It was pretty quiet around the Portland Trail Blazers this summer. With Jusuf Nurkic the most important free agent could be kept, otherwise only minor changes were made to the squad. Can the Blazers repeat their good last season even though the competition has been diligently upgraded?

    Portland Trail Blazers: The Transactions
The most important feature of the summer in Rip City was the extension of Center Jusuf Nurkic. This took off surprisingly quickly and smoothly, the Bosnian remains for another four years and a total of 48 million in the northwest.

On the other hand, Shabazz Napier and Pat Connaughton were not held. Both Guards were Restricted Free Agents, but Portland pulled back the qualifying offer in both cases. Unrestricted, the two joined Brooklyn and Milwaukee at the minimum for two years.

As a replacement, the Blazers shooter Nik Stauskas from Brooklyn got to the minimum. For Seth Curry, who missed the full season in Dallas for a knee injury, Portland used parts of the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (2.8 million). Newcomers include first-round picker Anfernee Simons (# 24), who did not play college, and Duke's playmaker and second-round pick (# 39) Gary Trent Jr., for whom the Blazers earned two second-round picks (2019, 2021) and a little cash to Sacramento were trading.

Finally, the departure of Big Ed Davis caused a stir, which was considered a good friend of Damian Lillard. The franchise player was disappointed accordingly. In the end, the Nets simply offered more money by giving Davis the $ 4.45 million Room Exception for a year. Georgios Papagiannis, who was brought in last season, received his papers. The Greek Center is now back in his homeland for Panathinaikos.

    Portland Trail Blazers: The Strategy
The core should be kept together and that was done with the Nurkic extension, the Bosnians signed a long-term, a very team-friendly deal. In addition, shooting at the Blazers was very high on the agenda and the new additions embody all this property.

Both Stauskas (40.0 percent threesome) and Curry (42.5 percent in 2016/17) and rookie Trent (40.2 percent in college) know how to put away throw-throws in the basket, bringing some much-needed firepower. In the playoffs, the Blazers fell to the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round terribly on the nose, because the litter just was not there. Only CJ McCollum and Al-Farouq Aminu scored better than the league average of 36 percent.

Generally, the Blazers have become a tad younger. It's idle to speculate whether Portland simply could not fish the available veterans, or whether the plan was actually to trust younger players. So it is now dependent on Zach Collins or Wade Baldwin are constantly in the rotation and can help the team. The side effect is that Portland has saved so much money, even though the franchise continues to rank above the luxury tax limit at $ 12.5 million.

Damian Lillard CJ McCollum Maurice Harkless Al-Farouq Aminu Yusuf Nurkic
Wade Baldwin IV Seth Curry Evan Turner Caleb Swanigan Zach Collins
Anfernee Simons Nik Stauskas Jake Layman Meyers Leonard
    Gary Trent Jr.

    Portland Trail Blazers: The Weaknesses
The starting five of the Blazers reads once again very well, but behind it gape further some threatening holes, it lacks balance in the roster. The forward positions are again very thinly occupied, from the trio Harkless, Turner and Aminu no one may injure themselves under any circumstances. However, only Harkless radiates great danger from a distance, Aminu and above all Turner are classified as streaky.

On the guard positions, however, there are shooters in abundance, but on the other hand, rather serious problems in the defense. Above all, the departure of Napier could hurt if Baldwin, Simons or Trent Jr. not hit reasonably. At least the performances of the youngsters in the Summer League, which won the Blazers for the first time, caused some confidence.

Much is based on the hope of potential, even among the bigs. Collins showed some light moments in his rookie season, including in the playoffs, but often played on the four alongside Davis. With his strength under the board, this was an essential reason that Portland had the best result in the regular season since 2000.

Collins, on the other hand, is more of a skill player who still lacks mass to permanently mimic the Nurkic backup. In 2017/18, Portland was still a top 5 team under the basket, it would not be surprising if the Blazers in this discipline in the upcoming season maximum average will be.

Portland Trail Blazers: The bearer of hope
Lillard has always said in the past that his team needs reinforcement, especially in terms of depth. This summer he did not get it again, also because financially lacking funds. It was therefore not surprising that trade rumors arose, so that the Blazers even felt compelled to publish a statement. In it, GM Neil Olshey once again made it clear that Lillard will continue to be a blazer.

With good reason: Portland needs again a Lillard, who acted as in the second half terrific, in the MVP voting even fourth and was elected to the All-NBA First Team. At 28, the Guard is in the prime of his career and will want to confirm the past season again.

"I can not control the Free Agency," Lillard said of the Blazers offseason. "But what I can control is how I can improve myself and lead this team in the coming season." That will be sorely needed, otherwise it could be a disappointing season in Rip City.

    Portland Trail Blazers: The conclusion
The main goal of the offseason was achieved with the Nurkic extension, the Bosnian was not overpaid as feared. This is an important fact for the Blazers, who otherwise carry a lot of bad contracts, like those for Turner (2 years, 36.5 million) or Leonard (2 years, 21.8 million).

However, it remains a mystery why rotation players like Napier, Davis or Connaughton were made without much effort, also because on the other side with Curry and Stauskas no players came, in which the franchise players beat somersaults. So the best new additions to the team could actually be the Drafted.

However, in the embattled West, stagnation could have devastating consequences. It should not be fooled by third place from last season, the lead on ninth place (Denver) was just three wins.

Repeating the home advantage in the playoffs should be a Herculean task and it will probably mean that there will be a lot of hitting and stinging around the last postseason places with a lot of other teams. But this is not the claim of this ambitious team.

I know there are apps that can take pictures of objects and translate what that object is in different languages. I don’t know if any api’s for translating text from a screenshot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one exists.
