INDIANAPOLIS – IndyCar racing is returning to Portland International Raceway in 2018.

IThe PIR venue replaces New York's Watkins Glen International in the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Serieschampionship, a source familiar with the schedule has told IndyStar.

The City of Portland has scheduled an 11 a.m. announcement in conjunction with what it called 'event organizers.'

The Glen has struggled to draw big crowds on Labor Day weekend the past two years.

Watkins Glen International president Michael Printup told Racer magazine recently, “We've had two good races but it's been an uphill climb trying to make it work. I don't think the dates help us any because July 4 and Labor Day don't seem to be good. I asked IndyCar about changing dates, but there weren't any available."

IndyCar plans to announce its complete 2018 calendar this afternoon.

Watkins Glen, which returned to the series in 2016 after a six-year hiatus, took the place of a planned Boston street course race that never materialized. Scott Dixon won at The Glen in its 2016 return, while Alexander Rossi won the race there this past season.

Indy cars last raced at Portland in 2007 as part of the Champ Car Series. Before that, CART hosted races in Portland from 1984 to 2003 before CART before Champ Car took over from 2005-2007. Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais is the only current IndyCar driver who has won an Indy car race at Portland.

Instead of Indy cars the drivers will be racing food carts.

That's not athleticism... That's stamina and durability...

I would consider race car drivers more of an "athlete" than golfers and equivalent to most extreme sports, swimmers, etc. I'd almost consider it on par with baseball players. Handling a car/fighting the steering wheel and pedals at 150-200+ MPH for 3+ hours is no joke.

We will have to disagree completely about this. The ability to stay focused and perform under hot conditions for long times with your BPM of up to 200 is an athletic ability.

Just to give you an idea about the training regiment for top-level F1 drivers look at things like:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/motor-racing/fernando-alonso-blood-sweatand-gears-2318965.html

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/6980337.stm

Jason Button (A former F1 champion driver) for example completed a triathlon in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 43 seconds. This was an Olympic distance event consisting of a 1,500m swim, a 42km bike ride and a 10km run to the finish. To finish in this time considering the Olympic record is 1:48:24

These guys are top level athletes. People that have not experienced it think they just sit and drive. It is an awful lot harder to do than that. In the Malasia GP a driver will usually lose 3 liters of fluids during the race.

That's a mental ability. What kind of nerd are you? Any D&D Dungeon master would know there's a Wisdom and Constitution roll you'd need for that.

Hopefully we are not out of town for this. Always enjoyed the Indy 500 growing up and will have a great time at this with my son.

Curious where you draw the line. As previously mentioned, driving is a much more strenuous activity than golfing. So, I can only assume you do not consider golfers to be athletes. Where is your break off point for athletes and non-athletes?

Did you race here in Portland? I raced here locally many years ago and still support my brother and now his son at the Oregon, Washington tracks. This weekend is the 8 hour endurance event at P.I.R. One of my favorites.

I did - but last time I ran PIR was probably in 2009 with occasional event up to 2011. Started racing a Miata in the 90s, ran a super-7 most of the 2000s and a couple of races in the end before we moved to California with a vintage GTV. I used to do a lot of rallycross events in Hillsboro, Eugene and around Washington. These were my favorite events - but again, have not raced in Portland since 2011 or so.

I ran in the old RX7 challenge class 17 years ago. I quit when my youngest was 1 to raise a family. Kept the car though. Looking to get back in the endurance races in a year or two. The Miata class is crazy!

I never ran the Miata in a spec-Miata which is crazy (I love watching them). I believe it was ITB when I ran it last (a long time ago) and I think we had some RX7s at the class at the time. I know what you mean not racing when you have kids. They sure take a lot of time. Unfortunately, my kids never cared about racing - so no father/kid efforts for me.

Unfortunately, I now live more than 2 hours away from the nearest track. I still keep my old GTV race car. Maybe when my kids leave to college in 7 years I will get a trailer and go back to race vintage.

Actually no. None of you here could. Freestyling is not easy. Not sure why you think it is. I'm not even that good at it. But give me a little time to write...

People that are doing athletic things? :dunno: This is an age old argument.

Golf no. Racing? Pushing it IMO.

Don't you think reaction time is athletic? That is a big part of racing.
