The legendary singer, songwriter, keyboardist and co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band endured heartbreaking tragedy and addiction during his life. Gregg Allman, the soulful singer-songwriter and rock 'n' blues pioneer who founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane, and composed such classics as "Midnight Rider," "Melissa" and the epic concert jam "Whipping Post," has died at age 69. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010. Allman "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia," read a statement posted to the singer's official website, noting that the family planned to release a statement soon. "Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times." http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gregg-allman-dead-southern-rock-trailblazer-was-69-992288
RIP! I was just listening to his music the other day.....that dude had some serious miles on him...69 seems to be the magic age for rock stars with drug addictions in their history to pass away.....weird.
Rest in peace Gregg. A forefather of southern rock, I grew up with his music. Yet another legend gone. At least he can join his brother Duane once again. Be free Gregg.
I know man either they are joining the 27 club or they are getting to around 69 and that's all she wrote. But, drugs and booze take a toll man. He had a liver transplant in 2010 so he wasnt in that great of health. The 60s and 70s, that was a lot of partying man.
Gregg Allman had a really good sense of humor whenever I saw him interviewed or read about him. One of the early Allman Brothers lineup's favorite things to do was play stick ball on mushrooms while listening to Coltrane. God certainly has a place in heaven for people that can have fun like that.
Met him a few times, was always kind. Like to flirt with the girl stagehands. Zac Brown did a great cover of whipping post last night, something planned for tonight too I think.
