Kansas beats West Virginia 88-74 to reach Big 12 finals

Dedric Lawson transferred to Kansas in part to win championships.

He'll have that chance Saturday night.

The former Memphis standout scored 24 points and the No. 17 Jayhawks, who failed to win a share of the Big 12 regular-season title for the first time in 15 years, roared into the conference tournament title game with an 88-74 victory over West Virginia on Friday night.

Shayok sends Iowa State past K-State in Big 12 semifinals

Marial Shayok had watched shot after shot hit everything but net Friday night, and Iowa State's leading scorer and veteran leader could very well have grown hesitant and frustrated.

Instead, he hit the two biggest shots of the game.

Shayok rattled in a tying 3-pointer down the stretch, swished another from right in front of his own bench, then added a couple of free throws in the closing seconds to help the fifth-seeded Cyclones beat No. 15 Kansas State 63-59 in the Big 12 semifinals.

Iowa State romps past KU to win Big 12 tourney

Lindell Wigginton found his way to Iowa State from Canada, Marial Shayok took a detour through the University of Virginia, and Michael Jacobson started his career at the University of Nebraska.

Three players from three very different backgrounds now have something in common: a title.

The trio helped the fifth-seeded Cyclones race to a big early lead against No. 17 Kansas on Saturday night, then contributed to enough crucial stops down the stretch, preserving a 78-66 victory over the Jayhawks in the Big 12 tournament finale at Sprint Center.

Lawson carries Kansas over Northeastern 87-53 in Midwest

Kansas, with all its ups and downs this season, was a popular pick to be one of the NCAA Tournament's first big upsets.

As higher seeds like Auburn and Michigan had tense moments in their openers, the Jayhawks soared into the next round.

Dedric Lawson had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Kansas dominated inside for an 87-54 rout over Northeastern Thursday in the Midwest Region

Baylor shoots past Syracuse 78-69 in NCAA's West Region

Baylor heard all week about Syracuse's vaunted zone, how long the Orange are, how difficult it is to find openings.

The Bears solved it by going over the top -- after getting it inside.

Creating open shots through the high post and kick-outs off drives, Baylor set a school NCAA Tournament record with 16 3-pointers to beat Syracuse 78-68 Thursday night in the West Region.

Culver scores 29, leads Texas Tech over Northern Kentucky

Texas Tech had won nine straight games, tied for the Big 12's regular-season championship and was flying high before a deflating loss in the conference tournament to lowly West Virginia.

The Red Raiders hadn't played in eight days, desperate to put the disappointment behind them.

    They finally did on Friday.

Jarrett Culver had 29 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, leading the No. 3 seed in the West Region to a 72-57 victory over Northern Kentucky in the first round of the nCAA Tournament.

Hot-shooting Oklahoma beats Ole Miss 95-72 in NCAAs

Nine days off, a few good practices and shootarounds, and suddenly Oklahoma looks like a new team.

The ninth-seeded Sooners used a balanced attack, with four players scoring at least 18 points, to beat Mississippi 95-72 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

D up: Texas Tech clamps down in 63-44 win over Michigan

More than 24 minutes into the game, the nation's best defense had yet to allow its 20th point.

Yes, Texas Tech makes it tough on people. One more clamp-down job like this and the Red Raiders will be D-ing up in the Final Four.

Jarett Culver's 22 points were a mere subplot in third-seeded Tech's 63-44 takedown of No. 2 Michigan in the West Region on Thursday night -- a victory that set up an intriguing Elite Eight showdown against Gonzaga, which boasts the country's leading offense.

Texas Tech locks down Zags to earn 1st Final Four trip

One player came all the way from Italy. Another arrived from rural Illinois after a stop in South Dakota. Still another could've gone a lot of places but chose to stay home and see if he could help Texas Tech make the big time.

It can't get much bigger than this.

Coach Chris Beard and his group of unheralded grinders notched a victory for everyone with a chip on their shoulder Saturday, gutting out a 75-69 win over Gonzaga that's sending the Red Raiders to the Final Four.

Mooney, Red Raiders D clamps down 61-51 over Michigan St

For those who thought Texas Tech only plays defense, it's time to meet Matt Mooney.

While the Red Raiders were locking down Michigan State on one end, the graduate transfer shooting guard was raining in 3s on the other, lifting Tech one win away from a title Saturday night with a 61-51 victory over the Spartans in the Final Four.

National runner-up Texas Tech opens with 85-60 victory

Another graduate transfer and some freshmen helped get No. 13 Texas Tech off to a solid start in the new season, seven months after the Red Raiders played in the national championship game.

Freshman Jahmi'us Ramsey scored 19 points and graduate transfer TJ Holyfield added 15 on 7-of-8 shooting as the much-changed Red Raiders beat Eastern Illinois 85-60 on Tuesday night.

Butler's 30 points lead No. 16 Baylor to 105-61 win over UCA

Jared Butler and Baylor's guard-oriented lineup quickly helped ease coach Scott Drew's usual nervousness about a season opener.

    There wouldn't be another upset.

Butler scored 30 points with a career-high eight 3-pointers, MaCio Teague had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his Baylor debut and the No. 16 Bears opened Drew's 17th season by scoring the first 19 points on the way to a 105-61 victory over Central Arkansas on Tuesday.

Longhorns use strong finish to pull upset at No. 23 Purdue

Texas' defense spent most of Saturday night harassing Purdue's scorers.

Eventually, all that work paid off.

The Longhorns forced three straight turnovers late in the game and took advantage of the miscues to score nine straight points, leaving town with a 70-66 upset over the No. 23 Boilermakers.

No. 13 Texas Tech breezes past Bethune-Cookman 79-44

Texas Tech coach Chris Beard figured the best opportunity for his new-look Red Raiders to get better was to work on passing in practice the past few days.

They showed some progress in their second game.

TJ Holyfield scored 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting while the No. 13 Red Raiders had 22 assists on 28 baskets in a 79-44 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night.

No. 11 Texas Tech rolls to 103-74 win over Houston Baptist

Texas Tech coach Chris Beard called a timeout after his No. 11 Red Raiders, playing at a neutral site about 120 miles from their campus, had three turnovers without getting off a shot and quickly fell behind to Houston Baptist.

"Just upset with our start. I didn't think we were being aggressive," Beard said, after initially joking that he asked his players where they wanted to eat after the game.

"I'm OK if you start the game and have some adversity. I'm OK if you start the game and the ball doesn't go in when you shoot," he said. "I didn't like our energy. I didn't like our execution of our early game plan."

The Red Raiders responded with 14 points in a row, going ahead to stay on the way to a 103-74 victory Wednesday night.

Moss leads No. 5 Kansas to 112-57 romp over Monmouth

Kansas was seconds away from another lopsided win in Allen Fieldhouse when Monmouth’s George Papas stole the ball from freshman Tristan Enaruna and ran the other way for a dunk, triggering a minor scuffle under the bucket.

It was the most fight the Hawks showed all night.

Isaiah Moss poured in 21 points to lead six Jayhawks in double-figure scoring, and No. 5 Kansas romped to a 112-57 victory over its undersized and outclassed MEAC opponent Friday night.

No. 24 Baylor rebounds with 72-63 win over Texas State

Baylor coach Scott Drew already expected a tough game against an experienced opponent that won 24 games last season. The Bears were also playing without their preseason All-Big 12 forward.

Jared Butler scored 15 points, Freddie Gillespie had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and three other players scored in double figures for No. 24 Baylor, who without Tristan Clark beat Texas State 72-63 on Friday night.

Azubuike leads No. 4 Kansas to 75-63 win over E Tennessee St

The buzzer had just sounded on another win for Kansas when coach Bill Self collared East Tennessee State guard Bo Hodges in front of his bench and whispered something in his ear.

Then he did the same to the Pirates' Tray Boyd III.

"He was just saying we're a good team. We fight to the end. We're tough to play," Boyd said, long after the fourth-ranked Jayhawks weathered a second-half charge for a 75-63 victory Tuesday night.
