Some of those guys you listed aren't MAX. Chandler Parsons, for example, is several $million less.

GSW is one of two teams (Cavs the other) who are going to pay $100M in tax with a significant chance to win the Finals.

Totally agree. We certainly don't get them in free agency.

If you're going to nitpick about that, then technically CJ isn't a max player either.

Most of the players listed are not max and noone knows what they ll be in the future. Talking about our team and maxing Nurkic here. Other teams problems are their problems.

Bump. Still on this. Recent injury reaffirms this notion.

Then again, can we get him on the cheap this year?

Dame already did. He earned the 30% "Derrick Rose" max last summer with his All-NBA teams and only took 27.5%.

Nurk played well after we traded for him. I remember Mr. Ratliff working his way into a huge contract after doing the same. I've been impressed with the big man, but there is no harm whatsoever waiting to see if his play continues and he isn't prone to injury.

The harm could be the difference of $5-$8 mill though. If we wait, his value goes up right? If we sign him now for less than max, we save money.

Camby is another. Again on the tail end of his career, but in both his and Ratliff's case, we had to either pay or watch them walk.

Different with Nurk. He'll be a RFA the summer after.

And how did that pan out with Batum and Minny or Crabbe?

Worked perfectly fine in Nic's case. If you're worried about Nurk turning into AC (extremely overpaid for little production), it really doesn't make sense to invest all that much in him now or in the future.

The point flew over your head. We waited and then had to match other offers of which we wouldn't have paid as much. Almost sure of it. We waited on Nic and allowed his agent to play us. We waited on Crabbe and got stuck with a bad contract because we had to match.

Waiting allows another team to stick it to us. So no, I don't think it worked out perfectly in either case.

What exactly did we get played with? Nic got a perfectly fine contract. Hardly any incentives or poison pills. And we didn't really match anything. His agent came back to us and we gave him the same.

you don't think that we could have signed him for less a year earlier?

The point is, if we wait, we take the chance of having to match some other team's offer that might be more than what he would be willing to sign with for us right now.

I think the point is flying over your head.
The only way Nurk signs an extension this summer is if it is near max. The only downside for Portland is if it is for a full max which is at most $1-2 M per year difference.

The benefit of waiting is that Portland has more negotiating power (especially if he has a less than stellar year). The Batum scenario worked out perfectly. The Crabbe situation is different because there was a LOT more available money in FA than there has been or will be for the foreseeable future. Trailblazers just made a bad business decision there....

See I disagree. Why would we want to bank on him having a less than stellar year????
Isn't the proposal based on he is the man we want and is the future? How does that equate to wanting to wait in case he sucks?

So in the NBA do you take chances based on young players getting better or worse????

Obviously its all about what Nurk is willing to sign, but why wait to just offer him the max? Why not offer him less than now and if he passes then he passes, but if we don't we lose that chance.

Thats the point I think you and Yayuza are missing.
Its a no win if we wait, unless he gets injured or sucks. but if we offer him a contract now, then we keep our options open and varied.

If he is ok to sign for less than max (lets say 85M/4 years) then do it. If he demands the max there is absolutely no reason to do it this summer.
