No. 16 Xavier wins 6th straight, 97-82 over St. John's

Alone atop the Big East, No. 16 Xavier is taking a lot of confidence into its most challenging stretch yet. And the Musketeers are getting senior guard Myles Davis back, too.

Edmond Sumner had 20 points and seven assists on Saturday, leading a balanced offense that swept Xavier to a 97-82 victory over St. John's. The Musketeers (13-2, 3-0) are the last unbeaten team in league play.

No. 22 Xavier pulls away to 86-75 win over Georgetown

As the first half wound down, point guard Edmond Sumner headed to the end of the Xavier bench, sat down and winced. His left shoulder was hurting so bad.

Not bad enough to keep him from frustrating the Hoyas again.

Sumner led a second-half surge that swept No. 22 Xavier to an 86-75 victory over Georgetown on Sunday, ending the Musketeers' longest losing streak in three years.

Georgetown pulls away late to upset No. 11 Butler 85-81

Georgetown coach John Thompson III watched anxiously while his team scrambled to get in position for a shot late in the game.

Eventually, Jessie Govan bailed the Hoyas out.

The sophomore center hit a 3-pointer from NBA range with 1:03 left, and Georgetown pulled out an 85-81 upset at No. 11 Butler on Saturday night.

Villanova dominates St. John's in record-setting win

Villanova may not have played the perfect game but the Wildcats weren't far off.

    Want some proof?

The second-ranked and top-seeded Wildcats shot 63.2 percent (36 for 57) and committed just five turnovers in a record-setting 108-67 victory Thursday over St. John's in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.

Xavier stays alive in Big East with win over No. 18 Butler

Trevon Bluiett helped Xavier advance to the semifinals of the Big East Tournament and he may just have ensured the Musketeers will be playing in the NCAA Tournament as well.

Bluiett scored 23 points, including a tough foul line jumper that broke the game's final tie with 16 seconds left, and Xavier beat No. 18 Butler 62-57 on Thursday night.

Hoyas dismiss coach John Thompson III after 13 seasons

Georgetown has fired coach John Thompson III, the school announced Thursday.

Thompson spent the past 13 seasons in charge of the Hoyas, going 278-151 with eight NCAA tournament appearances. The Hoyas finished 14-18 this season, including a 5-13 mark in Big East play.

"It is with profound regret and deep appreciation that I informed John Thompson III this morning that the university will no longer be retaining his services as our head men's basketball coach," university president John J. DeGioia said in a statement.

"For 13 years, he has been one of the elite coaches in college basketball. His performance as a coach has been exceptional, and he has served our community with remarkable distinction and integrity, sustaining our commitment to the academic performance of our students and providing them with the very best preparation for their lives beyond the Hilltop."

Xavier knocks off Arizona, earns first trip to Elite Eight since '08

In a story March 24 about an NCAA Tournament game between Xavier and Arizona, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Xavier's record was 30-13. It should have been 24-13.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Xavier knocks off Arizona 73-71 in West Region

Xavier, behind Trevon Bluiett's 25 points, upsets Arizona 73-71 in West to reach Elite Eight

    Rollie Massimino dies at 82

Rollie Massimino, who won more than 800 college basketball games and coached Villanova to an improbable national title in 1985, has died at the age of 82.

Massimino had been battling lung cancer. He died at his home in Florida.

He was best-known for leading an eighth-seeded Villanova team to a title with a 66-64 victory against No. 1 seed Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in the 1985 championship game. Massimino coached Villanova for 19 seasons and compiled a 355-241 record before leaving for UNLV in 1992.

    Patrick Ewing Has The Floor

At Georgetown, you always had to go through John Thompson Jr. to get to Patrick Ewing, and more than three decades later nothing much has changed. You need to enter the new campus facility named after Thompson. You need to pass the bronze statue of the bespectacled coach, whose likeness stands with arms folded and a towel dangling from his shoulder while he stares through someone in the distance.

To see Ewing, you need to go four floors up in the Thompson Center, where the elevator opens wide to an outsized picture of Ewing in his No. 33 jersey and omnipresent gray T-shirt, his 8-foot wingspan stretching from wall to wall. At 55, roaming the hallways above the practice court while checking his cell messages, Ewing looks every bit the towering presence he was during those years in the 1980s when he made the Big East the Big East.

If you spend a few decades around basketball players, you know that standing beside 7-footers like Ewing as an average-size man can be an interesting experience. Some appear to be a mere 6-foot-8. Ewing? He always appeared to be 7-foot-4.

He is Georgetown's head coach now. In other words, he has Thompson's job in Thompson's building, where Thompson still keeps an office. The man who first called Ewing and told him he needed to pursue this opening? John Thompson Jr., right after his son, John Thompson III, was fired by the very school his old man put on the basketball map.

Paschall, Brunson lead No. 6 Villanova past Columbia 75-60

Villanova was greeted by a team sign plastered on the side of its temporary digs as the bus rolled into Philly.

The Wildcats appreciated the housewarming gift -- though it was more of an advertisement -- and looked right at home in another season-opening win.

Eric Paschall scored 15 points and Jalen Brunson had 14 to lead No. 6 Villanova to a 75-60 victory over Columbia on Friday night.

Rodriguez leads No. 23 Seton Hall past FDU 90-68

It was a classic case of proven veterans rising to the top against unproven youngsters.

"When you have as many seniors as we have, you have a lot of confidence in them," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said Friday night after the 23rd- ranked Pirates defeated outmanned Fairleigh Dickinson 90-68 in the NIT Season Tip-Off first round game. "We're like an aged steak."

Patrick Ewing gets first win as Hoyas defeat Jacksonville

Patrick Ewing led Georgetown to the pinnacle of college basketball, then had a Hall of Fame career in the NBA. His first game back at his alma mater as coach, though, provided him an entirely new experience.

"As a player, I never really got nervous," Ewing said. "As a coach, I got nervous. The biggest difference is I'm counting on these guys. As a player, I'm counting on myself."

Cheered loudly in his return to Georgetown, Ewing led the Hoyas to a 73-57 win over Jacksonville on Sunday in his sideline debut.

Powell's 18 leads No. 23 Seton Hall past Monmouth, 75-65

Two years ago, Myles Powell was a little out of shape, a bit overweight and simply not ready to play college basketball.

But now, the Seton Hall sophomore is proving that he's more than ready.

"Myles has become addicted to being in shape," his coach, Kevin Willard, said after Powell scored 18 points to lead No. 23-ranked Pirates past Monmouth 75-65 in the NIT Tip-Off matchup Sunday.

No. 5 Villanova sets blocks mark in 113-77 rout of Nicholls

Mikal Bridges rejected consecutive shots by Roddy Peters in the lane, producing "oohs" from the crowd.

And No. 5 Villanova wasn't done, not even on this possession.

Omari Spellman brought the fans and bench players to their feet by swatting Tevon Saddler's follow attempt from behind, giving the Wildcats three blocks in 8 seconds and setting the tone in a record-setting 113-77 rout of Nicholls on Tuesday night.

Rodriguez's 23 lead No. 22 Seton Hall past Indiana 84-68

It's not called senior leadership for nothing. And Seton Hall has good seniors, especially their three returning 1,000-point scorers in Desi Rodriguez, Angel Delgado and Khadeen Carrington.

"We knew we were playing a good Big 10 team," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said after his 22nd-ranked Pirates dominated Indiana 84-68 on Wednesday night as part of the Gavitt Tip-Off Games at the Prudential Center.

    Thomas' career-high 24 leads Creighton over No. 20 N'Western

Although Creighton jumped out to a big lead early, Khyri Thomas believed his team would have to overcome adversity to win Wednesday night.

    He was right.

Thomas had a career-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, Martin Krampelj added a career-high 17 points and Creighton beat No. 20 Northwestern 92-88 in a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup.

Bridges perfect from 3, No. 5 Villanova blows out Lafayette

Lafayette coach Fran O'Hanlon planned to switch defenses often in hopes of slowing down No. 5 Villanova.

It ended up not mattering what the Leopards did, not with the Wildcats shooting like this.

Mikal Bridges set a school record by hitting all six of his 3-point shots and scored a career-high 24 points in Villanova's 104-57 rout Friday night.

Rodriguez scores 19, No. 22 Seton Hall beats pesky NJIT

Kevin Willard has more than very three talented seniors on No. 22 Seton Hall. His young kids are starting to step up.

Senior Desi Rodriguez scored 19 points and Seton Hall used an 18-2 second-half run to shake off pesky NJIT and post an 82-53 victory on Saturday.
