And that is my point. Offer him less now. we wont be able to later. If we wait, we lose that option and potential to nail him down for less and thats not a bad thing either. If he wants to win, he will help us get better players around him and the guards.
If we wait and someone else offers him a max and he signs, we have no options left.

No. Stupid to do it now. Love him, but prove you can stay healthy

If you give him offer now he either accept it or he doesn't. If he doesn't than we wait until he RFA and match any offer. Anyway he will be a Blazer for the future.

So it would be stupid to offer him 18/4 right now?

    I 100% disagree.

Again. How often do we have a big like this we have a chance to lock up long term? why wait until another team straps us with a max?

Not sure if it's wise to lowball a player like Nurk, if the Denver incident never happened sure why not throw an offer out there to see if he'll take it.
But it did happen, can't ignore it. Don't want to piss the diva off.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
If Nurkic is interested in a deal substantially less than the max right now (to lock in generational wealth a year early), then signing him this off-season makes sense. If he either wants the max or something close to the max, then wait for next off-season and match. An extra year of information is important. It's not just health--remember that Nurkic went from "center of the future" to out of Denver's plans. He certainly played amazingly well for Portland, but it was for 20 games. Players have had unsustainably hot quarter-season stretches before. Not that I'm forecasting that for Nurkic, but if you see him play at that level for a full season, there's far less uncertainty in valuing him as a max player.

It's far more important to get this right than to save a few million dollars per year, IMO. If the worst should happen and Nurkic suffers a major injury or regresses back to decent-but-not-great, you're not staring at yet another albatross of a contract.

Again, I'm not saying that that's the likeliest scenario, but Portland gets another year to wait and they should take it.

You do not give Nurkic an extension this summer. You wait until the summer of 2018, and try to clear up cap space by then (Turner's, Leonard's, and Crabbe's contracts will be more tradeable by then).

We'd have $16M more to spend during the summer by waiting and letting Nurkic's $7M cap hold (or whatever it will be) stay on the books instead of signing him to a contract now and having a $23M+ figure on the books.

If we waited on C.J., we would've had $15M in cap space this summer, if we freed up the books. In hindsight, we probably should've waited on him too.

His money of course. I can get there. Just give me eternal life, and about 10,000 years. No problem....

The Bosnian Beast save Portland’s season. Did he earn a max contract extension in the process?

    Yes.

It's fascinating to listen to like, Oklahoma City podcasts where they fret about how much Andre Roberson might get offered as a restricted free agent and how imperative it is to find someone to take Kanter in to space so their owner doesn't pay any luxury tax.

That kind of attitude might have been fine years ago, but now, with plenty of owners willing to eat huge losses in order to win championships, that really won't fly for long.

yea he played 16 games, i'll wait to offer him an extension especially if the number he wants is insane. If he wants 4/50 sure but otherwise i'll wait.

Agree with this. Would rather wait till he plays more games, injury is completely clear. After Allen Crabbe got paid as well as many of our other guys and kind of stayed the same or regressed a little, I would prefer to wait before throwing a huge contract out there. Give it half a season then we will see

comparing Nurk to Crabbe or others are just nonsense, Nurk is TOP 10 C in the NBA, are Crabbe and others TOP 10 in their position, good god... Nurk wont regress or stay the same, hell improve cause here he has every single needed ingredient to make it happen, but personally I think Blazers will wait till next summer and then offer him contract, I think theyll wait to see if he has injury problems

even if he plays great next season and you offer him contract next summer, who can guarantee he will not regress after that... I want him to stay, whether is that gonna happen this or next summer, I dont care really

Wait to sign him in case we shed enough salaries to have cap space next summer.

Probably makes sense on both sides to offer some kind of compromise non-max deal. If he takes it then you save some cash. If he wants to bet on a good year then that is fine too.

absolutely not, I loved what I saw but Nurk needs to prove he can play at that level for a WHOLE season and we need to see if he can stay healthy. We lose nothing while waiting and if teams spend like drunken sailors again this yr there will be less money available the following summer when the capspace is expected to basically go sideways and not up.
