Portland is dead last in the league in assists (per Jay Allen on the 5th Quarter show).

Has Jason Quick or any of the other media members ask the players about this??? Does McLillard realize this is the main reason for the terrible play... dead last?! WTF is wrong with these guys... what a waste of talent

As soon as Quick asks that question, people will rail on him for stirring things up and being devisive.... even though it is a totally legitimate question.

The Blazers' 3rd, 4th, & 5th highest paid players combined for 8 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists in 33 minutes. They're owed a collective $105 million over the next 3 seasons.

Dude, you're fucking ridiculous. When youre passing to Moe Harkless, Noah Vonleh, ISO Evan Turnover, etc. Lillards actually improved his assists in spite of our increased incompetence from our role players.

People that blame Lillard and McCollum for their shitty teammates are ridiculous.

...while I totally agree, it must be said that McCollum rarely looks to pass (remember how much better of a facilitator the 15-16 version of CJ was?)

    It's the roster.

I'm not positive, but I think that, to get an assist, the player you pass it to must make a basket. :dunno:

Very true, but a good PG can do things to get his players better looks and be set up in better position for something that takes advantage of their strengths. How many times have I seen Dame on the PnR get the ball to Nurkic too early where he has to put the ball on the floor instead of being able to just go up strong?

How many times have I seen Dame/CJ completely miss a wide-open player right at the rim that would help get them going and get some rhythm to make other shots? All of these players can play. They may not be great ISO players but few are. They may not be great shooters but there aren't really that many of those either.

Harkless, Aminu, Vonleh all have length and good to great hops yet even with all the attention paid to Dame/CJ, how often do I see them getting passes at the rim? The other team's big is often out hedging against Dame with Nurk in a PnR so it's not like there is some giant just planted under the rim. Yet game after game I see missed opportunities right at the rim where players don't even get a chance.

And don't start with Dame/CJ and how little they run to get fast breaks/easy baskets that would also help players with less ISO ability get in a flow and rhythm.

The roster certainly has holes but so does just about every roster in the league. I just don't think they are taking advantage of many of the opportunities they do have to take advantage of the strengths some of their players do have.

On many nights, it seems like they go out of their way to make it more difficult on themselves. It's almost like they think the judges will give them a higher score due to the degree of difficulty.

I wish you'd stop combining Dame/CJ. Dame actually finds his teammates. Whether it's underneath, or on a kickout, or post entries, etc. And his P&R timing is perfection-- it's not his fault Nurk can't finish at the hoop with his weak ass one legged floaters (that's on HIM, not Dame). He has times when he feels compelled to take over and his shot selection reverts to shit, but for the most part, he's always aware of where everybody is and does his best to find them. He had like 8 assists last night when everyone was so cold-- that's no easy task.

CJ, on the other hand, is a freaking ballhog. It looks good when he's got it going, but when he's 2/12 and takes 15 dribbles to take a fadeaway over 2 guys from 20 feet, all you can do is shake your head. He has a one track mind, and constantly misses cutters/open teammates. And he is absolutely terrible at finishing around the rim. Dude needs to learn how to draw contact and get to the line, because he's not effective at all when his shot is cold.

To me, this seems to be coaching, or lack of. They need to focus on fundamentals of passing.
Again last night had a turnover margin of minus eight, and as you mention it also leads to poor execution.

I've been saying this since like game 5. We can't change our personnel that easily. Forcing this team to play in the half court with maybe 3 decent offensive players is murder.

You have to get out and run. Push the pace, increase possessions, and you'll see more assists. It will come at the expense of our conservative defense, but there are at least 7-9 guys on the roster who would be so much more effective if we got out and ran. And these are the same guys who will be more useful on the other end of the court when they're engaged offensively. We are just so bland and stale right now.

I agree Dame is much better than CJ, but there are still many opportunities he misses. CJ just misses even way more.

As for "perfection" in his P&R timing, we will just have to respectfully disagree. It is good to very good some times and other times, much too early or completely missed. But I completely agree that CJ is much worse. So perhaps I should delineate a bit more. But it's not like Dame is devoid of any improvement in that area.

Dame had 30 points 9 assists and 8 rebounds last night. I don't think Dame is the problem.

    Complete ugliness.

    • Blazers out-rebounded on the offensive glass 11-7
    • Blazers outscored on the break 16-0
    • Portland had 18 assists.....but 19 turnovers

That fast break statistic is brutal. DEAD LAST in the NBA in fast break points and it's not close. They would have to increase their rate by 50% just to catch the next team in front of them, the Knicks.
The assists aren't much better. DEAD LAST and 10% behind the 2nd to last team, the Phoenix Suns.

This isn't just below average, it is downright abysmal.

Bro, Nurk's ass needs to fucking ROLL. He doesn't roll all the way to the basket. Dame hits him when he's open all the time. If he rolled all the way there would be more easy looks.

Are Dame and CJ’s assists per game lower than in the past. I never look at the numbers, but they seem the same to me. What I never see is ANYBODY else pass besides Nurk. Just what I remember from watching.

No one else passes much. They just immediately do a hand off to Dame or CJ.
