We give every year and we try and make it something delicious. Sadly, we forgot, yesterday.

You can still put a bag out for your letter carrier to pick up tomorrow.

Native American ancestry + alcoholic father = very little alcohol for me except once in a while.

I've got alcoholics everywhere in my family, also. Also a lot of Native American blood in the family on my father's side.

I use to drink a lot but now find myself only wanting about 1 drink a week. My wife also use to drink quite a bit but now drinks about the same as me. Why? I've no idea. My alcoholic relatives are now long passed away. They also lived about 2,500 miles from me so I had little interaction.

Anyhow, your description touched me and I wish you the best.

My father stopped drinking several years ago so I guess I shouldn't call him an alcoholic anymore.

My mom's side of the family is Native American, but my grandparents never drank. My German/English dad on the other hand was an alcoholic. Died of liver cancer at 62. His dad was too. And my brother. I don't drink much anymore; but when I go to France I build up an alcohol tolerance real fast, and I'm drinking a minimum of a bottle of wine a day with friends and family until I get home and dry out, LOL.

I've been to a few AA meetings and they stressed that once you're an alcoholic you're always an alcoholic even if you give up the bottle.

being an alcoholic is a life sentence...stopping is great but he'll always be an alcoholic...just a sober one..glad to hear he has it under control....I have some alcoholic relatives as well and friends..I haven't smoked tobacco in many years but I'm a tobacco addict....slip once and I'm right back in it.

Yep. That's what they taught my parents as well. They've both been sober some 30 years now.

The addict is still there. Once an addict, always an addict. Going sober doesn't take the addiction away; it simply bundles it up and stores it somewhere.

My father is trying to quit smoking with the patch. According to him, he has one cigarette in the morning, and that's it. He says it's hell.

I wasn't sure before I read this thread, but now I know I'm drinking tonight.

I just ate a Whopper and about a hundred peanut M&Ms, so my mouth is all sweet. Last thing I want is rum and coke. How about rum and vinegar. Let's see...no vinegar...now what do I do...rum and water? boring...rum and urine? naaahhh...gotta find something sour...

Throw a wedge of lime in that rum and coke and you've got yourself a mighty tasty Cuba Libra.

I think I suggested it before but I highly recommend the book, “The Easy Way To Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. Quitting by reading a book sounds ridiculous but I quit a 40 plus year habit and it was one of the easiest things I EVER did! It’s basically Cognitive Behavior Modification and uses a whole different mental approach than what smokers are used to. Carr encourages you to smoke along as you read. By the end of the book I didn’t want to smoke but, as encouraged, I had one last cigarette when I finished reading and havent looked back. I havent had a cigarette in over 4 years and haven’t been tempted once. I can’t believe I ever smoked. The book can be bought for around $13 on Amazon or can be found for free in your local library. Do your dad a favor and buy him a copy. I suspect he’ll ditch that last one a day smoke easily.

That's way better than my method...I spent a small fortune eating nicotine lozenges like popcorn.
