This would drastically change the sports world as we know it. If the leagues get involved, as they should, teams could double what they are worth and we would see things like the salary cap sky rocket again. Amongst many other things. Just a huge development.
Just March Madness ALONE brings in 2.5 billion in sports betting dollars. This could potentially make more money for sports franchises than ticket sales and TV deals combined depending on how the league negotiated the deal.
We used to bet on NBA games back in the early 90s though right? Or was that NFL? You just got to 7-11 and fill out the sheet.
Yes, it was called SportsAction... it was great! You had to pick a minimum of 3 game parlay per ticket, $20 max bet, so it was controlled... lots of fun, was really upset when they got rid of it.
Yeah IIRC that was through the Oregon Lottery. Lots of push back from pro leagues. Oregon Lottery should hurry up and get in on bringing it back ahead of the curve.
So from what I’m reading sports leagues might only get 1% off the top. Which when you’re talking about billions of dollars is still a lot, but nothing like it could be. This could get interesting in college athletics too. I could see this being a falling domino that leads to college athletes being paid.
This ruling didn't really affect Oregon. Sports Action existed prior to PASPA (1992), so we were actually grandfathered in to allowing sports betting. Only reason they stopped it in 2006 was so they could host March Madness tourney games. NCAA and selection committee are meeting today to discuss how to respond to this ruling.
I think this is really bad news. I don't like betting or any type of gambling short of a buck on the lottery.
Or allows people to make their own decisions. What's the problem with people doing whay you wouldn't as long as it's not hurting anything/ anyone?
I occasionally gamble, but my mom was addicted. I personally walked her into the local casino to ban herself from ever going there again. She was losing 6 figures a year, hiding it, saying money she needed was for other reasons, etc...While I think we all should be responsible enough to make our own decisions, unfortunately many people are not able to control themselves. I don't know if allowing more sports gambling will create more people addicted to gambling, but it will create an environment for it. This decision will definitely change the way sports is talked about on TV. Instead of everyone laughing about Musburger referencing betting lines while calling a game, it will become the norm.
That's how I remember it. The NCAA is going to run out of states to hold tournaments in if that's going to be their position going forward.
Its ultimately on them to be responsible. I feel like sports gambling is less impulsive and if somebody has a gambling problem, it's nut gonna matter if State sportsbooks are legal or not.
