"You are more important than the team."

Yes, that's a great message to send to players.

Agreed. I wish Dame would see that this doesn't help him get to the promised land, and that the extra money won't have any impact on the lifestyle he's able to live. These sorts of contracts are just horrible for teams.

One thing that I would like to see the league and Players' Association change in the the next CBA is not having the extra money of the supermax contracts count against team salary. If the purpose of the supermax is to help small market franchises retain their best players, there should be a recognition that big market teams are already at a major advantage in attracting free agents. Small market teams shouldn't be penalized further in their ability to have money available for free agents due to having to overpay for their stars.

225 million for Turner/Crabbe/Harkless/Leonard are horrible contracts for teams.

    This... isn't.

How much money do you suppose a guy like Lillard leaves on the table by not being in a major market city and being able to scoop up the other endorsement money available in those areas?

This absolutely has to be a change they put there and one that has been bandied about by the likes of Lowe/Beck/etc.

They can both be bad - and they both are bad.

(Actually, Harkless/Leonard aren't even bad on their own - it's only when combined, especially with Turner, that they are bad.)

Why? If a guy like Tom Brady can leave money on the table to help his team build a better roster, why do we hold NBA players to a different standard?

Lol if you want to see how quickly this team can go South, don’t pay Dame.

I criticize sometimes but I’m no fool. He’s a fantastic player, face of an ownerless franchise and he’s ours.

Pay him and keep him a Blazer his entire careeer

Perhaps this is the millennial in me, but I want every last penny I'm owed. It's not my job to work around the cap to build a contender. That's how this pseudo free market with the cap should work.

If the front office makes good decisions, it can most definitely build a championship roster around a Dame making 45 mil/yr. This isn't really cost prohibitive-- it just makes Neil's job that much more important.

And otoh, you can fuck around and not offer this to him, good luck ever landing a player of his caliber again.

I wont fault him if he takes it, But I wont be happy. If he truly wants to win, he will take less to improve his supporting cast.

I'm pretty nervous about this really. I think this is what could put a stamp on us never going anywhere if he accepts it.

I don't know why this is even a thought. It isn't true in any other profession.

So go the 'Tom Brady' route and get paid more through endorsements because the team has more money to put better players around you because you took less against the cap.

    Correct? Seems bigger picture oriented.

Can you gives some examples? Please don't say Brady, because he cashed in for a long time like everyone else. ... until he married a wealthier woman than him.

You sure about that? Tom Brady begs to differ. Tim Duncan Begs to Differ.

Exactly. I think Dame is a big picture guy.
