I dont know if anyone remembers but this guy lead his team to a nearly undefeated season and won a heisman. in reward he was drafted in the 5th round which ill never understand(yes hes short for a qb but hes taller then drew brees) My Ravens actually drafted him in the 5th round and I believe hes going to shock some people soon. IF Boller doesn't pan out, I think Troy Smith will be a great player to suceed steve mcnair. What do all of yall think about troy smith and why he dropped to the 5th?

Being a huge Ohio State fan I see no reason why he'd dropped so far. Before the National Championship game he was projected as an early second round pick but after it his stock dropped, a lot. I never understood how one bowl game could effect your stock so much. He had one bad game when the team's most important player was hurt.I hope he has a great career and proves the so called experts wrong. He won the Heisman Trophy for a reason. If there was any real reason for him falling so far maybe it was because of his pre-draft workouts or possibly because how he performed before this season? I don't know. He kind of exploded onto the scene this past season and before it he wasn't considered to be much? Who knows.

The Gators ran as close to a pro style defense, with pro style speed as what Troy Smith had seen this year. When the Florida defensive backs were fast enough to keep up with all of the Ohio State wide receivers, Troy Smith had a hard time making reads, going through his progressions, and finding open men. As a result he held onto the ball for longer, and got sacked more often, putting the Ohio State offense into alot of 3rd and long situations in the National Championship game. That was a huge reason for why Troy Smith fell down the ladder so far. I know it was only one game, but it was the only game he played all season against a team with that kind of team speed on defense, and it really showed that Smith has a hard time making reads with that kind of team defense. At the NFL level, the defenses are going to be much faster, much more complex and much more harder to read than Florida's was. Troy Smith has alot to learn to become a quality starting quarterback in this league, and it's not sure that he will become that quarterback.

The reason he dropped was because of his poor play in the Championship game. FLA played great, our best playmaker wasn't playing[Ginn] and the offensive line just didn't do a very good job. We couldn't get much going offensively, and it's the main reason scouts didn't take Troy Smith to be that good. Smith's good, I think he'll do well with the Ravens as much as it kills me to say that. I'm a Troy Smith Fan till the die I die, even if he is a Ratbird.

Your line didn't play it's best, but it's hard for them to block with as long as Troy Smith would hold onto the ball trying to make his reads. The coverage was outstanding, and he just could not find open men, so he would hold onto the ball longer. He held the ball for a much longer than quarterbacks should hold the ball for, and that was a big reason for the offensive line looking so bad.

This from my scouting magazine I picked up before the draft. (Pro Football Weekley 2007 Draft) "Comes off as too rehearsed and not genuine. Tends to run with the wrong crowd and can rub some people the wrong way. Sources say he likes to point the finger and pass the blame in games and practices. Expects prima-donna treatment, and questions linger about how he will be able to handle the money and all the trappings of NFL success." So cleary, he has some other side issues that you don't normally hear about in scouting reports.

AKA....Troy Smith is gonna be another NFL nut case. I was on Troy Smith when he first got the starting spot. I'm a OSU fan and I felt as though Troy Smith was gonna come out the draft and be something. Even though he had a bad game against Florida it wasn't just his fault as the whole team had a bad game. How his stock dropped so damn far is crazy, but it happens. I think Boller is completely trash and Troy Smith better get ready to take over for McNair. I don't understand how a heisman winner gets picked 5th round, but heisman means nothing cause Ryan Leaf won one too [IMG]

If he has a good national title game, and they win, he's a top 10 pick. He looked so bad in that game he played himself out of a top 10 pick, which is soo bogus because it was ONE game. I was never even a big fan of him, and I hate OSU, but I'll be honest just because he's 5'11" doesn't mean he can't be a great QB and has to be a 5th rd pick.

There are a fer reasons why he dropped. First off, he wasnt going to be a top pick even with a great game. He'd been a 2nd rounder at best. 2nd, he's not a great big quarterback. He's about 6 foot and consiquently, smaller guys dont throw the deep ball as great as bigger guys. 3rd, the SEC is known as the fastest conference in college. They played a very very fast Florida defense. He had a bad outing due to this. Like a few before me said, Florida's defense is very comparable to how fast it is in the NFL. If he has trouble there, he most likely will have trouble in the league. In saying that, I'm not saying he doesn't have a chance at being a starter somewhere down the line or anything. He could end up being a good player. To me at least though, its not that hard to see why he dropped.

I cant wait to see Troy Smith prove scouts wrong and be the best qb of the 5th round since Tom Brady. This season coming is Bollers last chance, if he doesn't do something then I think he's out of the town and Mcnair only has another year or so at the most left in him.

Yeah, I don't understand it either. He's quick, athletic, he can make long passes with good accuracy, reads the field well...He's just a very good passer, and I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be a good starting QB in the future.

Clearly has some issues that hurt his stock. It's just on the field, he really rubbed some teams the wrong way.

Florida however, had alot more team speed than any team they had faced, and proved that Smith has a much harder time reading the field when the other team is just as athletic as his wide receivers are. In the NFL, defenses are going to be even faster, and more complicated to read than Florida's was. So if he had that much problem with Florida's defense, how much trouble will he have with NFL defenses? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BrewCityBuck @ Jun 3 2007, 01:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Why hasn't anyone acknowledged I posted this? There are plenty of players that are chosen high, that have some issues with them. If he was a great football talent, he would have been drafted alot higher than he is now.

Jarviss Moss had character issues, and didn't even fall out of the 1st round of the draft this year. Maurice Clarett had major character issues as well as bad work outs and slow 40 times, and was still drafted in the 3rd round because of the potential type of football player he could have been. Lendale White showed up out of shape at his combines, had no musclular endurance, tested positive for weed and had character issues and went in the 2nd round. Jimmy Williams last year was another one that had character issues and only fell to the 2nd round. There are plenty of players that were "character concerns," and didn't drop down that far. That may have played a small part in him falling, but in no way played a major part in Smith falling all the way to the 5th round.

All those players you mentioned all had considerable more 'NFL Potential' than Troy Smith does.

Any qb who gets 30 TDs and only 6 INTs has great skill at reading coverage regardless, he also had a 65% completion %. Which is a better ratio then Jamarcus russell had BTW. I dont understand how he could drop as low as the 2nd round, much less the 5th but im glad we got him for such a good deal. In his senior year he flat out-played Jamarcus even and his team went further, just dont understand it at all. Im not saying he'll be better then Jamarcus(which is possible) but combines arent everything, its what you do on the field that matters and Troy Smith proved himself very well on the field.
