I have to get this out.
Not looking for assistance in fixing the issue as I know what I'd have to do.
    It's just a rant.

I'm not close with my parents at all. Neither of them were really a 'parent' during my childhood.
One has got better, while the other is MIA in a different state.
I'm fine with this and I've moved on for the most part because negative people are forever negative people.

This is MY mistake for trusting people.

My mother decided to make it easy on me because I'm always super busy and e-file my taxes for me this year.
I was over the phone with her at the time.
Apparently she checked the box 'allow someone to claim me as a dependent.'
Claiming me as a dependent gave her an additional 500$. While it murdered my return.

Let me be very clear, I pay for everything I have.
I have no bills, no debt(except to a grandparent due to an 8 year college degree that will be paid off with interest in 2 1/2 years) I'm very responsible with my money. My grandmother was an accountant for big law firms, over the summer she forced all 11 of her grandchildren starting at age 8 to learn how to manage money.
At the time I hated it, now I thank her for it. As I'm unlike my friends who have thousands of debt due to CC or student loans.
I buy my mother groceries and give her gas money if she needs it. She doesn't ask, I simply go to her house. Look in the kitchen and see how much she has. Then I go to the store and get groceries. Sometimes she goes with me, other times she doesn't.

If she needed or even WANTED 500$ I would've gave it to her without hesitation. Literally no questions asked.
But no she decided to be shady and screw me out of my return. Which would've been FAR FAR FAR FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR FUCKING MORE THAN 500$.
Who knows maybe she didn't know it would murder my return. But why the fuck would you even attempt it.

I'm livid right now for trusting people.
Haven't been this mad in a long, long time.
    Mad at myself.
    DTA especially family.

Pretty sure you can turn her in.

Edit - seriously though, I would contest it. Tell them she made a mistake.

I'm well aware of what I could do.
But at the end of the day if I did this it would still come out of my pocket. As I would be the one giving my mother money so she could refund the IRS a year from now.

Literally it's my fault for trusting people. I don't normally trust people with money. As money turns people evil.
I'm just mad at myself and ranting for breaking a personal rule.

    Wow.

She gave you the f’ing gift of life.

You are forever in her debt, a debt you will always owe, and you’re mad because she’s not wealthy like you.

    How old are you?

Your mother is obviously just scraping by and you are well-paid and debt free. why aren’t you building her an apartment in your backyard?

    WTF

    @SlyPokerDog
This guy is a cancer to this forum.
I don't care if he was joking/roleplaying nor do I care about the disclaimer in his profile.

You Sly know what I do, and know some things I've done as I dm'd you a couple weeks ago to thank you.
I swear to god this poster needs to go fuck himself. Maybe then he'll grow a brain.

Correct. HC, have you ever heard of an "amended return?" Grow up and pay a tax preparer to do it now, before the deadline for amended returns (used to be September, but I retired long ago), like you should have with the original return.

Since you dislike your mother so much, she's the last person you should have handling your taxes. Duh. If that obvious truth is rude, it's still the truth.

    1. How you got I dislike my mother AGAIN shows your lack of reading ability.
    2. Hilarious YOU told someone to grow up.
    3. An amended return is not what I'd have to do. So please before you attempt to give someone advice.... How is it you say it constantly and tell other posters to say the same thing to me? Shove it up your ass.
    4. Kick rocks.

These shitty meme posters coming @ me because they think I'm ungreatful or need to grow up.
Wonder why no one visits the OT section anymore & 90% of the board has them on ignore.

I'm allowed to rant, I don't need help fixing this if I choose to.
I said that in the first post.
This is the OT section and no one from my family visits this site.
Perfect place to dump my rant instead of saying it to someone in my family or my mother.
    Jesus christ.

Maybe the OP was trying to be funny and it sailed right over my head but, no, I read it again, and I can't help but be appalled at his open disrespect for the woman who created him. It's an example of the decline of our great country, that attitudes like this are applauded and joked about.

The whole idea of caring more about money than about my mother (who has apparently led a less-than-charmed life and is still struggling) is not a concept I can even partially grasp. Nor do I ever want to. That comes from a culture that is at odds with compassion.

The fact that I am being attacked for "rudeness" toward the OP is absurd. He's talking trash about his mother on the OT board, calling her a thief behind her back to strangers, and we're worrying about offending him? He's a big boy, I'm sure he can handle a few harsh words.

And over a relatively small amount of money of all things.

I pay $425 a year to my tax preparer. If I was ever stupid/lazy enough to have a relative or friend do them I'd pay them $425.

The OP ended up paying his Mom $500 to do his taxes wrong and learned a lesson, hopefully about himself.

Moms never stop teaching their children.

Every post you write is worthless and not worth the time it takes to respond. Let alone read.
I hope you're a better person irl, because if you're not. You're not worth the air to sustain you.

    Goofy.
    No it wasn't goofy.
    Not at all.

People are allowed to rant without having a troll come in and attempt character assassination.
There are a select few on this forum who know exactly what my 8yr degree is in, as well as what I do. You know what I ACTUALLY DO, not the three part time jobs I have on the side to give back.
I don't need to defend myself from the rest of you.

His post was not goofy at all. Both of his posts were offensive and my responses have been appropriate.

Well, that sucks man. Sorry to hear that. Sorry if Im reading it wrong. Just to clear confusion. So you were on the phone with her while she did your tax return. Did she ask if she could claim you? Or did she just decide all that without asking?

    Did it without asking.
I'm actually over the age limit as well as I pay for 100% of myself.
So technically this is not good at all.

Which is why I'm finding some of the responses here so funny.
Being that a couple of the posters are adherent followers of the law.
