As a timbers fan, this sucks. As a USMNT fan, this is good. I'd rather he go abroad, but at least in ATL he's getting top notch coaching that'll hopefully get him to the next level. He spent way too long under Porter.

Plus, it sounds like the timbers are getting a good price. I can never keep all the funny money salary cap straight. General allocation, targeted allocation, other compensation, DP, international slots. MLS is so unnecessarily complicated

He asked for a huge raise supposedly.

I may have learned a great deal about the game of soccer since converting from a soccer hater, but I'm light years away from understanding offseason stuff. I know Nagbe requested a huge raise. Double of what he's making now. If I remember correctly he asked for 1Mil and he's currently making somewhere in the 500K range.

Wants WAY too much money for the roles he fills on the Timbers. Hell, we can't even justify paying Ridgy that much to not train and drink beer most of the season! Think the Timbers are going to use the new TAM rules to bring in somebody else anyway. Wish him the best of luck though. Helped bring us a championship.

I think he deserves the money he's asking for. He and Valeri just dominate possession against other teams. He's a terrific player imo.

According to an ESPN article I read yesterday, some of that is incentives based for things like nagbe winning the MVP, getting 12 or more goals, etc, so not all that likely.

It's going to be weird watching the timbers next year

I don't understand why we couldn't have just said no to his request for a pay raise and kept him. Do players in MLS actually hold out for stuff like that? It's not like he's been making so much money over the years that he could get away with doing so. Confused.

That is the most an MLS player has ever been transferred to another MLS club for. I would still rather keep him though. I think it was a mistake.

Does that transfer money increase our cap space or something? Why does it matter that the transfer money was so high? Does it just go back into the clubs bank account?

Short answer is yes, the cap space goes up. I'll let someone else explain the details. Other than generalities, I have no clue how the MLS salary cap works.

I've lost track of the nuances of MLS transfer rules, but the short answer is yes the Timbers have more money to use on player salaries above the salary cap after this trade. I would google the difference between "General Allocation Money" and "Targeted Allocation Money" in MLS to understand more.

Here's an article on the Timbers site today: https://www.timbers.com/post/2017/1...geted-allocation-money-works-and-how-they-can
