The Rangers were a few mental blocks away from being in the ECF with an old D and some forwards looking like they had been drugged. They would never purposely tank anyway but with the revamped D and expected growth of Vesey/Buch/Miller there's no reason they can't compete for the EC. Pitt will step back a little, and Toronto is still probably another year away from serious SC contention. Lundqvist still has a year or two of high quality play in him i believe with proper rest. Getting a good backup will be important.

We are not tanking, not what we do. Don't expect us to intentionally stink for 5 or 6 or 7 years which is what the Pens and Oilers and Leafs and to a lesser extent the Hawks did. Not happening here.

And we'll see at C. Let's talk on July 3rd or 4th and we'll see what the team looks like. Not ready to have that discussion right now with 23 mill of cap space and 3 or 4 holes to fill. We do have a nice base though. And I also don't think you need studs to win a cup. This is not the NBA. Yeah it doesn't hurt as you see with the Pens, but you can win in the NHL with very good players and depth.

I am with 71 here. We outplayed the Sens and were right there to make the ECF despite a flawed team. Now that doesn't really mean sh*t at the end of the day because we lost and that's that, but we are not a team that is empty and looking at some dark times. I love what Gorton did the over the past week getting rid of Girardi and Stepan, great start. With the right adds over the next 8 or 9 days we can be right there in a wide open East. You have the Pens but after that it is open. Yes the BJ's and Leafs are coming on, but neither are world beaters, and the Pens cannot perform at that level every year.

So let me see what Gorton does and then we can get a feel for how this team looks heading into next season. We will be making a lot of moves real soon, and at the very least I am very excited for July 1st. And I also have a lot of faith in Gorton, let's see if he continues to reward that faith.

As for Smith, I would expect a deal worth 4.2 to 4.5 per season. Length 4 or 5 years I'd guess.

If the PP ever gets to being above average this team could really compete for a SC.

If Shatt comes here the PP has to get better. He is a R shot. Play Zib on the 1st unit and that is two R shots, something we have lacked. The PP should improve with Shatt for sure I'd think.

Our P.P. will continue to suck as 2 more right handed hockey players are off the roster

Stepan sucked on the PP so whatever. Anyway, the same thing they said about Yandle and Boyle...They were the PP "specialists" who were supposed to improve the PP. How did that turn out.

This kid Andersson has a shot to make the team from a lot of people I've listened to on the radio. Rare for the Rangers to do that but they definitely have some spots open. Buch is key this year. Hope he has gotten a lot stronger in the off-season. Don't count Gropp out either. Fits the system like a glove.

Sounds like we may be closing in on a deal to keep Smith (if it happens it will happen prior to Saturday I'm sure). I wonder if Gorton sees Shatt and Smith together as the D fix, or if he thinks keeping Smith is enough. Without Shatt I really wonder who plays with McDonagh. Really hard to count on a guy like DeAngelo or another kid in that spot. It is also possible that Shatt wants a real big deal, and I don't see Gorton doing that, so we may pass. Who knows, but this is a great time of year...less than 5 days from the fun starting.

Brendan Smith's agent says that he continues to have "good dialogue" with Jeff Gorton and said that "hopefully" the two are working toward a resolution that would keep Smith with the Rangers. (NY Post)

Smith's agent says that both sides are "trying to make it happen." (NY Post)

Michael Stone may not be a bad option. Markov is out there but he is old. Same thing with Streit.. not sold on giving a dman a big contract. The team was no better and the power play was no better when Yandle was here

Resign smith and go young on defense in addition to McD, skjei, Staal god damn it, Deangelo and zobrovsky (I probably butchered that name). Need Graves to be on this team but don't see how unless gorton figures a way to jettison Staal. Really hope Gropp can make this team this year. Don't want shatt or the high price tag he's going to someone with. Let tampa sign him

Do not be surprised to see Staal in the minors this season. My guess is he has been asked to waive his NTC and told that going to the minors is a possibility. Talent wise he can still help teams out there but he sucks compared to what Graves would give us. Or even the Russian kid they signed. Rangers would have to eat half his contract most likely in a deal. Though, I think the Av's could be a taker.

As of today, June 27..........the Rangers have 23 mill in cap space, so why would I judge them as a playoff team or not right now.

The D is darn interesting man. With his quest to find McDonagh a real partner I would be shocked if it is Smith and that's all, but who knows. If Shatt wants that huge money deal Gorton will not bite, and he shouldn't. But if not Shatt then who? Maybe we swing a deal for a partner to play with McDonagh.

I go back and forth on Shatt. I think he'll be here based on him being from NY and being a huge Rangers fan growing up. And then I read something that paints a more negative picture about what he may want, and how Gorton won't do that and I think he won't be here. Back and forth.

I wish I could fast forward to Saturday now.

Maybe we shouldn't count Sean Day fully out either. Guess is he'll start in the AHL, but he is top end talent and potential. Could be a call-up this year. Lefty that plays RD, so there's a need for sure.

I'll say this, we do have a lot of potential real good dmen almost ready to make the jump. Outside of Day maybe none project as 1st pair dmen, but a bunch of good # 3 or # 4 dmen is not a bad thing to have.

Again...what will we do on D...I want to know now...LOL.

Brooks continues to be a moron. Sucking off Day. Not even mentioning Ryan Graves who is a stud. Shame the kid played for a clueless coach on a team that sucked all season. Brooks is so old and lazy as a writer now you can't take 80% of the stuff he writes seriously. He is so out of touch with this team. His moronic Stepan trade demands proved that. You weren't getting a proven, top right handed d-man for a overpaid, inconsistent, lazy, non faceoff winning center. Puhlease.

He might be a little over the top on Day, but I have seen others say that as well. The kid has a shot to be real good. The not mentioning Graves part while frustrating, I agree with you, shouldn't take away from his talk about Day I don't think. He has real solid potential.

BTW.......................a NHL team never will have enough defensemen; the more in your system, the better!

    Getting closer:

Elliotte Friedman writes that the Rangers and Smith appear "headed towards a deal." (Sportsnet)

Sounds like they may be kicking the can on Marleau but I don't see how they could afford him, and sign both Shatt/Smith. Seems undoable. I don't think Marleau would want just one year but maybe.

I liked Smith here. Didn't think he wouldn't be a dickhead. He's showing me something. Not going for the money. If he was, they wouldn't be closing in on a deal. Shattenkirk is not in the fold IMO. He'll go for the money. Unless the Rangers have a deal for Nash to get a center. I don't see it.
