I'm quoting you just out of convenience, since it is the most recent, versus grabbing an older comment I keep meaning to address. I keep seeing people writing about how our free agency last year failed, how Neil was wrong, how he made a mistake, etc. Neil's plan, it seems, all along, was rebuilding around Damian and CJ. And it wasn't expected to be an immediate turn around, but a 2-4 year plan. Unfortunately for perception, year 1 we greatly overachieved, and it shifted expectations. Of fans, media, maybe even the team. But we still weren't expected to be any sort of true title contender this season, especially in his long term view.

We signed all of our free agents specifically to retain assets. Not because we thought we had a finished product, and let's lock it all in, and go up against GS. And Neil mentioned that multiple times, not letting assets walk away for free. Fans complained about it because we were in cap hell. But the options were lose them for nothing, or retain and use later. Now, we see rumors coming about interest in Crabbe, Mason being moved, interest in Harkless, and people think the offseason was a failure somehow. The goal was to retain assets to use later. And that is potentially happening not out of failure, but out of design. If Crabbe is swapped for anything, who knows if he will be, or for what, then that doesn't signify that signing him was bad, it's the exact opposite. That we kept him around to use in a later swap to get something else we wanted that we couldn't get in free agency.

^^^ Nicely said. This is clearly an unfinished product.

Beat writer Doug Smith is reporting that while Toronto does not want to trade any of their young players, they would be willing to move Jared Sullinger and a 2017 first-round pick.

If we were interested (since we have to come close to matching salaries) it would have to be either Aminu, Festus or Ed going out (alone, not combined). Sounds like they would have the most interest in Aminu.

I think the plan is to try to parlay the 3 picks into a player like Butler/George/DMC. For that reason, I think any trade we make before the deadline will be with the idea of obtaining more assets to make the Butler/George/DMC trade on Draft Day.

We're not going to trade Dame/CJ for any of those players. Adding one of them to Dame/CJ/Nurkic should be enough to make us a power in the WC - especially if GSW falls apart due to contract situations. It also gives us a core of great players just entering their prime AND youth in Nurkic/Harkless (if we don't have to trade him) to hopefully sustain a strong roster into Dame's 30s.

We know that there's bad blood between Butler and CHI, and between DMC and SAC. It's only a matter of time before George gets fed up with IND. I think it's all but given that at least one of those players (Butler) will be on another team next season. It might take a little while longer for George/DMC to split from their teams, but I'd guess at least one of them gets moved by next season's Trade Deadline.

Even though TOR's pick won't be great, it is another asset. I'd gladly trade Aminu for Sullinger/Pick - cuts another $7.5M from our salary and gives us a 4th pick!

Those three picks won't be enough to land butler, especially if Boston offers up that Brooklyn pick. Cousins is almost 100% staying in Sacramento. I doubt it's enough to land George either, I mean come on, two of those picks will be in the 20s. First round picks are valuable, but they're not THAT valuable.

Oh and we'd have to match salaries as well.

I can see Butler. George and DMC not happening though.

DMC specifically isn't turning down 219 MIL to sign for max of 120 MIL somewhere else. That is difference he can get from SAC vs other teams. Almost 100 MIL!!! Wow.

Just to be clear, I don't fault Neil for the summer free agency and agree he couldn't let assets go for nothing and had to take a flyer on Turner or get nothing. My comment is that he took a chance that that mix could make up for the perimeter defensive deficiencies of Dame and CJ, and I would suggest that there is no data to believe that the current mix (pre-Nurkic) would be able to do that. As such, he should move to Plan B. In my mind Neil's main job is to see if there is some combination of defensive players who can blanance that guards lack of defense to make an overall decent defensive team. Right now that should be his focus. He has a couple years to play with that and then will likely have to move to Plan C.

I'd do that too. Also, Evan Turner and Sullinger have chemistry, they were both a big part of bostons second unit last year.

Take a look at what UTH got for Williams and what DEN got for Melo - teams trading star players don't get good value in return.

Also, I'm hopeful that OUR pick will be in the 5-8 range, with an outside shot at Top 3. That makes the trade a lot more enticing than if we end up with the 10-15th pick. And of course it would include Crabbe and probably Vonleh (or whatever young player they want) if the acquiring team thinks they can turn him into a player.

DMC is going to re-sign with SAC - but he'll get traded afterwards. He doesn't want to give up the money, and SAC doesn't want to trade him for peanuts, but the two will both get what they want after he signs a new contract.

Melo isn't a good example, his contract was running out and told Denver he wasn't going to sign an extension. That hurts a players value. Williams was in a similar situation.

There's no need to settle for Chicago since Butler is locked in long term. Same with George.

Cousins is going to re-sign in Sacramento, anything after that is speculation, not based on anything factual.

Yea those 3 is off the table for sure. Neil properly looking to get power foward on his next move. I know he older than our group is but Gibson from Chicago would fit really good with our front court. Can Reb and play very good defense and also can score the ball.

Everything here is speculation - that's the point of boards like this.
Butler's value is hurt by the wide-spread knowledge that he doesn't like management and management isn't sold on Butler being the guy they want to build around.
The moment George gets fed up with IND his trade value will be less.
That's literally the only time star players get traded - when they're upset with their team, and their trade value is weakened.

If the Bulls decide to blow it up, I think we can help them out. "WITH A 28-29 record, giving them the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Bulls find themselves at an impasse. Mere days remain until the trade deadline, and a reported internal debate rages on: Should they blow things up? If so, should they trade Jimmy Butler, their 27-year-old shooting guard who is signed to an affordable five-year, $95 million max contract through the 2019-2020 season? Is he the future they should build around or is he the road to future assets?"

We arent getting jimmy butler. The celtics can offer brooklyns pick, jaylen brown and contracts in order to get him. We have nothing of comparable value that we would give up.
