Jackson, defense lead No. 23 Northwestern past Illinois

When Northwestern defensive end Samdup Miller stretched out his hands to push the football into Illinois' end zone in the third quarter Saturday night, fellow defensive end Joe Gazianodanced wildly across the field, fists pumping.

Gaziano's sack had just forced the ball out of Illinois quarterback Cam Thomas' hands. And, on a night when the crowd was quiet and small, the Wildcats' offense had been sluggish, Miller's score pushed No. 23 Northwestern to a 21-7 lead that even early in the third quarter felt like too much for the Illini to overcome.

J.T. Barrett leads CFP-hopeful Ohio State past Wisconsin, to Big Ten title

J.T. Barrett felt and played like his old self Saturday.

The only thing that would make the Ohio State quarterback feel better would be making the playoffs.

Six days after undergoing surgery on his right knee, Barrett started the game, threw two touchdown passes, ran for another and led No. 8 Ohio State to a 27-21 victory over previously unbeaten No. 3 Wisconsin for the Buckeyes' first Big Ten title since their 2014 national championship run.

Purdue caps Brohm's 1st year with 38-35 bowl win vs. Arizona

When Elijah Sindelar took the field for Purdue's late comeback attempt in a bowl game he thought back on a failed opportunity in a similar situation in the season opener.

The difference from that interception he threw against Louisville to a bowl-game winning touchdown against Arizona sums up the progress the Boilermakers made in their first season under coach Jeff Brohm.

Sindelar threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Mahoungouwith 1:44 remaining and Purdue capped its most successful season in years in dramatic style with a 38-35 victory over Arizona in the Foster Farms Bowl on Wednesday night.

Iowa rallies to beat Boston College 27-20 in Pinstripe Bowl

Akrum Wadley had never been to Yankee Stadium, even though he grew up about 20 miles across the river in New Jersey. On his first visit, he seemed to bring out all of Newark to cheer him on. His 40 tickets to give away weren't enough to satiate his hometown fans.

"I couldn't get more tickets," he said, laughing.

He had all his fans in New Jersey to the ones freezing inside Yankee Stadium to the black-and-gold faithful in Iowa that packed bars roaring in approval: Wadley's homecoming ended with an MVP trophy that helped put the Hawkeyes' bowl misery on ice.

Wadley rushed, received and returned in dazzling fashion on a frozen field and Iowa beat Boston College 27-20 in the frigid Pinstripe Bowl on Wednesday night to snap a five-game bowl losing streak.

Lewerke, Spartans roll past Cougars 42-17 in Holiday Bowl

Michigan State put a nice, big exclamation mark on its turnaround season.

Brian Lewerke threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and LJ Scott ran for 110 yards and two scores for No. 18 Michigan State, which took advantage of Luke Falk's absence to rout No. 21 Washington State 42-17 in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night.

No. 21 Northwestern edges Kentucky 24-23 in Music City Bowl

Pat Fitzgerald's decisions to go for it over and over on fourth down, even late in a move that nearly cost the Wildcats dearly.

His defense had their coach's back.

The Wildcats broke up Kentucky's 2-point conversion, and No. 21 Northwestern held off Kentucky 24-23 on Friday in a Music City Bowl that might be remembered more for injuries, ejections and a wild finish.

Playoff-snubbed Ohio State 24-7 over USC in Cotton Bowl

Playoff-snubbed Ohio State got to raise another trophy in the building where the Buckeyes won a national championship.

While the streaming confetti this time was for a Cotton Bowl victory instead of a title celebration like three seasons ago, coach Urban Meyer still got a special feeling from the fifth-ranked Buckeyes' defensively dominant 24-7 win over No. 8 Southern California.

No. 9 Penn State tops No. 12 Washington 35-28 in Fiesta Bowl

Converting on third downs had been a sore spot at Penn State, so coach James Franklin made it a point of emphasis in spring ball and fall camp.

The Nittany Lions kept working at it during the season and kept getting better, peaking at the perfect time.

Trace McSorley threw for 342 yards and had both of his touchdown passes to DaeSean Hamilton on third-down plays, helping No. 9 Penn State outlast No. 12 Washington 35-28 in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday.

Hornibrook's 4 TDs carry Badgers over Miami, 34-24 in Orange

Alex Hornibrook's first pass of the night was a wobbler, one that seemed to slip out of his hand.

Nearly everything else he threw was just about perfect.

Hornibrook threw four touchdown passes, three to Danny Davis, and No. 6 Wisconsin capped off the winningest season in school history by topping No. 11 Miami 34-24 in the Orange Bowl on Saturday night.

The latest on the Maryland football controversy

The University of Maryland board of regents held a closed meeting Friday morning in Baltimore, where it unanimously voted to assume authority and control over all aspects of two university-prompted investigations into the June 13 death of Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair from heatstroke.

Beyond the already-announced suspensions of head coach DJ Durkin and two of his staff members, no major personnel issues have been announced. Here's a look at the current status at Maryland, the key remaining questions, and some answers based on a copy of Durkin's contract obtained by ESPN:

OSU board to meet Wednesday about Urban Meyer investigation

Ohio State's board of trustees will meet Wednesday morning to discuss "personnel matters" related to the recently concluded investigation involving football coach Urban Meyer.

Investigators working on behalf of Ohio State were briefing trustees on their findings during an informal meeting Monday afternoon, the university announced. Ohio laws require that the board provides at least 24 hours of public notice for any formal meetings it plans to hold. A statement from the university said the board members will not reach any conclusions in their meeting Monday.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer suspended and prohibited from coaching first 3 games

Ohio State has suspended coach Urban Meyer through Sept. 2 without pay. Meyer can rejoin the program after Sept. 2, but will not be allowed to coach in the team's first three games.

Additionally, OSU athletic director Gene Smith has also been suspended without pay from Aug. 31 until Sept. 16.

The moves come after a two-week investigation into allegations that Meyer and others mishandled domestic assault accusations made against former assistant coach Zach Smith.

Heyward helps No. 11 Michigan State beat Utah State 38-31

Michigan State desperately needed a big play to avoid an upset and Felton Davis delivered.

Davis made a fully extended, 31-yard catch to help set up Connor Heyward's second touchdown with 2 minutes left to put the 11th-ranked Spartans ahead and they held on to beat Utah State 38-31 on Friday night.

Taylor scores twice, No. 4 Wisconsin beats W. Kentucky

Jonathan Taylor took the handoff and went left as the Wisconsin offensive line and three tight ends cleared a path to the end zone.

The dynamic back waited patiently for the holes and weaved through traffic. The closest any defender got to tackling Taylor was when defensive back Kyle Bailey reached out but could only tug at his jersey.

For openers, not a bad start for the fourth-ranked Badgers and their star tailback.

Taylor had two long touchdown runs, Alex Hornibrook threw for 257 yards and two scores and Wisconsin opened the season with a 34-3 victory over Western Kentucky on Friday night.

No. 10 Nittany Lions survive Appalachian St. in OT

After the squandering of a 14-point, fourth-quarter lead against a program with a history of being a giant-killer, things grew tense in Happy Valley.

But not for Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley.

The Heisman Trophy hopeful led a game-tying drive with less than a minute to go to force overtime, and No. 10 Penn State rebounded to hold off Appalachian State 45-38 exactly 11 years after the Mountaineers stunned Michigan in one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
