No. 21 Rhode Island beats Brown 79-72

After coasting through its first two games, No. 21 Rhode Island finally played a team that wasn't out of contention by halftime.

Jared Terrell scored 18 points and E.C. Matthews added 17 as the Rams staved off upset-minded Brown on Wednesday night in Round Two of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off.

"This is the first time we got challenged since we've been on the court," Rams coach Dan Hurley said. "It's the first time we were in something tight where we had to make some plays.

"Some mind-boggling things went on. We got out-hustled. I think we were a little full of ourselves today and this was the perfect opponent for us to get upset. Can this be a positive for us? Yes."

No. 23 Rhode Island beats Belmont 82-73

Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley felt the key to defeating Belmont was to limit the Bruins' proficiency from beyond the 3-point arc.

The 23rd-ranked Rams held the Bruins to 18.5 percent shooting (5 of 27) from 3-point range and posted an 82-73 victory Friday night.

No. 24 Rhode Island cruises to 78-58 win at Fordham

Rhode Island won't be satisfied just to make it back to the NCAA Tournament this year. Riding the school's longest winning streak in seven decades, the Rams are intent on making a deep run in March.

Andre Berry scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, Jared Terrell had 17 points and six assists, and No. 24 Rhode Island cruised past Fordham 78-58 on Wednesday night at historic Rose Hill Gym.

Robinson's 3 lifts No. 24 Rhode Island over Duquesne, 61-58

Stanford Robinson plays pretty good defense. But know this: He can also hit the big shot.

He did just that Saturday, a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give No. 24 Rhode Island a 61-58 victory over Duquesne. The Rams (17-3, 9-0) have won 12 in a row and 17 straight against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents.

UMass botches missed free throw, No. 22 Rhode Island escapes

Rhode Island has mostly cruised to a string of big victories over the past six weeks. For the second time in two games, though, the Rams had to sweat out late drama to keep their winning streak going.

Jeff Dowtin had 19 points and 10 assists, and No. 22 Rhode Island escaped with an 85-83 win over Massachusetts on Tuesday night after the Minutemen botched an intentional missed free throw in the final seconds.

Rhode Island beats Davidson 72-59 for 15th straight win

Cyril Langevine came off the bench with Rhode Island leading by five points, and soon the advantage was down to one.

All he did over the next nine minutes was score 10 points and grab four rebounds while helping the 18th-ranked Rams open a 16-point lead.

"We're not a team, we're a program," coach Dan Hurley said on Friday night after Rhode Island beat Davidson 72-59 to match a school record with its 15th win in a row. "We've got a real deep team. You can go on winning streaks and have seasons like this when you have different guys step up each night."

No. 16 URI streak reaches 16 with 85-67 win over Richmond

Rhode Island kept its winning streak going on Tuesday night. And it hopes it avoided a major injury to one of its key players in the process.

Jared Terrell had 17 points and the 16th-ranked Rams extended their winning streak to 16 games with an 85-67 victory over Richmond.

St. Bonaventure upsets No. 16 Rhode Island with 77-74 win

Standing alone with the ball under the basket, St. Bonaventure forward LaDarien Griffin had only one thought come to mind.

"Don't miss," Griffin said of his dunk with 21.5 seconds remaining that provided the go-ahead points in the Bonnies 77-74 win over Rhode Island, and snapped the 16th-ranked Rams' 16-game winning streak on Friday night.

No. 18 Rhode Island wins first outright Atlantic-10 title

At the end of the celebration, Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley was the last one to cut down the net at the basket in front of his team's bench.

He climbed up a ladder, snipped the final strings and put it around his neck to the roars of the crowd, a small symbol for a program that has finally reached the top of the Atlantic-10's regular season.

Jeff Dowtin scored 20 points, E.C. Matthews added 18 and No. 18 Rhode Island wrapped up its first outright A-10 regular-season title with an 81-56 victory over Dayton on Friday night.

Davidson upends No. 17 Rhode Island 63-61

Rhode Island gambled, and Davidson point guard Jon Axel Gudmundsson made the 17th-ranked Rams pay for it.

When Rhode Island's Jared Terrell went for a steal near midcourt on an inbounds play, Gudmundsson took advantage of the sudden 5-on-4 situation, scoring on a driving layup on the right side of the rim while drawing a foul with 3.1 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 63-61 upset over Rhode Island on Friday night.

No. 25 Rhode Island holds off VCU in A-10 quarterfinals

No. 25 Rhode Island's Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament opener provided a new test for a team that largely dominated its league: a chance to bounce back from a losing streak.

The top-seeded Rams met the challenge, fending off VCU 76-67 in the quarterfinals Friday as it began its tournament defense.

No. 25 Rhode Island rallies vs. Saint Joseph's in A10 semis

No. 25 Rhode Island needed a second-half rally to finish off Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinals Saturday. Now, the Rams are one step closer to repeating their Selection Sunday itinerary from a year ago.

The defending champion Rams (25-6) advanced to the conference title game with a 90-87 victory behind Andre Berry's 18 points and Fatts Russell's two crucial 3-pointers in the final six minutes.

Davidson going dancing after beating Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 final

Bubble teams across the land were keeping an eye on the Atlantic 10 tournament final, and Davidson, a school still waiting for its first victory in the NCAA tournament since Stephen Curry, was leading the way.

The Wildcats were all too happy to disappoint those folks whose hopes hinged on their result Sunday.

Freshman Kellan Grady's go-ahead baseline floater with 74 seconds left ended a nearly 13-minute drought without a field goal for Davidson and lifted Curry's alma mater to a 58-57 victory over No. 25 Rhode Islandfor the A-10 title.

Bonnies stun UCLA 65-58 for 1st NCAA Tourney win in 48 years

The basketball was still high in the air -- flung to start the celebration -- when the buzzer sounded and the Bonnies' long-awaited March celebration commenced. Players chest-bumped on court. Coach Mark Schmidt jumped and waved his arms.

The crowd at the University of Dayton Arena -- a place where St. Bonaventure is usually booed -- got caught up in the moment, too. And why not? It had been 48 years since anyone saw something like this out of St. Bonaventure.

Courtney Stockard returned from a hamstring injury and scored 26 points, and Jaylen Adams hit a jumper and three free throws in the final minute Tuesday night, rallying the Bonnies to a 65-58 victory over UCLA and their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1970.
