vandals will be paid $850,000 by Mississippi, $950,000 by Florida State, $975,000 by Florida, $1 million by Auburn and $1.1 million by USC.

In 2007, USC paid the Vandals $600,000 for the game. The Vandals are playing an independent schedule in 2013 and will join the Sun Belt as a football-only member in 2014.

stAte gets 1.3M to play at Southern Cal in 2015
    [IMG][IMG]

JONESBORO, Ark. (6/26/13) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir announced Wednesday a one-game contract has been signed that will send the Red Wolves’ football team to Los Angeles, Calif., in 2015 to play Pac-12 member USC for the first time in school history.

A-State will face the Trojans on Sept. 5 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, giving the Red Wolves two announced non-conference opponents on their 2015 schedule. ASU is also slated to host SEC foe Missouri on Sept. 12, 2015, in the second game of a home-and-home series in Jonesboro.

“With its outstanding tradition and history of success, we are excited to add a program the caliber of USC to our 2015 football schedule,” said Mohajir. “This will be a great opportunity for our program to be displayed in one of the largest media markets in the world. USC is very selective with their scheduling, so to be able to secure a game with them for the first time in our history is a great testament to our players, coaches and overall program.”

ULM QB Kolton Browning tears quad

Louisiana-Monroe coach Todd Berry says starting senior quarterback Kolton Browning is out indefinitely with a torn quad muscle and likely will miss the rest of the season.

Browning, the Warhawks' career passing leader, was hurt when he was sacked and fumbled in the third quarter of ULM's 31-14 loss to Tulane on Saturday night.

Louisiana-Lafayette downs Tulane to win New Orleans Bowl

With Terrance Broadway toughing out the New Orleans Bowl with a cast on his broken right forearm, Louisiana-Lafayette figured its fortunes might hinge on whether its defense could make a few big plays.

Ragin' Cajun defensive backs Corey Trim and Sean Thomas answered that call.

Trim returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown, Thomas' second interception set up Hunter Stover's go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter, and Louisiana-Lafayette held off Tulane 24-21 Saturday night for its third straight New Orleans Bowl victory.

Troy defense forces 4 turnovers, upsets LSU at Death Valley

Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers basked in the scene of teammates cupping their hands around their ears to better hear the triumphant howls of several hundred traveling fans in a mostly empty, 102,000-seat Tiger Stadium.

Silvers was in the stands the last time Troy visited Death Valley in 2008, when LSU overcame a 31-3 second-half hole for the largest comeback in Tigers history. Memories of that game provided Silvers with particular satisfaction in being part of another Trojans squad that also took an early lead -- and held on this time.

Neal Brown put Troy -- and himself -- on the map by upsetting LSU

Troy pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the season by going on the road to LSU and beating the Tigers on Saturday in Death Valley -- at night, no less.

Afterward, Neal Brown appeared to keep his composure. The 37-year-old coach stood before his team inside the visiting locker room, with cameras trained on his every word.

“Hold on a second,” he said. “It takes a champion to come on the road. This is as tough a venue as there is. All right? This is as tough a venue, man. And we did so many good things. I’m serious, man.”

Then he couldn’t hold it in anymore.

Silvers lifts Troy over UNT, 50-30, in New Orleans Bowl

When Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers glanced around the Superdome, his eyes would stop on the name of Archie Manning, who has become one of his mentors, or on spots in the stands where he's sat during games he attended as a fan.

During his next visit, he'll be able to look at spots on the field where he threw four touchdown passes, as well as the end zone where he ran for a short score, to help the Trojans beat North Texas 50-30 in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday.

Appalachian St beats Toledo 34-0 in Dollar General Bowl

Appalachian State's improved defense was a huge reason the program closed the regular season on a three-game winning streak and won a share of the Sun Belt Conference title.

The Mountaineers saved the best for last in a Dollar General Bowl blowout.

Appalachian State's swarming, opportunistic defense was the catalyst for an impressive 34-0 victory over Toledo on Saturday night. The Rockets came into the game averaging nearly 40 points per game, but fell behind early and looked completely overmatched. They managed just 146 total yards while turning the ball over four times.
