No. 21 Houston routs UCF in AAC Tournament quarterfinal

Houston was determined not to repeat its recent failures in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Cougars used a dominant performance against UCF to erase the sting of two consecutive first-round losses.

Galen Robinson scored 18 points, Rob Gray had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds, and No. 21 Houston beat UCF 84-56 on Friday night.

No. 21 Houston tops Wichita State, advances to AAC final

Senior guard Rob Gray never liked the idea of waiting for the selection committee to put his No. 21 Houston Cougarsinto the NCAA Tournament.

Gray wanted to get there by winning the American Athletic Conference Tournament and gaining an automatic bid, an opportunity he will have Sunday when Houston plays in the championship game against No. 8 Cincinnati.

He scored 33 points to lead the Cougars to a 77-74 victory over No. 11 Wichita State in the semifinal round Saturday.

No. 8 Cincinnati rallies past Memphis 70-60 in AAC semis

For the second straight day, the No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats struggled but survived in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

Coach Mick Cronin hopes that with the NCAA Tournament just a few days away, his players have learned their lesson.

"Hopefully, we learned a lesson that the other team -- no matter their record or their situation -- is coming to win," Cronin said after the top-seeded Bearcats rallied to beat Memphis 70-60 on Saturday and advance to their second straight AAC Tournament final. "I think we were in shock that (Memphis) actually came out with confidence and wasn't afraid of us.

Defense lifts No. 8 Cincinnati over Houston in AAC final

Mick Cronin doesn't have a catchy sales pitch for the stingy brand of basketball No. 8 Cincinnati played to claw its way to the top of the American Athletic Conference.

Stellar defense was a big part of the team's drive to the league's regular-season championship. It also served the top-seeded Bearcats well while they were winning three games in three days to capture the American's conference tournament title.

Now they'll see how far it can carry them in the NCAA Tournament.

"I can sit here and tell you about the culture and try to sell you on everything that we build at Cincinnati," Cronin said after Sunday's 56-55 victory over No. 21 Houston in the AAC final.

Houston holds off San Diego State 67-65 in West Region

So many thoughts were running through Rob Gray's head as he dribbled near midcourt, time winding down in a tied NCAA Tournament game, that Houston's star guard nearly ran out of time.

"I was thinking to myself, I'm a senior, I've never been in March Madness. This is what I live for," Gray said later. "A small thought ran through my head: I thought about Cincinnati, how I had a chance to win that game for us and I didn't, and I just wanted to come through for us."

Finally deciding it was time to go, Gray drove for a wind-milling layup that trickled over the rim with 1.1 seconds left. And when San Diego State's Trey Kell missed a tough 3-pointer at the buzzer, the No. 6 seed Cougars had a heart-stopping 67-65 first-round win Thursday night.

Cumberland leads Cincinnati over pesky Georgia State 68-53

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin likes using boxing references to describe his team's hard-nosed style.

The Bearcats waited until the final few rounds to deliver a knockout punch Friday.

Jarron Cumberland set career highs with 27 points and 11 rebounds as Cincinnati recovered after blowing a 10-point lead in the second half to beat pesky Georgia State 68-53 in the NCAA Tournament.

Connecticut upsets No. 15 Syracuse behind Adams and Gilbert

Nothing less than the first major test Dan Hurley Era awaited the Connecticut Huskies.

UConn was facing a Top 25 opponent in a nationally televised game in one of basketball's iconic venues.

For a group that has not been together for a full calendar year, it was fair to question how they would respond. Consider the test passed. With flying colors.

"They had a look the last couple days that they couldn't get here and play. They went out and performed at such a high level," Hurley said after Connecticut's 83-76 upset of No. 15 Syracuse in the first game of the 2K Classic Thursday night.

Robinson, Brooks rally No. 24 Houston past LSU, 82-76

Galen Robinson Jr. heard the "LSU! LSU!" chants with Houston down 15 points in the second half.

"It really touched a nerve, so I was like, `There's no way I'm quitting, no way we are losing this game." Robinson said. "That's the mindset that I had."

Robinson scored 18 points, Armoni Brooks added 13 -- all in the second half -- and No. 24 Houston overcame the big deficit to beat LSU 82-76 on Wednesday night.

Brady scores 13, No. 21 Houston holds out USF 69-60

Kelvin Sampson struggled to find appropriate words to describe a truly ugly game.

There were 32 turnovers, 62 fouls, 76 free throws attempted, 32 percent shooting by one team and slightly over 40 percent for the other.

"Not aesthetically pleasing," Sampson said after No. 21 Houston held off South Florida 69-60 on Saturday night. "I felt bad that people had to watch that."
