it's a really long read but a pretty good article, especially by ESPN's shallow standards http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/25980368/how-former-ref-tim-donaghy-conspired-fix-nba-games
I have to think that they know if another ref came out and was fixing a large amount of games, that the league would be beyond fucked. The owners/NBA would lose so much money and all respect for the product they put out. That makes me think that a lot goes on behind the scenes to make sure this doesn't happen again and if it does it'll be dealt with without any of it leaking out.
It isn't a coincidence that this era is the time I stopped really watching the games. Watching the Kings get screwwwwwwwed against the Lakers was just sick.
12,186 words per a word processor ------------ The article mildly critiques both the legal system's findings, and the leagues's Pedowitz Report. It never links to the Pedowitz Report, so here it is (a 130-page pdf file I saved years ago). http://www.nba.com/media/PedowitzReport.pdf
I heard Donaghy on a podcast a couple years ago and he claimed at the time that there were multiple refs fixing the spread and that they made bets on which ref did things like goad a player into an ejection or a coach etc. The go to move was to saddle players with foul trouble or create empty possessions ...3 sec calls, etc.
If the investigation didn't inform David Stern about Tim they would have wired Tim and found out that refs like Scott Foster and Ken Maurer (still reffing) were fixing games too. There's a reason the NBA leaked the Tim story to the New York press to stop that from happening. Ken and Scott are dirty.
Donnaghy has run an online sports gambling site since he got out of jail I've read. Don't gamble so never checked it out.
I can't fathom they are dirty anymore just because of how Silver wants to expand the game into the gambling market. If they are still dirty and the NBA hasn't done anything to them then that is a recipe for the end of the league.
under the table betting will never stop...it's an addiction for some..and there are a lot of them in sports..side bets..
Idk...I think they learned what not do from Tim. They probably just changed how they do it so as to not get caught.
It would have. That's exactly why the NBA leaked it. Too warn other refs about the incoming stings and that Tim had flipped. There were others
