I suggest healthy discussion prior. I'm really on the fence. My buddy kinda talked me off the Terry Stotts ledge. He had some good points.
Yes there could be more cutting to the rim. But until they're are actually players on the roster who can consistently hit a 3... Then teams will continue to load up on Lillard & CJ. That's not on Stotts, that's on NO. This year Portland had 3 players average more than 10ppg. That's as much of a problem as Portland's defense pre-Nurk trade. No, hitting a 3 consistently doesn't mean a player goes on a few week stretch where he can't miss. Only to follow that up with a few week stretch where he shoots worse than a 3rd grader from three.
I prefer a Coach who likes more Ball movement at a high pace and sharing the Ball involve ALL PLAYERS instead of ISO Basketball
I prefer a coach who doesn't sit one of the best rim protectors in the league just to match the opposition... More Nurk. More cutting to the rim. More running the offense through Nurk (like Nurk's first season in Portland). More sharing the ball. More fast breaks. Less Pat Connaughton. Less Aminu as the starting 4. More Zach Collins starting at the 4. More Wade Baldwin. More Nurk. Less 3s. Less Iso. No Stotts. More Budenholzer.
I think in order to take the next step, ball movement has to improve. That being said, the roster is flawed, and Stotts has done wonders with it. I suppose I vote out, but not with fire and a pitchfork
Is that all on Stotts? 2013-14 they finished 9th in the league, and ‘14-15 finished 12th running a lot of the same plays. Batam, Wes, RoLo, etc. . . . nobody averaged more than 6 assist, but still finished in top 1/3 of the league. If there was a point forward type on the wing now like that version of Batam, where do you think they’d rank? Aminu, Harkless, & Pat aren’t playmakers. Turner could be if anyone respected his perimeter shooting. You need playmakers that can beat their man and find open shooters or guys cutting to the basket when the defense is rotating. Suggesting more movement and off ball screens is great, but you still need playmakers.
I'd keep him unless we have legit basketball genius lined up. If we are sure we have the next great NBA coach in line then we should hire him. Otherwise I don't see any reason to go away from Stotts. I'd focus on getting him a better player at the wing.
Yes, clarification please. I think he will stay the coach just because he has not been fired yet. I think they would have fired him by now if they were going to. As far as my personal feelings, I'm on the fence still. I like Terry, but the end of this season was such a disappointment and it seemed he had no way to counter the same game plan by the Pelicans 4 straight games. That should not be able to happen. I am fine with it if he is fired, but only if we bring in a true upgrade.
I agree, unless there is this superior coach that is willing to come then Stotts is a pretty good coach already. The end of the season was disappointing but that was a collective effort not just a coach or a player.
How can anyone be sure though? That's what taking chances for improvement is all about. Nothing is for sure in this world except taxes and death. Does that mean we all keep doing the same things forever, because a change isn't for sure to be better?
But there have been many changes to the team over the years. Sometimes it's nice to have some stability. On the flip side, you don't always know what you have until it's gone and then regrets set in. I don't see making a coaching change a necessity at this stage as often times it takes 2 or 3 changes afterwards to get back to where you are at. Reasons for changing coaches: Players no longer responding to the coach Team is regressing Team is just treading water and going nowhere I don't see any of those things happening yet.
After the cool off period, I am for keeping Terry. I do think he needs to get hotter on the refs kazoos, even if it means he occasionally gets ejected, if his players are not getting the benefit of the doubt. But I feel he is a good coach who will show more dividends going forward with better shooting off the bench that hopefully is added this offseason.
Stotts needs to go... we need a coach who makes teams matchup with us instead of always trying to matchup with them.
