It makes sense given the success of the team this year. While Stotts definitely has deficiencies I think we'll be fine next season.
Kanter, Hood, Curry, and (my opinion only) Aminu are goners - with no way to replace them. How do you lose that much depth and get better? If Nurk misses any amount of time or struggles upon his return, we're boned.
Really? May I refer to @OneSport3 giving Kerr, Bud, Stevens, etc as other 'no obviously better coach available' candidates....who obviously were. Same memory that forgot Curry could shoot and designed a defense to let him have continuous wide-open '3's in Game 1. This. Of course they like him because he has enabled them to be who they are without demanding more. (CJ....this means you to start with) See above. For those with a short memory, Stevens was in the Conference Finals just last year. And if you call what Stotts did in this years Finals, 'coaching', that would seem to be a fairly loose interpretation of the word. Well, at least in terms of good coaching. This! Blazers benefited greatly from the side of the bracket they were on. Stotts wanted #4. Simons thankfully messed that up or we would have faced the Warriors in the semis. If we get swept in the semis instead of the WCF's, how is everyone feeling about this? Again, really? Clippers beat Warriors twice....in Oakland. Rockets beat the Warriors twice. Portland has beaten them once.....in the last 4 years in the Playoffs. Not sure how we are a Top 4 team by those metrics. We are by distance covered in the bracket but that takes us back to thanking Anfernee.
I'll admit that I was losing my mind last night and yelling for Stotts' head for leaving Evan Turner in the game at crunch time. I still don't know what he was thinking, but I can just imagine how the Blazers would look around the league for firing Stotts: GM No. 1: "The Blazers fired Terry after getting to the WCF? What the...? Nobody expected them to be in contention for anything beyond maybe 8th seed in the West." GM No. 2: "Yeah, but a bunch of guys on a Blazers' forum thought he was the reason that they didn't beat the freakin' Golden State Warriors so Olshey caved and fired his ass." GM No. 1: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What a clown show in RIP City. Good luck getting a good coach to join that mess."
Plus, don't discount just how much pull Dame has on this decision. He does count Terry as an important part of the culture and growth of the team that he always refers to when stating he like to be a Blazers for the long haul. Check out that father son embrace they had after the Denver series.
Wait now. Some things are not accurate here, or missed. For one, you are saying better coaches WERE available. Those coaches are NOT available now though. Cant change history. Who is an obvious better choice at this moment that is available? Also, you keep bringing up the clippers winning twice as an indication of them being better than us, but that isn't the end all. I didn't watch the games, so I don't know if i'm accurate or not, but there could always be that they were just floating at that time, because they didn't take the clips seriously, and thus lost focus and motivation. But coming up against the team that people have mentioned could dethrone them, they optimized their potential and focus against us? Sometimes wins and losses are not the only factor in judging whether a team is better or not. Many factors come into play. Did you watch the clips and warriors? Maybe I am wrong? If you didn't, then this is a possibility, no?
Stotts gets no credit when our mediocre players finish second in the Western Conference. Stotts gets all of the blame when our superstar unbeatable players get beat by the best team ever assembled. I'm somewhere in the middle.
I watched the clips / warriors and warriors/blazers. GS honestly slept walked quite a bit through both series' and they just kind of knew they could win. I never questioned the clips effort in that series' I did question Portlands at times, jogging back, not picking up the ball in transition, effort...
Terry is a very good coach and like everyone else - he is not perfect - but honestly, anyone that thinks it would be simple to find someone as good as him is fooling themselves, sure it can happen - but it is just as likely that a replacement will not be anywhere as good. The players are happy, the team made it to the WCF without their 2nd best or 2nd most important player and lost to one of the greatest teams in the history of the team while being the 2nd youngest team in the playoffs after the Nuggets. Good on the Blazers.
He coached in the last conference finals when he didn't have to worry about his "leader" fucking shit up.
I can respect that opinion, kind of disagree, but I understand what you're saying, and you may be right.
An extension means after you fire the coach, you're paying that coach to either vacation, or coach another team.
That's fair. Just an opinion and I do not fool myself to think that I am always right - but I honestly think he is a very good coach and I believe the results speak for themselves.
I'm thinking we end up with two of the four you mentioned, maybe. After last season was over many didn't think we'd make the playoffs.
Yeah, I sure hope they could afford that.....the amount of Stotts contract is less than the guys at the end of the rotation. I think we could overcome.
I disagree with that. I think they will lose one of Hood/Kanter and lose Curry. And they might let Aminu walk. And Nurkic will likely miss half of the season and take till the next season to be back to where he was. Hard to see them not taking a step back next year
