No. 2 Ohio State holds on for 17-16 win over Michigan State

Before Ohio State could move on to next weekend's showdown with Michigan, the Buckeyes had to deal with a different nemesis.

As usual, Michigan State gave Urban Meyer's team all it could handle.

Mike Weber ran for 111 yards and a touchdown, and No. 2 Ohio State held off Michigan State 17-16 on Saturday after the upset-minded Spartans missed a 2-point conversion with 4:41 remaining.

Without Speight, No. 3 Michigan shakes off Indiana, 20-10

No. 3 Michigan had its weakest passing performance in 15 years. Playing without Wilton Speight was quite a challenge.

Fortunately for the Wolverines, senior running back De'Veon Smith had the best game of his career.

Smith ran for two touchdowns in a 3:33 span late in the third quarter and finished with a career-high 158 yards rushing, helping Michigan shake off Indiana for a 20-10 win Saturday.

No. 8 Penn State wins 7th in row, keeps Big Ten hopes alive

No. 8 Penn State is a win away from getting a piece of its first conference title since 2011, the year Joe Paterno was fired.

Tyler Davis kicked a career-high four field goals and the Nittany Lions stayed in the hunt for a berth in the Big Ten Conference title game with a 39-0 victory over Rutgers on Saturday night.

Early scoring flurry sends No. 7 Wisconsin past Purdue 49-20

No. 7 Wisconsin did everything it could to get back in the College Football Playoff chase Saturday.

It's probably going to take more than a blowout at Purdue.

T.J. Watt returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown, and the Badgers scored 35 points in the final 8 1/2 minutes of the first half of a 49-20 victory against the lowly Boilermakers.

Iowa tops No. 16 Nebraska 40-10, Wisconsin wins Big Ten West

With a possible trip to the Big Ten championship game at stake, Nebraska fell flat.

C.J. Beathard threw three touchdown passes and the Hawkeyes pummeled No. 16 Nebraska 40-10 on Friday, knocking the Cornhuskers out of Big Ten title contention and sending Wisconsin to the championship game.

No. 6 Wisconsin runs past Minnesota late for 31-17 win

A fourth-quarter flourish erased memories of a jittery first half for No. 6 Wisconsin against Minnesota.

The latest installment of the most-played rivalry in major college football ended with a familiar scene: the Badgers triumphantly holding up Paul Bunyan's Axe.

Corey Clement ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and a big-play defense pitched a second-half shutout in a 31-17 win over the Golden Gophers to keep the trophy for a 13th straight season.

Curtis Samuel's TD lifts Buckeyes over rival Wolverines in 2OT

Curtis Samuel swept in for a 15-yard touchdown after Ohio State barely converted a fourth-and-1 and the second-ranked Buckeyes beat No. 3 Michigan 30-27 in double overtime Saturday to win one of the greatest games in the history of one of college football's greatest rivalries.

Penn State beats Michigan State to reach Big Ten title game

Trace McSorley has gotten used to seeing extra defenders crowding the line of scrimmage this season and he's become adept at taking advantage of it

With another defense selling out to stop star running back Saquon Barkley, McSorley completed 17 of 23 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 7 Penn State to a 45-12 victory over Michigan State and the Big Ten East title Saturday.

No. 7 Penn St. rallies to beat No. 6 Wisconsin 38-31

As Penn State's band played and Lucas Oil Stadium rocked, thousands of fans clad in their traditional white shirts chanted "We Are Penn State."

It might have been more fitting if had it been "We are Penn State -- and we are back."

Five years after a child sex abuse scandal tainted the reputation of the school and its football program along with the legacy of late coach Joe Paterno, quarterback Trace McSorley put the Nittany Lions squarely back in the national spotlight Saturday night with an epic 38-31 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game. It was the largest comeback in the six-year history of the game.

Badgers running backs intent on releasing 'untapped potential'

When Wisconsin running backs coach John Settle was asked to assess his group last spring, he spoke glowingly of how scary good they could be when the season arrived. With seniors Corey Clement and Dare Ogunbowale leading the charge a year ago, Settle knew the long lineage of Badgers tailback excellence remained in good hands.

But Clement and Ogunbowale are gone now. And that means Settle has a different, more cautiously optimistic perspective this spring about his current crop of players.

"Phew," Settle said, breaking into a laugh. "We've got some work to do. We have a ton of talent. But it's talent that's kind of untapped potential is how I would look at it."

Mike Weber wants to be Ohio State's new household name at running back

A complete escape from his predecessor might not be possible.

The lobby at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center prominently features an Ezekiel Elliott jersey. Elliott's image adorns a banner honoring recent Ohio State running backs that hangs over an end zone on the practice field. And Elliott still remains the prime example his position coach uses to make a point.

But posting just the third 1,000-yard season by a freshman tailback in school history has a way of somewhat minimizing the shadow that loomed over Mike Weber even during his breakout, debut campaign. The mentions of how Elliott used to do the job come less frequently, the praise for Weber’s own work ethic are on the rise -- and he can go almost a full 10 minutes of a news conference without hearing a single comparison to his former teammate.

Northwestern's Xavier Washington suspended following drug arrest

Northwestern defensive lineman Xavier Washington has been indefinitely suspended following his arrest early Sunday.

A university spokesman confirmed that Evanston police arrested Washington at an off-campus location. The Daily Northwestern reported that Washington faces one felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance after police found him with 0.5 grams of cocaine at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Northwestern is investigating the situation.

Ohio State springs forward as new No. 1 in 2017 top 25

Once again, Alabama was the big winner in the NFL draft.

The Crimson Tide had seven players picked in the first 55 selections and nine chosen in the first 80. Overall, 10 Alabama players were taken by NFL teams this past weekend.

Of course, that impressive haul means Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban faces another major rebuilding (reloading?) job in Tuscaloosa. With star players like Jonathan Allen, Reuben Foster, Marlon Humphrey and O.J. Howard moving on to the NFL, Saban will have to find reinforcements before this coming season.

WR Rayshad Lewis, son of ex-Ravens star Ray Lewis, transferring to Maryland

"I just felt at home and very comfortable with the coaching staff, the offense and how I would fit in ... and their direction and plan for the program," Lewis told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday.

Lewis posted 40 receptions for 476 yards and two touchdowns in his freshman season at Utah State. He said he was transferring from the Aggies last month.

Michigan State expelled WR Keith Mumphery after investigation into alleged sexual assault

Michigan State expelled former football player Keith Mumphery in the summer of 2016 after the current Houston Texans wide receiver was investigated for an alleged sexual assault.

A police report about the incident, first obtained by the Detroit Free Press, says a woman accused Mumphery of raping her in March 2015 several months after they met on the dating app Tinder. Mumphery told police that the incident began with the woman seducing him in her dorm room on the night in question. The woman disagreed with his account.

Michigan WR Grant Perry gets probation for assault outside East Lansing bar

Michigan wide receiver Grant Perry was sentenced Friday to 12 months' probation and 60 hours of community service work as punishment for an assault that occurred outside of a bar in East Lansing last fall.

Perry, 20, pleaded guilty in June to a felony charge of resisting a police officer and a misdemeanor count of assault and battery. According to a police report from the incident last October, Perry grabbed a woman's backside and groin during an altercation outside of the bar. He then failed to provide police with identification and ran from officers when they arrived.

Fully built by Harbaugh, now what?

Jim Harbaugh climbed a tree for a recruit.

    He rode go-karts for another.

He had sleepovers and barnstormed around the country hosting satellite camps.

And, you know what, it worked.

Entering his third season at Michigan, Harbaugh and his staff have signed 37 ESPN 300 recruits -- including DE Rashan Gary, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2016 -- after the previous Michigan staff signed 28 in the four classes before Harbaugh arrived. The old adage for college football coaches is "just wait until he gets his guys in there." In extraordinary fashion, Harbaugh has gotten his top-level targets at Michigan.

Iowa still undecided between Stanley, Wiegers at QB

The competition for Iowa's vacant quarterback job will extend into at least next week.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Saturday following a public workout at Kinnick Stadium that junior Tyler Wiegers and sophomore Nathan Stanley will continue to split repetitions with the first team as the coaching staff tries to find a replacement for two-year starter C.J. Beathard.

Stanley moved past Wiegers as a true freshman in 2016, but he doesn't appear to have distanced himself much during spring or fall camp. Ferentz said that a scrimmage set for Friday could help separate the two, but for now he's content to let Stanley and Wiegers continue to compete for the starting job.

P.J. Fleck is absolutely convinced he can get Minnesota rowing in the right direction

The question comes in many ways. Some use more explicit words, some come with softer phrasing. All, though, sound similar.

"What the hell is wrong with P.J. Fleck?"

But colleagues, supporters, doubters and reporters in the Twin Cities, home to a historically frigid college football scene, begin most conversations about Minnesota's new coach with some variation of another, more important question: Is he for real?
