No. 8 Wichita State tops No. 16 Baylor 69-62 with big finish

One of the most difficult things to do when playing a zone defense is identifying shooters on the perimeter.

No. 8 Wichita State used outside shooting to exploit No. 16 Baylor's zone in a big way on Saturday, ending the Bears' 46-game nonconference home winning streak.

Conner Frankamp scored 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 2:50 to go that sparked a game-ending 7-0 run in the Shockers' 69-62 win.

No. 6 Wichita State rallies past South Dakota State, 95-85

Gregg Marshall was willing to divulge some of the halftime adjustments he made that enabled No. 6 Wichita State to rally past pesky South Dakota State on Tuesday night.

He just wasn't going to replicate the R-rated delivery.

The Shockers began switching ball screens that frustrated them the first 20 minutes, and a full-court press got the Jackrabbits out of sorts. And after slowly digging from a 13-point second-half hole, the Shockers escaped with a 95-85 victory over the Summit League favorites.

Shamet scores 30; No. 6 Wichita St. tops Oklahoma St. 78-66

Wichita State's Landry Shamet did it all, and his Shockers needed every bit of it to hold off a spirited upset bid from Oklahoma State.

The sophomore guard scored a career-high 30 points, and the sixth-ranked Shockers defeated the Cowboys 78-66 on Saturday.

No. 11 Wichita State beats Arkansas State 89-80

As No. 11 Wichita State went to the locker room for halftime Tuesday night, there were some dumbfounded looks. The Shockers had just allowed at least 50 first-half points for the third straight home game and trailed Arkansas State.

Senior guard Zach Brown was fed up.

"Zach asked `Do we want to be known as the best offensive team in Wichita State history or the worst defensive team in Wichita State history?," Shockers guard Landry Shamet said. "It means a lot to our guys to be better than that."

The Shockers finally were, using Samajae Haynes-Jones' 27 points to outlast Arkansas State 89-80.

No. 11 Wichita State rallies for win over Florida Gulf Coast

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall used 12 players in the first half of Friday night's game against Florida Gulf Coast, hoping his 11th-ranked Shockers could spread out the minutes and still win handily.

Not only did that not happen, Marshall realized star Landry Shametwas not going to see the bench much after halftime.

Shamet scored a game-high 23 points in 33 minutes to lift Wichita State past Florida Gulf Coast 75-65.

Prayer answered again: Loyola tops Tennessee on late jumper

Loyola-Chicago's Sweet 16 dreams bounced on the front of the rim, lightly touched the backboard, and rattled a couple times before slipping through the net.

Another prayer answered in the waning seconds, and now Sister Jean's Ramblers are heading to Atlanta.

Clayton Custer's jumper got that friendly bounce with 3.6 seconds left, and 11th-seeded Loyola beat Tennessee 63-62 in a South Region second-round game Saturday night.

Loyola beats Nevada 69-68, continues improbable NCAA run

With Loyola-Chicago's captivating NCAA tournament run hanging in the balance, it was Marques Townes' turn to deliver another memorable finish.

Townes had scored only a combined 15 points in Loyola's first two NCAA tournament games, but that didn't concern Ramblers coach Porter Moser. Townes had the ball in front of the Loyola bench in the final seconds Thursday night and the shot clock about to expire.

With Loyola clinging to a one-point lead and only 6.3 seconds remaining, Townes nailed the decisive 3-pointer to help clinch a 69-68 win over Nevada in the NCAA South Regional semifinal.

Final Four bound: No. 11 Loyola beats Kansas State 78-62

Porter Moser stood in front of the scarf-clad Loyola cheering section, a bit dazed but beaming from ear to ear.

"Are you kidding me! Are you kidding me!" the Ramblers coach screamed over and over.

    No kidding.

Loyola is headed to the Final Four .

An improbable NCAA Tournament took its craziest turn yet Saturday night, when Ben Richardson scored a career-high 23 points and the 11th-seeded Ramblers romped to a 78-62 victory over Kansas State to cap off a stunning run through the bracket-busting South Regional.

Van Vleet scored 12 points as the Shockers (30-8) followed up last week’s win over top-ranked Gonzaga with a nail-biting victory over the second-seeded Buckeyes (29-8), whose 11-game winning streak ended one short of their second straight Final Four. Wichita State’s 20-point lead in the second half dwindled to three in the final minutes, but several Shockers stepped up with big plays to stop the surge, heeding coach Gregg Marshall’s halftime command to “play angry.”

Evansville stuns No. 1 Kentucky at Rupp Arena, 67-64

Evansville showed no fear either of Kentucky or venerable Rupp Arena, where the Wildcats had been perfect at ruining visitors' dreams of pulling off the seemingly impossible.

    Until Tuesday night.

Not only did the Purple Aces deal No. 1 Kentucky a stunning 67-64 upset, they beat the bigger, stronger Wildcats at their own game. When it was over, players, coaches and their fans whooped it up in a corner of the famed court, making sure they savored every bit of a momentous victory.

No. 8 Seed Loyola Holds Off No. 9 Seed Georgia Tech, 71-60

Georgia Tech tips off with Loyola Chicago at the start of a college basketball game in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, Friday, March 19, 2021

Loyola Chicago might be the only team that feels as though little has changed about the NCAA Tournament.

Probably has something to do with all the winning the Ramblers do.

The surprise semifinalist in 2018, Loyola was relegated to the NIT the next year and missed out on the tournament entirely — along with everyone else — when it was canceled due to COVID-19 last season. But with key pieces of their Final Four team leading the way, the eighth-seeded Ramblers marked a triumphant return to college basketball's biggest stage Friday with a 71-60 victory over No. 9 seed Georgia Tech at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
