He grew up around Houston, played college ball there, retired from Houston and won an NBA Championship there. I don't blame him at all for that. Houston is his home for all of his life and where he got his ring. Now if he'd won his ring here, then I'd have an issue.
I don't think he lacked heart. He was really not a great half court player though. I remember they usually had Porter take the last shot.
I was around 12 and pretty heart broken at the time when he got traded, especially for who we ended up with. I gotta admit, Houston became my 1B team for a few years and was pulling for Clyde to win a ring. Even played full 82 game seasons of NBA Live '96 as the Rockets. I can't imagine switching allegiances now that I've been so emotionally and financially invested in the Blazers for as long as I have been.
This dude was before my time (when I was young and without an interest in basketball), but I've often heard of him, and I knew who he was when I became a Blazer fan. Man...he sure looked like fun to watch!
I remember a playoff game, it looked like Kersey was taking a bad shot but actually it was an alley-oop to Clyde, who materialized out of nowhere and slammed it down. Magic Johnson was calling the game and said "Call him Mister Glide!" Loved it.
I was like 5 years old when he was traded to Houston, so I only really remember him as a Rocket, Kersey and Porter as Spurs, and for football Joe Montana as a Chief. At least I remember Scottie Pippen as a Blazer though!
I sure as hell wished more pro athletes repped Portland that way. It's why I respect Payton Pritchard so much for going to Oregon. It makes up for every local musician who makes it big and then shits all over this town.
