I know some of you either still do or, mostly likely, at one point in time did collect basketball cards.

some of you may even know that I actually have (from what I know) the best Damon Stoudamire collection in the world.

but this isnt a damon or blayza FYI

for everyone's benefit, 90s era cards are going fuckin ballistic and have been for a few years. the mid 90s brought in the first real auto set, the Skybox Autographics line, and also signaled the start of jersey/patch cards and serially numbered inserts.

the real 'grail' of the serial numbered inserts from this period has been the (again) Skybox Metal Universe's Previous Metal Gems. They are serial numbered to 100, but the first 10 are green, the remaining 90 are red.

In all my years of collecting, since damon was at arizona, ive only seen 3 DS reds and 1x Green (which is owned by a multi multi millionaire trying to get the set, shit) and i've bought 2 of the DS reds ive seen.

The green's are basically mythical in the world of card collecting.... and currently we are blessed to see what is arguably the most desirable insert on the planet up for sale atm

the Michael Jordan PMG Green 6/100

this is actually the 2nd auction for this as the first (just a few days back) got wildly out of control on bidding, its since moved to pre-approved bidders only now).

The hobby has been ablaze with speculation of sell price, many picking 80-120K.... in the first auction it hit just under 600k in less that 24hrs. breaks pumped, relisted and vetted now.

its already over 100k after being listed for 3hrs at the time i post this.

there has also been some REALLY amazing cards pop up recently which people (including me) thought id never see as they are mid 90s and never revealed or anything, just a lot of collectors dreaming and assuming they were in a pack/box/collection somewhere or lost/destroyed.

Here's a couple of incredible cards that have turned up recently.

Grant Hill Essential Credentials Now 1/1

and the Jordan Fleer Ultra 1 of 1 Masterpiece

probably north of 100k in those 2 cards there - same collector, got them on release, got married stopped collecting, friend looking through his stuff, saw these, died.

and this turned up the other day too

another essential credentials future, TMAC 1/2 - unreal.

This is so interesting it belongs in the main forum instead of OT.

cool, didnt know if it was ok to put it in the main so thought id start in the the OT

I thought id also give a little more commentary on Jordan, as some may notice that in the PSA grading slab it reads 'altered'.

now, bare with me for a second as i attempt to explain the grading companies and the impact they have had on the hobby - both positive and increasingly negative.

so with grading, you can submit a card you have that you think looks really nice, crisp edges, nicely centered, zero flaws etc and get it professionally graded by PSA, BGS, SGC etc

The difference between a 'raw' MJ rookie (ie ungraded) and a PSA 10 (gem mint) or a BGS 9.5 or a 10 is astronomical.

book on MJ rc raw, is like 1000-1200 i think atm, PSA 10 is around 20-25k , BGS 9.5 around the same, and BGS pristine 10 would be, at a guess - 35-50k depending on bidders.

so grading is a great way to separate amazing from 'common' and to authenticate cards.

the authentication part is a mine field in a lot of ways. on another forum im on for card collecting there are examples of people who have noticed a specific lebron RC numbered 23/99 or whatever that was graded an 8 5yrs ago, turn up again being graded a 9.5......

how is this possible? well, welcome to the shit side of the hobby. there are people out there trimming cards to remove rough edges, regrading them and getting higher quality grades and reaping the $$$$$$$ the increased multiplier gives.

    it sucks.

the shit part as well is that the grading companies seem to have no centralised DB to realise that oh shit we graded this years ago and the edges were rough now they are perfect? ok its been altered.

i mean they could but why do it when you can charge again, right? its utterly pathetic. and the hobby is littered with shit tier people out there exploiting this and getting regraded altered cards with high grades back from the industry graders who are sposed to to be a bastion of authority. so fuckin uncool.

there is a HUGE thread on it here if you have a whole morning to read - i read the whole thing and was angry af lol LINK

so back to the MJ green. PSA has not stated they think the card is trimmed, but altered. i dunno wtf the difference is - but the left n right edges bow inwards a little vs standard cards and whilst its only a mm or less, its a deviation.

what the PSA slab does do tho, which is the main thing, is authenticates it as real. and to the collectors thats the main thing. the altered is a bitch, but its funnily enough not a deal breaker in this case due to rarity.

its going to be super interesting to watch how high the MJ goes!

Do you have a Jordan RC yourself?

I have a complete set of the 1986 Fleer with the stickers too. Unfortunately I was a kid when I collected it so my Jordan isn't in the greatest condition but it's still cool to have one.

I never thought about trimming the edges. Cards starting in the early 90's got so much better at not being off centered that I'd imagine it's a lot more noticeable than if you did it on older cards.

I say we pool our money and buy one. Then we can put it above HCP’s headboard so that way we can all see it throughout the year.

Cool topic, actually. I still have all my cards from the mid 90’s. Getting a pack from the grocery store rocked!

I remember a day when I saw that Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card at a shop in Seaside for $100 and my aunt, who always spoiled me, asked me if I wanted it. Being the good, sensible boy I was, told her thank you but it was too much (for her to spend on me).

    I was dumb.

What stood out most to me is how awful the basketball looks on that green Jordan card!

That's nothing, I used to take all my money and buy as many packs as I could of that set (1986 Fleer) for $0.25 a pack. Back then a pack usually had the same cards meaning you could tell by the first card you saw after opening what the others would be. I basically needed one pack as I was missing just a few cards. So I kept buying more and more. At one point I remember having at least 7 Jordan cards.

At the time baseball cards were valuable but football and basketball cards were considered worthless. My dad occasionally got a table at a card show and would buy, sell, and trade cards. When he found out I was "wasting" all my money on basketball cards he let me keep my one set and sold all the rest at the next card show. How much did he sell them all for? He put them in a box that had a sign on it 2/$0.01!!!! They were all gone in one day. This was before there were any price guides for basketball cards.

So my dad sold at least 6 Jordan rookie cards for a grand total of $0.03. Yes, that's three cents.

It makes it even worse that most of the baseball cards from that same timeframe are pretty much worthless now. Ironic I guess.

I've got a lot of old cards that I should see if they are worth anything. Pippen, David Robinson, etc rookie cards. And some Jordan cards.
