While no coaching staff is perfect, I have to say the development of Layman, Collins, and the integration of guys like Curry and Kanter have been working well. Especially as of late.
Or maybe they just have an amazing floor general whose otherworldly play masks the deficiencies of his teammates?
Lillard, Leonard, Nurk, CJ, Baseball player and to a lesser extent Barton. The staff does an excellent job at getting players to perform at a high level.
Great thread...completely agree..we have a great coaching staff. If you've noticed even Kanter has played better defense the last couple of games...Ed Davis got better here...on and on. I'm really happy with the franchise these days
This. ^^^ I don't want a development coaching staff. I want a coaching staff that can get us to the next level and compete with a winning record in the playoffs. At this stage in his tenure here, Stotts gets nothing from me. He's not the coach who is going to get us to the next level, and it irks the fuck out of me when I hear Calabro drooling over his winning record during the broadcasts.
LOL, this is a lottery team without Dame. A monkey could literally coach a Lillard-led team to 40+ wins. Call me when Stotts figures out a way to end the 10-game playoff losing streak or learns how to make strategic in-game adjustments against a quality opponent. Until then it’s just the same old Stotts.
Olshey hired developmental assistant coaches, which I like. Stotts is average. In the Fire Stotts thread a few months ago in which everyone wanted Stotts gone, I posted that we should keep the assistants.
I would agree that our coaching staff is above average in the NBA. But there are areas, where I really really wish they would do better and it was illustrated again tonight by Rodney Hood: Players shooting themselves out of games. And risking to shoot the team out of the game ... CJ is generally the culprit. But Aminu and Moe do it too, to a lesser extend. If your 3 point shot is off (which is ok), get closer to the basket instead of jacking up more 3s from deeper and deeper. Hood took probably 5 very poor shots tonight ... while he could have come closer to the basket and post up some short dudes. Every time he had the ball, I knew he was going to take a poor shot ... and he did. ET took a very poor 3, then on the next possession, he was scoring in the post. That's what I want to see more from Hood. Either he is lights out or he is CJ mode ...
I think one or two should stay, yes....I especially like the guy who coached our SL team (was that Moran?). But guys like Jonathan Yim....I'm not sure he contributes much to the staff. Is he in practices on a daily basis? And what film coordination does he do with player development that other Assistants can't do? I see this guy getting interviewed by Brooke just after half-time, and he always looks lost to me.
Moot point. If NO ever musters up the balls to fire Stotts (or if the new owner fires both GM & coach), the new coach will undoubtedly bring in their own crew.
People used to say that about LeBron too. Guess either it's not true or Luke Walton is less intelligent than a monkey. If you've read my posts since long before the pelicans playoff series you NEVER would've made this comment towards me.
Not directed at you at all. I learn from many of the posters in this forum, including you. However, I feel strongly that a coaching change is necessary to get this team to the next level. Stotts has had seven years to mold this team, request players that fit his style and what does the team have to show for it? A playoff series win against a hobbled Clippers team? If Dame doesn’t hit that famous shot in 13/14, that likely is a game 7 loss in Houston. The team is 11-24 in the playoffs since Stotts took the helm — any way you slice it, that’s not good.
Stotts has no idea how to adjust to simple Pick n Roll Defense. I dont care about RS Record, i wanna see success in the Playoffs. Unfortunately without Nurkic that will be very difficult
Stotts underutilizes everyone on his roster not named Dame and CJ. The only function of the offense is to get those two looks. It’s why they struggle in the playoffs when teams zone in on what they do best. There’s no adjustment, because there’s never an adjustment. If Dame and CJ struggle, Stotts “adjustment” is to keep feeding them. The CJ injury has forced Stotts to trust other players, and they’re thriving. Curry has filled in for CJ and honestly I don’t really see much of a difference between the two. Not saying Curry is better because I do think CJ can be the focal point of an offense, but in Portland’s offense, I haven’t noticed a drop off at all. He’s also better defensively. With Nurk out, you’re actually seeing Collins get more looks in the post. His footwork has always been there, yet they barely utilized him down there offensively. Why he rarely played alongside Nurk is still beyond me. Layman is getting Vonleh’d (Speaking of underutilized!) which Terry has probably been dying to do from the minute he started having success. Where’s the off ball movement we saw earlier? He just stands in the corner now. Such a waste of an offensive talent. So what if he’s struggled with his shot? The easiest way to get him going would be to get him easy looks early in the game. But he’s being ignored. Harkless has always had an intriguing post game but like everyone else his role on offense has been to stand out on the perimeter or set a screen for Dame or CJ. Like Layman, he’s another guy who’s at his best when he’s involved early. Aminu has made real improvements to his offensive game, and deserves credit. His ballhandling is better. His off hand is better. His finishing is better. His free throws are better. Too bad Terry didn’t utilize any of it until he was forced to. I could go on but I’m so bored and he’s not going to get fired, so we’ll be back here next year having the same conversation.
