I was watching the Mavs feed today and they gave a stat that blew me away. They said the Blazers have only drawn five charging calls in opponents all season. Curry May have gotten one today, but how is that possible? Is that a choice by Terry and his staff or are the players just totally inept at taking a charge?
The Blazers should take it to the NBA to get consistent calls for both teams using examples from games like the Mavs loss and the uneven statistics that are available. Obvious manipulation of the outcome of games by the refs is damaging to the popularity, earnings, and reputation of the NBA and should be corrected.
I don't know about that exact number of 5, but according to NBA hustle stats, Portland is dead last in the league in charges drawn at 0.09....per game, I'm guessing?
Yup, it’s right. Change the advanced stats mode from per game to totals. Only 5 charges drawn all season. The Kings are the next worse at 8. Everyone else is at 15 or more. The Pistons are the best at 46. https://stats.nba.com/teams/hustle/?Season=2018-19&SeasonType=Regular Season&PerMode=Totals
That has to be by design. Nurk/Meyers/Zach are usually our bigs at the rim. None of them takes charges. Dug a little more: Dame has drawn 4. Caleb has drawn the one other. Illyasova leads the league with 34 by himself. 39 players in the NBA have more charges drawn by themselves than our whole team combined. Last year, we had 17 total charges drawn for the whole season (tied for worst in the league with Chicago) -- Dame with 8, and a few others with 1 or 2. Interesting thing was, GS and UTA only had 20.
That’s my thought too. It’s nice to draw a charge, but how many fouls do you give up trying to draw one? My bet is that with a young team like the Blazers it’s a net negative to try to take them instead of just playing good defense.
I'm not sure what metric being last in 'charges' is, but with Stotts over that last couple of years, it seems like this team has been last or near last in a number of categories. Fast break points Assists Steals Thankfully he is a great coach in many other areas.
I never have like Stotts defense scheme it really leaves our bigs vulnerable when they have some player coming down hill on them. 8-10 times there going to foul. So basically the scheme sucks.
That’s not a scheme issue, that’s a player issue. The guards need to do a better job of staying in front of their guy. But this has been an issue for years.
Due our guards can't stay in front anybody and our bigs standing under the basket like Stotts like then it's a scheme issue.
