This is plainly not true. It would be a document entitled non-standard purchase and condition terms - quite frequently used in things like Mergers and Acquistions. Very easily enforced, particularly with a signed document & the power and backing of a billion dollar company and its lawyers.

Even so, the Blazers are owned by Vulcan, could keep a small minority portion with the caveat that I outlined prior.

Kolde might be another name to throw in the ring for owner one day, as well.

Countdown clock might get stuck at .9. Bug or feature?

Things like "you have to keep the team in this city for the next 50 years" are simply not enforceable because of the way things can change nowadays in the world. It calls for something that is simply unreasonable when talking about competative markets. The new owners can pretty easily lay out a case of it being anti-competitive and unduly restrictive.

Kolde would be a good person in a group or a behind the scenes guy. However, I am guessing the Vulcans will get rid of him prior to selling the team.

I am guessing this will be a fairly rapid sale (before the all star break).

    1. Dump big contracts (minus Lillard)
    2. Sell franchise

It’s starting to make sense on why McGowan was named CEO for both organizations. I think he’s probably been fighting this for sometime and the news came out 2 weeks ago.

I hope Vulcan/Jody takes the team and sells it to local group here in Portland led By Merrit Paulson. It wouldn’t surprise me to that group work Clyde into it. It’s a conflict of interest for Phil Knight to get involved so I don’t see that. It would be nice.

I just hope this is not set for the franchise to move and all that they have done was to position this team for that purpose.

Why's that? Why would a couple tens of millions affect a 1.3B sale...?

Also, were can't dump big contracts, there's no options available to do that. The contracts expire in 2 years, and who knows if the team will even be sold by then...

Yeah if it was doable to dump the bad contracts they’d already be dumped.

A team with a low payroll is more attractive than one with a high payroll. New owners will not want obligations, they want a clean slate. This is why the Lakers CP3 trade was voided by the league who was selling the team, it would have left the Hornets with veterans with several years on the books.

They can package guys like CJ and Nurk with bigger contracts like Turner and Leonard for ending contracts and picks. The team is essentislly in limbo until the sale goes through.

Only if it kept the Blazers competitive. With no owner, that is no longer an objective. The Blazers are now a balance sheet.

This really isn’t about money for the Allen family, they just don’t want the hassle of the day to day operations of owning sports franchises. I don’t see them seeing this as a “balance sheet”, in fact I see it more of wanting to do what Paul would of wanted. I’ll be shocked if they don’t go above and beyond to sell the franchise to someone who will keep it where Paul wanted it. In fact, like I stated before I fully expect he has left stipulations regarding the sale of both teams. He bought both franchises to keep them in the PNW, you really think he would want his death associated with the Blazers being moved???

    Makes no sense.

If the team was held by a Trust, then the team would stay in Portland. That really is the way to guarantee the Blazers staying in Oregon if it was Paul Allen's wish to do so.

Jody Allen wouldnt need to manage the day to day operations, Vulcan Sports would as a fiduciary. It is profitable, so if money wasn't a concern (team was not losing money), it should have been structured like this instead of a sale if this was the objective.

If the Franchise is for sale, the team is absolutely a balance sheet. To say otherwise is completely unprofessional.

We have “heard” the team is for sale but we have also “heard” Allen left specifics in regards to the sale. I highly doubt less than 24 hrs after his passing anyone outside the family really knows for sure what’s going to happen.

The sale of the Sonics left a stink on the league that it's still cleaning up. You think the Vulcan Group leadership would let a similar event stain the legacy of the one guy at work they most cared about? They would quit first. If there are a set of stipulations that Allen left for the sale of the Blazers, they will be followed "to a T" with the whole league watching.

Where are some of you getting the info of what he really wanted for his franchise? Has something been posted online? I think it's possible that Jody keeps the teams together as a package and allows Chris McGowan to manage the franchises. To make it easier to manage it wouldn't surprise me to see her try to move this franchise to Seattle. It's rumored she likes the Seahawks and still wants to be a part of that organization.

Paul Allen has always been a little "eccentric" in some of his decision making.

I think they keep Seattle but sell the Blazers.

Funny how you say this than say baseless speculation.

The answer to your question is common sense. Based on all that Paul's ever said or done, why would he let the team jump ship after he passed?
