Agreed. Harkless is a better player

I'm on board with the plan @GhostOfPGA mentioned in another thread for getting Jimmy Butler and Jrue Holiday.

    At the draft:
New Orleans gets ET, Harkless, Leonard and our 2019 1st
Portland gets Jrue Holiday and Solomon Hill

Portland buys a mid-late 2nd round pick to add a cheap minimum contract to the end of the bench

    In free agency:
Dame convinces Jimmy Butler to come here so we have to work out a sign-and-trade.
    Philly gets CJ McCollum
    Portland gets Jimmy Butler

This makes it very difficult to do anything else because we'd be at roughly $130 million (haven't done the actual math yet) with only 10 players but we'd be hard capped at around $139 million.

This is where the @BonesJones Taurean Prince trade comes into play. The point of this trade is to relieve salary, not necessarily to get Prince.
Atlanta gets Solomon Hill and Portland 2020 1st (Top-10 protected)
    Portland gets Taurean Prince

That trade saves us $9 million and would give us about $18 million in space between the hard cap and what we need to accomplish.

Where does that leave us? We'd still have 10 players under contract so we'd need to sign 4-5 guys.

    Starters
    Dame
    Jrue
    Butler
    Collins
    Nurk (eventually)

    Reserves
    Simons
    Trent
    Prince
    Skal
    2nd round pick

That starting lineup is a contender. The bench on the other hand would still need some major work. We'd have a couple of paths to go down from here. The Full-MLE would be opened up so the question becomes do we want one more really good player added to that with minimum contracts filling out the other spots, do we split it up into smaller pieces to offer two different players part of it, or do we still try to sign some combo of Hood/Kanter/Curry? We could probably find a way to use both the Full-MLE and the Bi-Annual Exception (about $3.5 million).

Hahaha as if Olshey would ever trade CJ. Dame would never recruit butler if it meant getting rid of him either.

I still think there’s a way to get butler though.

There isn't a realistic way to get Butler without CJ involved unless there is a 3rd team that wants our crap.

Would the 76ers want Holiday? We could do something similar with Jrue going to them instead of us.

Think this is more realistic. Jrue is a better fit in Philly than CJ anyway. And I kinda like CJ better next to Dame than Jrue. Jimmy would be an unbelievable addition. Think he needs to be our #1 target-- someway somehow. Blake a distant second.

Simons is not crap. Many thought he’d be a lottery pick this year, some even had him in the top 5. It’s not out of the realm possibility that a team likes him, especially a team like philly who could use a guy like him after whiffing on Fultz and in need of shooting.

We need to focus on the frontcourt. Bring Kanter back and you have a lot of big bodies to throw at other teams. Our biggest problem in the playoffs was keeping our opponents off the boards. That won't be a problem with a healthy Nurk and Kanter and Collins and Meyers and Skal.

I can't be bothered to take a deep dive about the new S&T rules right now. Can you forum cap experts give a brief synopsis on how we can S&T for Jimmy given the highly restrictive rules? Is there a BYC/PPP thing anymore? breif

All of these have to happen:

    1) Convince Butler to sign here

    2) Convince the 76ers that taking our crap or someone from another team that wants our crap is better than having cap space.

    3) Make other moves that allow us to stay under the tax apron while filling out the roster as we would get hard capped. Butler's salary will be $32.7 million, I think, without looking it up.

All of those have to happen. Each one is unlikely but there aren't really any other restrictions.

A team trying to win a title is NOT going to want to give up cap space for young players, picks, and a bunch of crappy expiring contracts no matter how much they value Simons. Keep in mind they have Zhaire Smith waiting too.

    That's why I said we need a 3rd team.

    Thanks.

I hope Neil finally gets someone creative enough to conjure up these steps. He doesn't usually seem to think a few moves ahead. Adding Jimmy to this core would be an unbelievable coup.

Jumping off what you mentioned, something like this would be cool. Add our pick going to NO. This would be after they trade away AD. A core of Zion/Zach/masssive haul they land for AD is a great core to start with.

You’re assuming they’re going to be contenders next year? Besides Butler, Tobias Harris and Redick are also free agents. So are some other rotational players like Mike Scott, Ennis (who’s already declined his option), Boban, and McConnell.

They could be a fringe playoff team real quick, especially if Butler decides to bounce, which to me is very likely.

I say Philly will keep Butler and Tobias and pay them well. No way they split those guys up. They will let Reddick go, who will probably sign with the Lakers for a year to give them some firepower?? Philly's bench is their problem.

If we could find a way to keep Kanter AND Hood that 2nd unit looks A LOT better.

This trade leaves out a huge problem. Butler is going to be making $32.7 million, not $20 million.
