Newman helps Wake upset No. 22 NC State, 27-23

Everything seemed aligned against Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons had a quarterback making his first start, an injury-depleted defense facing an offense peppered with future NFL players, and trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter in a stadium where they almost never win,

Yet No. 22 North Carolina State couldn't seal the victory, so Wake Forest snatched it away.

Jamie Newman threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jack Freudenthalwith 30 seconds left to give Wake Forest a 27-23 upset victory Thursday night.

Bobby Petrino Reportedly Fired by Louisville After 4-Plus Seasons

Bobby Petrino's second stint as Louisville head coach is over.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports reported that the university relieved Petrino of his duties Sunday, a day after the Cardinals' 54-23 blowout loss to Syracuse. The loss dropped Louisville to an embarrassing 2-8 on the season, including a 0-7 mark in ACC play.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports added assistant coaches Nick Petrino, L.D. Scott and Ryan Beard were also fired. Thamel noted they are Petrino's son and sons-in-law. Director of football operations Andy Wagner was let go as well, per Thamel.

Miami wins regular-season finale, tops No. 24 Pitt 24-3

The biggest contribution that a Miami player made on the Hurricanes' regular-season finale against Pittsburgh apparently came a night before kickoff, when Jaquan Johnsonaddressed his teammates.

He likened adversity to quicksand, and talked about how to escape.

"It really hit us hard, in the heart," running back Travis Homer said.

Homer was apparently listening, as were plenty of other Hurricanes. Homer needed only eight carries to rush for 168 yards, DeeJay Dallasran back a punt for one of his two scores and Miami knocked off No. 24 Pittsburgh 24-3 on Saturday.

No. 19 Syracuse beats Boston College 42-21

Syracuse coach Dino Babers was watching Eric Dungey in practice this week when he realized his quarterback didn't look like a guy who had an injury.

"He did something that was really, really natural," Babers said. "All the hair stood up on my arm because right then I knew we had a chance to win."

Dungey threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns and ran for three more scores on Saturday, leading No. 19 Syracuse to a 42-21 victory over Boston College.

Newman leads Wake Forest past Memphis 37-34 in bowl comeback

Jamie Newman's season started on a sour note and finished on a sweet one.

Newman ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left to cap a big performance and Wake Forest's comeback in a 37-34 victory over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday. The quarterback who lost the competition for the starting job in fall camp, then replaced an injured Sam Hartman, delivered big play after big play in a storybook ending to the season.

Jones, Duke offense roll past Temple in Independence Bowl

Temple was making big special-teams plays, returning interceptions for touchdowns and looking like a team that might crush Duke for a big postseason win.

But the Owls had one problem that couldn't be overcome: Coach David Cutcliffe doesn't lose in Shreveport.

Daniel Jones threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns, T.J. Rahmingcaught 12 passes for 240 yards and two scores, and Duke recovered from a slow start to blow past Temple 56-27 in the Independence Bowl on Thursday.

Syracuse tops West Virginia in Camping World Bowl, 34-18

Syracuse sent Eric Dungey out a winner, and got a good look at its future.

Dungey capped his record-setting college career by throwing for 303 yards, Abdul Adams and Trishton Jackson combined to score three touchdowns in their Syracuse debuts and the 17th-ranked Orange got their first 10-win season since 2001 by topping No. 15 West Virginia 34-18 in the Camping World Bowl on Friday.

Perkins, Zaccheaus lead Virginia over South Carolina 28-0

Shortly after winning the Belk Bowl and earning Virginia its first bowl victory since 2005, quarterback Bryce Perkinsraised the bar.

"This is the first step toward making big strides," Perkins said. "Next year we want the Coastal Division -- and the ACC championship."

That would mean knocking off perennial ACC power Clemson, which has won four straight conference titles.

For now though, the Cavaliers (8-5) will have to settle for savoring a 28-0 victory over South Carolina in the Belk Bowl, a win that snapped the longest bowl drought in the ACC.

Lawrence lights up Notre Dame, No. 2 Clemson cruises 30-3

When Clemson's Dabo Swinney entrusted a team with championship aspirations to freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence in September, this is what the Tigers' coach had in mind.

Lawrence threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns and No. 2 Clemson beat No. 3 Notre Dame 30-3 on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl to reach the College Football Playoff title game. The Tigers (14-0) will play No. 1 Alabama -- a 45-34 winner over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl -- for a fourth straight season in the playoff on Jan. 7 in Santa Clara, California.

Orange Crush: Clemson topples No. 1 'Bama for national title

Dabo Swinney kissed the championship trophy and proclaimed this Clemson team the greatest of all time.

    He's got a case.

With stunning ease -- and a freshman quarterback -- Clemson toppled college football's greatest dynasty again to become the first perfect playoff champion.

Trevor Lawrence passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns and the second-ranked Tigers beat No. 1 Alabama 44-16 on Monday night in the College Football Playoff national championship game.

Etienne's 3 TDs lead No. 1 Clemson past Georgia Tech, 52-14

Travis Etienne spent all offseason trying to ignore the national attention headed his way. He'll have a harder time doing that after the show he put on in No. 1 Clemson's opener.

Etienne, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, rushed for a career-high 205 yards and three touchdowns, including one from 90 yards out, as the Tigers overpowered Georgia Tech 52-14 Thursday night for their 16th straight victory in the opener for both ACC teams.
