No. 12 Saint Mary's rides Hermanson's hot hand past Stanford

Randy Bennett envisioned how good his team might be a month into the season, and then a month after that comes conference play, once Saint Mary's got everybody healthy and roles defined.

The 16th-year coach already realizes this group could emerge as one of his best yet -- and he has had some talented teams tucked away in the East Bay hills.

"It's up there. We'll see," he said. "Potentially, yeah. Potentially we could be. We have to do it."

Even if he had to give the Gaels a little lecture about playing defense during halftime. They responded by running away from Stanford in the second half, with Calvin Hermanson scoring a career-high 25 points and knocking down a career-best seven 3-pointers in No. 12 Saint Mary's 66-51 win Wednesday night to stay unbeaten.

No. 8 Gonzaga breezes past Mississippi Valley State 97-63

Gonzaga held a significant size advantage over Mississippi Valley State but the big difference was on the perimeter.

The eighth-ranked Bulldogs hit 12 3-pointers, nine in the first half, and they remained unbeaten with a 97-63 victory over the winless Delta Devils on Thursday night.

No. 8 Gonzaga beats 16th-ranked Arizona 69-62 in Hoophall LA

Gonzaga was in attack mode from the opening tip , eager to assert itself against an Arizona team that had owned the rivalry in recent years.

Przemek Karnowski scored 18 points and the eighth-ranked Zags beat No. 16 Arizona 69-62 on Saturday in the inaugural Hoophall LA doubleheader at Staples Center.

Karnowski leads No. 8 Gonzaga to 1st 10-0 start in history

Gonzaga coach Mark Few was looking for a hard-nosed opponent to schedule at home in December to toughen up his No. 8 Bulldogs.

    He found one in Akron.

The Zips gave Gonzaga all it could handle before a late surge lifted the Bulldogs to a 61-43 victory Saturday night.

No. 12 Saint Mary's bounces back from loss to beat UC Irvine

Saint Mary's got a big lift from backup center Jordan Hunterwhen he hit a 3-point shot from midcourt just before halftime.

Jock Landale, who starts ahead of Hunter, added his own signature moment early in the second half with a midcourt steal and a soaring dunk that helped get the 12th-ranked Gaels back on track after suffering their first loss of the season.

Landale had 15 points and seven rebounds, Evan Fitzner added a season-high 12 points and No. 12 Saint Mary's bounced back from its first loss of the season to beat UC Irvine 84-53 on Sunday night.

In the course of making 18 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, No. 7 Gonzaga has set so many program records that comparatively few are left.

No. 19 Saint Mary's beats Loyola Marymount in WCC opener

    - Saint Mary's was tested in the second half Thursday night and passed. And the way the Gaels look at it, that should pay off down the road.

Emmett Naar scored 19 points and Jock Landale added 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 19 Saint Mary's over Loyola Marymount 72-60 in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

No. 7 Gonzaga beats Pepperdine 92-62 in WCC opener

No. 7 Gonzaga beat Pepperdine by 30 points, dominated the boards and forced the Waves into 20 turnovers.

    The verdict?

"We played OK," said Jordan Mathews, who scored 15 points on five 3-pointers. "We had some sluggish moments."

Nigel Williams-Goss and Przemek Karnowski each had 16 points as Gonzaga beat short-handed Pepperdine 92-62 on Thursday night, extending the best start in program history.

No. 7 Bulldogs have to rally to beat Pacific 81-61

Gonzaga guard Jordan Mathews felt he had a pretty good plan to get Pacific's defense on its heels by pump-faking and driving to the basket.

Coach Mark Few thought differently and gently urged his guard tandem -- Mathews and Josh Perkins -- to stop passing up the open looks they were getting from the perimeter.

In a span of 10 minutes, the duo did just that to help the Bulldogs remain unbeaten.

Mathews scored 16 points and fueled a big run in the second half to help No. 7 Gonzaga beat Pacific 81-61 on Saturday night.

Reserve Tanner Krebs sparks Saint Mary's victory

Saint Mary's reserve Tanner Krebs had struggled all season with his 3-point shot, but San Diego coach Lamont Smith wasn't surprised when the redshirt freshman from the Australian island of Tasmania made all four of his attempts Saturday night.

"We knew he could shoot the basketball. Nobody on their roster is a bum," Smith said after Krebs' 12 points helped trigger a 72-60 win by the No. 20 Gaels.

Landale leads No. 19 Saint Mary's past San Francisco, 63-52

With San Francisco double-teaming him almost every time he touched the ball down low, Jock Landale and the Saint Mary's offense had a tough time getting going.

Better positioning in the paint by the 6-foot-11 center and a couple of critical 3-pointers off the bench from Tanner Krebs late in the second half helped get the Gaels rolling.

Landale had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 19 Saint Mary's overcame its sluggish start to beat San Francisco 63-52 on Saturday night.

No. 5 Gonzaga stays undefeated with 93-55 win over LMU

Fifth-ranked Gonzaga may be the nation's last remaining undefeated major college basketball team, but the Zags say they aren't feeling any extra pressure.

"We do just a great job of taking care of business and keeping control," guard Josh Perkins said after Gonzaga crushed Loyola Marymount 93-55 on Thursday night. "We want to keep it going."

No. 3 Gonzaga poised for top spot after thumping Pepperdine

Gonzaga sure tried to present itself as the top team in the country Saturday night.

Now to see if they've convinced the voters.

The No. 3 Bulldogs are the last unbeaten team in the country and looked every bit of it in a dominant 96-49 victory over outmanned Pepperdine.

No. 4 Gonzaga beats No. 19 Saint Mary's 74-56 in WCC final

Gonzaga coach Mark Few brought in veteran transfers and one of the best recruiting classes in school history this season, a group that's been called the best in his 18-year tenure as head coach.

The Zags have lived up to the hype so far, nearly pulling off an undefeated regular season and earning another West Coast Conference Tournament title. Next up could be another No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 22 points, Przemek Karnowski added 15 and No. 4 Gonzaga won its fifth straight WCC tournament title by beating No. 19 Saint Mary's 74-56 Tuesday night.

Gonzaga advances to third Elite Eight in school history with 61-58 win over West Virginia

Jevon Carter fired up two potential tying 3-pointers only to see them go off-target and Gonzaga didn't allow West Virginia to get off a third.

A defensive stop was a fitting way for this offensively challenged Sweet 16 matchup to end.

Jordan Mathews hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with under a minute to play and top-seeded Gonzaga survived a rough shooting night all around to beat No. 4 seed West Virginia 61-58 Thursday night to advance to the West Regional final.

Top-seeded Gonzaga reaches first Final Four with rout of Xavier

The criticism dogged Gonzaga wherever it went, no matter how much it won.

The Zags run up their record by beating up on teams in a weak conference, then always seemed to come up short as the calendar went deep into March. Few outside of Spokane believed the program Mark Few helped build from scratch belonged in the national powerhouse conversation.

Overrated no more, Gonzaga is finally headed to the Final Four.

The Zags took the pressure of history head on with a performance worthy of their No. 1 seed, rolling to a dominating 83-59 win over Xavier in the West Region final on Saturday that should silence those critics.
