No. 2 Ohio State pulls away to beat Indiana 49-21

J.K. Dobbins wanted to give his fans back in Texas something to cheer about.

His Ohio State teammates and Buckeyes fans jumped right on board.

The freshman broke a 15-year-old school record by rushing for 181 yards in his college debut, J.T. Barrett threw three touchdown passes and No. 2 Ohio State managed to pull away in the second half for a 49-21 victory over Indiana on Thursday night.

No. 9 Wisconsin overcomes slow start, routs Utah State 59-10

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst delivered some motivational words to his team at halftime of their season opener.

It was probably wasn't the cleanest of speeches given the way his ninth-ranked Badgers played most of the first half against Utah State.

Whatever Chryst said worked. Wisconsin found its footing in the second half, pulling away in dominating fashion for a 59-10 win on Friday night.

Barkley dazzles in No. 6 PennState's 52-0 win over Akron

Each time Penn State's offense drove toward Beaver Stadium's south end on Saturday, Saquon Barkley passed 16 Penn State students in the front row whose bare chests, painted blue and white and beginning to smear from the rain, spelled out S-A-Q-U-O-N F-O-R H-E-I-S-M-A-N.

Barkley has tried to block out personal hype to keep focused on his responsibilities as a team leader. He'll need to keep doing it, especially if he keeps playing like this.

Michigan hands Florida its first season-opening loss since 1989

The message for all those young Michigan players was clear in the letter from a 13-year combat veteran that coach Jim Harbaugh read to them the night before the first game.

"Just to hear that letter and say, OK, there's 18- and 19-year-old guys going over there defending our freedom, why can't we step out onto the field ... and play a simple game of football?" quarterback Wilton Speight said after the 11th-ranked Wolverines beat No. 17 Florida 33-17 on Saturday.

Maryland upsets No. 23 Texas to spoil coach Tom Herman's debut

With a new head coach and the promise that the program is already on the rebound with its $10 million locker room, big wins in recruiting for the future and some good-looking talent for the present, all eyes were on Texas and Tom Herman.

Then Maryland spoiled the Longhorns' unveiling -- in emphatic fashion.

Tyrrell Pigrome passed for two touchdowns and ran for another before leaving with an injury and Maryland stunned No. 23 Texas 51-41 Saturday. Even after Pigrome had to be helped off late in the third quarter after twisting his knee, freshman Kasim Hill came in and led two crucial fourth-quarter touchdown drives that put the game out of reach.

Barkley scores twice, No. 4 Penn State tops Pitt 33-14

James Franklin kept trying to downplay the importance of Penn State's meeting with Pittsburgh. The most important game in the universe to be sure, the coach said in the run-up to the 98th meeting between the two schools just 140 miles apart. But only because it was the only one his team had this week.

Funny, Franklin's players didn't quite see it the same way.

A year after a loss to the Panthers ended up playing a role in keeping them out of the College Football Playoff, the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions exacted a bit of revenge with a 33-14 victory on Saturday that looked more lopsided on the scoreboard than it appeared at times on the field.

Taylor breaks out, No. 9 Wisconsin beats Fla. Atlantic 31-14

The mistakes that bogged down the ninth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers at times in an otherwise convincing win over Florida Atlantic can be put into perspective when accounting for the worries that their opponent face back home.

The Badgers won 31-14 on Saturday thanks in part to 223 yards and three touchdowns from freshman running back Jonathan Taylor, and an especially staunch defensive effort in the second half.

No. 8 Michigan looks sluggish in 36-14 win over Cincinnati

Jim Harbaugh's emotions are hardened from experiencing it all as a college star, NFL quarterback and coach before coming back to campus to lead Michigan.

"I'm dead in here," he said, gesturing toward his stomach. "I'm burnt wood."

The young Wolverines (2-0) are far from savvy, leading to a relative letdown against Cincinnati after opening the season with an impressive victory over then-No. 17 Florida.

Ty Isaac ran for a career-high 133 yards and Wilton Speight threw for two touchdowns to help No. 8 Michigan overcome a sluggish performance to pull away and beat the Bearcats 36-14 on Saturday.

The amazing transformation of Penn State's Trace McSorley

There are a few octaves that separate everyday Trace McSorley from the entertainingly bold frontman for one of college football's most exciting offenses. The onstage Saturday McSorley has a different voice, infused with enough extra bass that his closest friends in State College did a double take the first time he led Penn State out of the locker room as its starting quarterback.

Billy Fessler, McSorley's roommate, has probably had a conversation with his fellow quarterback darn near every day since the two arrived on campus in 2014. A year ago, listening to his typically soft-spoken buddy rally the troops before the season opener against Kent State, Fessler's reaction was simple

McSorley leads No. 5 Penn State in rout of Georgia State

All week, the usually unflappable Trace McSorley told himself, if he could settle his feet down, his arm would follow suit.

A week after Penn State's quarterback played his most uneven game in a while, bouncing on his toes and firing over his teammates heads, he had one of his best under Beaver Stadium's bright lights.

McSorley threw a stadium-record 85-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley for one of his four scoring strikes and also ran for a touchdown in No. 5 Penn State's 56-0 victory over Georgia State 56-0 on Saturday night.

No. 8 Ohio State bounces back with 38-7 rout of Army

Ohio State desperately needed some positive vibes after a deflating, demoralizing loss to Oklahoma at home a week ago. Overmatched Army was able to help out on Saturday.

True freshman J.K. Dobbins ran for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns as No. 8 Ohio State rebounded to rout the visitors from West Point 38-7. J.T. Barrett, the target this week of critics who suggested he should be benched after the 31-16 loss to Oklahoma, was 25 for 33 for 270 yards and two touchdowns, albeit against a much less-talented defense.

No. 4 Penn State beats Iowa 21-19 with TD on final play

It was happening like it had so often in the past.

A once-sluggish Iowa team had come to life in the fourth quarter at home under the lights, and another top-five opponent was set to go down.

Trace McSorley, Juwan Johnson and the resilient Nittany Lions flipped the script, scoring on the game's final play to survive a wild Big Ten opener.

Johnson caught a seven-yard TD pass as time expired and fourth-ranked Penn State rallied to stun Iowa 21-19 Saturday night.

O'Korn, defense help No. 8 Michigan rally past Purdue, 28-10

No. 8 Michigan lost its starting quarterback. Backup John O'Korn and a rock-solid defense made sure the bigger goals stayed intact.

O'Korn led the offense on two time-consuming drives in the second half, Chris Evans ran for two touchdowns and the Wolverines scored the final 21 points in a 28-10 win at Purdue on Saturday.
