Rick Pitino's reputation -- and future -- are again in question

During his time with Louisville, the Cardinals basketball coach Rick Pitino has survived multiple scandals.

In 2010, he testified in a federal extortion trial involving Karen Sypher, who went to prison after trying to get money and gifts from Pitino in exchange for silence.

In 2015, the NCAA launched an investigation into a sex-for-pay scandal organized by former Louisville assistant coach Andre McGee that could force the Cardinals to vacate their 2013 national title and dozens of victories. For that, Pitino will serve a seven-game suspension this season. This all came after the school, hoping to soothe the NCAA and temper the sanctions, self-imposed a 2016 NCAA tournament ban.

Bagley, Allen lead No. 1 Duke past Elon, 97-68

Grayson Allen put on a show in his final season opener for No. 1 Duke. So did Marvin Bagley in his first -- and perhaps only -- one.

Bagley had 25 points and 10 rebounds in his college debut, and Duke opened another season of high expectations by routing Elon 97-68 on Friday night, moving Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski one victory from yet another career milestone.

Maye helps No. 9 UNC beat Northern Iowa 86-69 in opener

Luke Maye knocked down outside jumpers, hit the glass and scored inside -- even throwing in a nifty spin move on a post bucket -- for the best scoring performance of his career.

Ninth-ranked North Carolina needs this version of Maye, too.

The 6-foot-8 junior had 26 points and 10 rebounds to help the Tar Heels beat Northern Iowa 86-69 in Friday night's season opener, a fast start for a one-time reserve now thrust into a leading role for the reigning national champions.

    Brown's triple-double helps Miami beat Gardner-Webb 77-45

Lonnie Walker IV's college career was less than two minutes old when Bruce Brown spotted him under the basket and hit him with lob for a crowd-pleasing score.

That alley-oop dunk was just the start.

"We're probably going to have a lot more of them," Brown said.

"A lot more," Walker agreed. "A lot more."

The two underclassmen believe this will be a special season for the No. 13-ranked Miami Hurricanes , and it began Friday with a 77-45 win over Gardner-Webb.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski becomes first to win 1,000 games at single school

Make it another 1K for Coach K -- with all of these coming at Duke.

Mike Krzyzewski became the first men's Division I coach to win 1,000 games at one school Saturday night when his top-ranked Blue Devils beat Utah Valley 99-69 behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from freshman Marvin Bagley III.

No. 16 Louisville rallies past George Mason 72-61

Louisville's need for a lift against George Mason led Darius Perry and Jordan Nwora to put aside freshman nerves and contribute.

The duo responded with poise and clutch baskets that rallied the No. 16 Cardinals as they started a new phase without longtime coach Rick Pitino.

Deng Adel had 20 points, while Perry and Nwora combined for 22 in the second half to lead Louisville past George Mason 72-61 on Sunday and win David Padgett's debut as the Cardinals' interim coach.

Vasiljevic leads No. 12 Miami to 89-55 victory over Navy

With Bruce Brown struggling, D.J. Vasilvejic picked up the offensive slack for Miami.

Vasilvejic scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as the No. 12 Hurricanes beat Navy 89-55 on Sunday.

Walker hurt as No. 11 Hurricanes beat Florida A&M 90-59

Highly touted freshman Lonnie Walker IVtwisted his left ankle Thursday night, and coach Jim Larranaga was sore himself after the latest lopsided win by the 11th-ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Larranaga said Walker wasn't seriously hurt, and the coach seemed more concerned about his team's effort and focus in a 90-59 victory over Florida A&M.

No. 18 Louisville hangs on over Omaha 87-78

With his team leading Omaha by 15 points at halftime Friday night, Louisville interim coach David Padgett warned the 18th-ranked Cardinals that they better not relax in the second half or the high-scoring Mavericks would catch them.

Louisville didn't fully heed the coach's words in seeing a 20-point second-half lead slip to single digits. Thankfully, a career scoring night from Ray Spalding, another strong offensive game from Deng Adel and a whole bunch of blocked shots by the Cardinals proved enough for an 87-78 victory.

Berry scores 29 points as No. 9 UNC beats Stanford 96-72

Joel Berry II had no intentions of repeating his poor shooting performance from the last game.

He showed up at Maples Pavilion more than a half-hour before his teammates for Monday's shootaround, putting up some 200 extra shots from all over the floor -- and it worked wonderfully.

Berry scored 29 points, Kenny Williams posted career highs with 20 points and six 3-pointers, and No. 9 North Carolina beat Stanford 96-72 on Monday night in a matchup of Roy Williams against his former player-turned coach, Jerod Haase.
