This is making the best of a bad situation if true.

Germaine de Randamie, who defeated Holly Holm in a controversial fight months back, claiming the inaugural women's featherweight championship, has since been recovering from a hand injury. However, she refuses to fight top contender Cris Cyborg citing Cyborg's prior drug violation even when she is ready to return, putting the entire division in limbo.

Ariel Helwani is reporting that the UFC is working to put together Cyborg vs. Invicta FC champion Megan Anderson for UFC 214 and the full featherweight belt will be on the line, effectively stripping de Randamie and rebooting the division. Or perhaps more accurately GDR is vacating rather than defend the strap. Either way it is a bad look.

Now, it is fair to say that the 145-lbs belt is a made up belt. Of the two girls in the division when the started it this year, Holm has moved back down to bantamweight and GDR has gone into hiding. The UFC rushed it, refusing to give Cyborg the time she requested to prepare, but now they have the opportunity to fix it. Keep in mind that the women's bantamweight division was made up as well when they put Ronda in the title fight with Carmouche. Gotta start somewhere.

Yet there is still something to be said about the fact that, even with the #1 and #2 featherweights in the world competing in this bout, the division beyond the two of them is extremely shallow. The UFC is attempting to add a 125-lbs. flyweight division which more closely represents the bulk of competitors. Whether the 145-lbs. division will ever get off the runway is another story. I don't think they care. They know that Cyborg sells and whoever they feed to her doesn't matter.

    Odd situation all around.

UFC Europe posted this rumour as true, then deleted the Tweet.

GDR has been caught off-guard by the rumour.

    https://www.mmafighting.com/2017/6/...ely-no-idea-i-was-being-stripped-of-ufc-title

"I had absolutely no idea that I was being stripped of the belt," de Randamie told MMAFighting.com moments after the news broke. "I found out through social media. Cyborg (Justino) is going to fight Megan (Anderson) for the belt.

"Nobody ever told me anything about it."

GDR still refuses to face Cyborg and will return to bantamweight when she fights again in the UFC.

UFC Europe re-posted the Tweet. Sounds like all of this is official.

GDR will go down as the worst UFC champion ever.

GDR just screwed herself out of DW ever letting her near another title shot in any division in the UFC. If her plan is to ever hold gold she may as well ask for her release.
