Why would Cleveland trade him for anything other than a package that gives up too much?

I love Otto Porter. Here's my ideal trade deadline:

WAS Gets: Harkless, 2019 POR 1st, Right to Swap POR 2020, 3rd team TPE or expiring
POR Gets: Porter Jr., Jodie Meeks (TPE)
3rd Team Gets: Meyers Leonard, future 2nd
    then

LAC Gets: Al-Farouq Aminu, Caleb Swanigan, Jake Layman, Nik Stauskas, 2021 POR 1st
    POR Gets: Tobias Harris

    Sign Oliver and Onuaku

    Lillard (36) / Curry (12) / Baldwin
    McCollum (35) / Curry (13) / Meeks / Simons
    Porter Jr. (24) / Turner (20) / Curry (4) / Trent Jr.
    Harris (34) / Porter Jr. (10) / Collins (4)
    Nurkic (30) / Collins (18) / Onuaku / Oliver

Clips have 17 guaranteed contracts as is, they're not looking for 3 more.

They'd have 15 mid-season, and would likely cut Stauskas and Layman leaving them with to 16. They could send us Evans who we could absorb with our MLE. We'd just need to match salary.

Now that we went another offseason without any significant trades, here’s what’s going to happen at the deadline.

Neil will trade Harkless to the Kings for one of their expirings to get under the tax for next season. Probably Shumpert. Neil will sell it as acquiring a playoff tested vet. I will have a bittersweet feeling since there was a time when he appealed to me as a player, but not as a rental, and certainly not at the expense of Harkless. Paul Allen will then breath a quick sigh of relief, as will the couple of resident accountants on the board, and Neil will go back to selling everyone on the idea that there are better deals to be had in the summer. Round and round we go.

Why would they make a trade to save luxury tax money next year? The tax line is supposed to jump up to $132 million. If Harkless goes missing for parts of the season again I'd be fine trading him for an expiring.

My point is the only moves they’ll make will be financially motivated, because that’s pretty much all they’ve been doing the last year

    1. Dumped Crabbe
    2. Dumped Vonleh
    3. Traded 15 and 20 for 10, saving them money

Until I see an actual commitment to anything other than the teams payroll, I won’t expect anything else.

Every move you mentioned saved them money on the current league year those trades took place. The only move I can think of that was for the next year financially was Mason Plumlee but I think that had more to do with simply not wanting to pay Plumlee that much.

As president of that club, I reject this notion.

So dumping Crabbe and Vonleh had no impact on subsequent payrolls?

Well since Crabbe had 3 years left on his deal of course it did but the main point of the trade was to get close enough to the luxury tax line to get under at the deadline, which they did. It's not like they traded him for an expiring contract though.

The Vonleh trade absolutely had no impact on subsequent payrolls. He was in the final year of his deal and moving him got us under the tax line for the current season.

So you think they’ll trade aminu(I think hes expiring?) to stay under? I assume they’re over right now? I dont have any idea where there ar cap wise at the moment.

No, trading Aminu by himself doesn't get them under. Plus other than the Kings no other team can take on that much salary (without looking at if any teams have a big trade exception). The whole point of getting under the last couple years was to not start the repeater tax knowing that this year would be the year it would become really hard to duck the tax. The Nurk deal did help a little bit in terms of it not being impossible but it's still unlikely.

Now if they did the deal with Sacramento that Scalma mentioned without bringing back anyone (just give them Harkless) then we could duck the tax or if they got Sacramento to take Leonard with a 1st round pick attached or something like that. I don't think it's going to happen this year.

Trading Vonleh had an impact unless you think they would’ve renounced him had he stayed. Looking at our roster, specifically the front court, I’m not sure they would have. But that’s a hypothetical.

That argument kind of goes out the window when he signed for a partially guaranteed deal with NY. This isn't like the Plumlee situation where Portland knew they were going to have to overpay for him if he stayed.

realistically speaking Vonlehs fate was sealed the minute they drafted Biggie. Explains why he was benched once Aminu came back from his injury despite playing well. Then they dumped him to get under the tax and kept an inferior (but cheaper) player in Swanigan.

    I’d do a Biggie/Vonleh swap in a second.

But my question is if they knew Ed wasn’t going to be brought back, why didn’t they trade him at the deadline? They could’ve dipped under the tax and held onto Vonleh at the same time. Now we lost both and are relying on fucking Meyers Leonard for rotation minutes while Caleb has one foot out of the league.

I honestly don’t think the decision to let Ed go was made until the Pelicans series. He was the fall guy, and it opened the door up for Meyers to prove Neil was right about him all along. I’m sure that idea got him hard. I thought handing Connaughton a rotation spot was bad last year, but it’s nothing compared to what’s unfolding this year.
