Edwards' 38 helps No. 17 Purdue hold off Penn State in OT

Matt Painter was surprised to see his best player getting open shots early. He wasn't surprised when Carsen Edwards made one after the other, and then drained the well-defended ones later.

The Big Ten's leading scorer finished with 38 points, including 20 in the first half and a four-point play in overtime, to lead No. 17 Purdue past Penn State 99-90 on Thursday night.

    Iowa stuns No. 5 Michigan

Michigan's Colin Castleton squared up for a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer, only to see the ball get stuck between the backboard and the rim in front of jubilant Iowa students clamoring to storm the floor.

It was the brick that encapsulated a lost night for Big Blue.

Luka Garza scored 19 points, Joe Wieskamp added 16 and Iowa stunned fifth-ranked Michigan 74-59 on Friday night, handing the Wolverines their second loss of the season. Ryan Kriener had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Hawkeyes (17-5, 6-5 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game losing streak with their biggest win in years.

Brazdeikis scores 23 to lead No. 17 Michigan over Rutgers

Coming off their worst game of the season, No. 7 Michigan did almost everything right to give coach John Beilein a school record-setting win on his 66th birthday.

Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis scored 23 points, Zavier Simpson came close to the triple-double and the Wolverines (21-2, 10-2 Big Ten) hit nine of their first 11 shots in opening a big lead and beating Rutgers 77-65 on Tuesday night.

Illinois' defense spurs 79-74 win over No. 9 Michigan State

Illinois coach Brad Underwood had tears in his eyes after his Illini upset Tom Izzo's ninth-ranked Michigan State Spartans.

"Michigan State is a great team, and Tom is a great coach," Underwood said. "They're everything I want to be."

Ayo Dosunmu scored 24 points, and the Illini used its swarming defense to shock the Spartans. Illinois forced 24 turnovers by Michigan State, including 17 in the first half.

Fans stormed the court after the Illini dribbled out the final 9 seconds of the game.

"I mean, it's just one of 20 (Big Ten games), I know," Underwood said. "But man, it's also more than that, you know? It feels like one of those defining moments, I think, where we found out who we are."

Smith, Fernando lead No. 24 Maryland past Nebraska 60-45

Jalen Smith's second big offensive game of the season against Nebraska didn't decide No. 24 Maryland's win over the Cornhuskers.

The Terrapins' 60-45 victory Wednesday night was all about defense. Maryland allowed its fewest points in a conference game under eighth-year coach Mark Turgeon.

Bohannon's late run helps No. 20 Iowa hold off Indiana 77-72

Iowa's Jordan Bohannon waited patiently for his chances Thursday.

When they came, the junior guard delivered a seemingly bigger blow with each successive shot.

The junior guard matched his season-high by scoring 25 points including the last 11 to help the No. 20 Iowa hold on for a crucial 77-72 victory at Indiana.

No. 9 Michigan State beats Minnesota 79-55, ends 3-game skid

Magic Johnson was back at Michigan State, joining his teammates to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of winning the national championship.

The Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Lakers president had plenty of opportunities to flash his familiar smile.

Nick Ward had 22 points and Matt McQuaid scored a season-high 18, leading the ninth-ranked Spartans to a 79-55 win over Minnesota on Saturday to keep the festivities positive.

No. 7 Michigan outlasts No. 19 Wisconsin 61-52

Michigan avenged its loss to Wisconsin last month -- and coach John Beilein wants no part of a rubber match against the Badgers.

"Ethan Happ said to me after the game: `I hope to see you again this season," Beilein said. "No Ethan. I don't want to see you again the rest of my life."

Happ had 18 points and 11 rebounds for No. 19 Wisconsin, but Michigan's Jon Teske more than held his own inside, and Charles Matthews scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to lift the No. 7 Wolverines to a 61-52 victory Saturday. Teske had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 15 Purdue beats 'Huskers 81-62 for 8th straight win

Grady Eifert gave No. 15 Purdue the boost it needed Saturday.

And once the senior forward got started, the Boilermakers took off.

Eifert scored 16 points and had four steals, both career highs, and grabbed five offensive rebounds to help Purdue overcome a sluggish start and pull away for an 81-62 victory over Nebraska.

Bohannon nets winner, lifts No. 20 Iowa past Northwestern

Iowa's Jordan Bohannon feels most comfortable at the end of games, and it showed against Northwestern.

Bohannon hit a 3-pointer from 23 feet with three-tenths of a second remaining as No. 20 Iowa rallied from a 13-point deficit and beat Northwestern 80-79 Sunday night.

Stevens' double-double leads Penn State over No. 6 Michigan

Lamar Stevens pumped his arms, pointed with two fingers to the Bryce Jordan Center hardwood and screamed toward Penn State's student section. This is his court.

Penn State's rangy forward owned it Tuesday night, then shared it with hundreds of fans who rushed Stevens and his teammates after Penn State upset No. 6 Michigan 75-69.

Smith scores 16 as No. 24 Maryland beats No. 12 Purdue 70-56

Halfway there in its bid for a ninth straight victory, No. 12 Purdue suddenly became incapable of making a layup, popping a short jumper or sinking a shot from beyond the arc.

It was a shortcoming that could be attributed in no small degree to a relentless defensive effort by 24th-ranked Maryland.

Jalen Smith scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and the Terrapins frustrated the Boilermakers and sharpshooter Carsen Edwards in a 70-56 victory Tuesday night.

No. 6 Michigan starts fast, beats No. 24 Maryland 65-52

After a startling loss at last-place Penn State earlier in the week, Michigan coach John Beilein had a pretty good idea how his team would respond.

"I had no doubt our defense would be strong today," he said.

Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift No. 6 Michigan to a 65-52 victory over No. 24 Maryland on Saturday. The Wolverines raced out to a 14-2 advantage and led by as much as 15 in the first half. It was a struggle for Michigan after that, but that big deficit was too much for Maryland to overcome.

Edwards, Haarms team up to lead No. 12 Purdue past Penn St.

Matt Haarms gave No. 12 Purdue a boost of energy. Carsen Edwards added the scoring punch.

Together, they were a knockout combination.

Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half Saturday and Haarms celebrated his return to the starting lineup with a career-high 18 to lead the Boilermakers past pesky Penn State, 76-64.
